Ask Gerry Cooney- Nov. 30, 2012

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every Thursday morning.
Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the SiriusXM radio show, “Friday Night at The Fights,” a show that Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, the former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

The show airs every Friday on Sirius channel 92 and XM channel 208 from 6 – 8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.
Please submit your questions to
Our first question comes from Anthony S., who asks:
Gerry, I read that Ricky Hatton has retired following his loss to Vyacheslav Senchenko. I actually thought that he was doing rather well until he was stopped by a liver shot. That punch has stopped a lot of great fighters also, so do you think Hatton is making the right decision?
Our next question comes from Warren M., who asks:
Hi Gerry, like many others, I was a little surprised at the way Robert Guerrero beat up Andre Berto on Saturday night. I’ve been reading a lot of posts complaining about the referee [Dr. Lou Moret]. I agree Guerrero made it a trench war but I thought Berto did his share of holding and roughing it up on the inside as well. Do you agree?
Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show:
Our first question came from Warren M., who asked:
Gerry, as we’ve all heard, Hector “Macho Man” Camacho has been shot in Puerto Rico. Some reports initially said he had passed and others said he survived but might be paralyzed. The latest said he suffered from cardiac arrest and was brain dead. Do you have any inside info as to what’s happening?
Gerry explained that he and Hector were very close but he didn’t know anymore than we had heard at the time. Sadly, we all soon learned the sad truth that the “Macho Man” had passed away.
Our next question came from Russell T., who asked:
Gerry, I seem to remember that the referee used to also have a scorecard in boxing. Why did that practice stop and do you think it should be brought back since the ref is the closest to the action?
Both Gerry and Randy both agreed that the referee should definitely have a say in scoring a fight.
