Bornea lifted the title with a split decision over compatriot and fellow unbeaten prospect Michael Enriquez, after a very competitive fight where each round was closely contested and could be given to either boxer.
Bornea started best, boxing from the outside and using his speed and footwork to unsettle Enriques.
In round three Enriquez (22) managed to turn the tide when he caught Bornea with a big left hook that buckled the youngster’s knees, and from that point it looked as if things would go his way.
However, after three rounds where Bornea appeared to be a fading man, and Enriquez was constantly putting on the pressure, Bornea got his second win in round six and again managed to get his tactics working and score effectively with the jab.
After ten wonderful rounds of action, where an enthusiastic crowd at the packed venue got more than their money’s worth, judge Rome Fordaliza and Alberto Brembot Dulalas scored the fight 97-93 and 99-91 for Bornea, while Alberto Heramil had it 98-92 for Enriquez. Referee was Ramuel Ovalo.
With the victory, and his professional careers first title, Jake Bornea improved his record to 5-0 (3), while Michael Enriquez must come to terms with his first loss and drops to 7-1-1 (4). The fight was promoted by Sanman Promotions in cooperation with JM Promotions.
