Lopez suffered a small cut over his left eye midway into the fight due to an accidental headbutt, something which did not affect the fight.
Romero was rocked a couple of times midway and late in the fight but came back firing and getting back into the fray. Romero, who was warned on several occasions throughout the bout for rabbit punching and kidney shots, finally lost a point in the final round, though it did not change the outcome as the fight went to the cards.
Scorecards were 116-111 and 115-112 for Romero and 115-112 for Lopez.
In other results, skilled bantamweight Alejandro “Cobrita” Gonzalez Jr., 16-0-2 (11) (the son of the former WBC featherweight champion of the same name), impressed as he landed two left hooks, putting the first “0” on the ledger of Hanzel “Tornadito” Martinez, 19-1 (15), in the second round of a youth alphabet title bout.
2008 Olympian middleweight Matt Korobov, 19-0 (11), went through the motions through the early rounds against Arturo “El Caballo” Rodriguez, 12-13 (8), before stepping on the gas and taking out his opponent in the fifth round of a scheduled 10.
Venezuelan middleweight Jose “Bolivita” Uzcategui, 17-0 (13), defeated a very tough, game (but seemingly too mechanical) Rogelio “Porky” Medina, 30-3 (24), via unanimous decision at the end of 10 via scores of 96-93 and 97-92 (twice).
