Ask Gerry Cooney – Nov. 2, 2013

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every Thursday morning (or in this case, Saturday morning).

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” a show Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.
The show airs every Friday on Sirius channel 92 and XM channel 208 from 6 – 8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.
Please submit your questions to:
Our first question comes from Kenny D., who asks:
Gerry, I recently watched “Legendary Nights: Gatti/Ward” and I was wondering. Guys like yourself and Larry Holmes have become good friends, same with Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns and obviously Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward.  What is it that makes two guys who literally beat the hell out of each other become good friends afterwards?
Our next question comes from Jerry Grzezak, who asks:

Gerry, first off I would like to say thank you for some great boxing memories. I attended the fight at Caesars Palace in 1982 in which you fought Larry Holmes for the heavyweight title and although it wasn’t your night, your fans could certainly hold their heads up based on your valiant effort. My question is regarding the heavyweight division. The Klitschko brothers have dominated that division for quite some time. Who do you think will be the next heavyweight to step up and hold the title for any length  of time?

Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show:
Our first question came from Bernie Campbell, who asked:
Armenia is a poor, relatively unknown spot on the map and yet it has produced three great champions in the last few years, Vic Darchinyan, Arthur Abraham, and Vanes Martirosyan! Gerry, why do you think Armenian fighters are so good?
Gerry wasn’t really sure why that is although he did point out many good fighters are coming from that part of the world – but perhaps it has something to do with what they’re eating or maybe there’s even something in the water?
Our next question came from Bobby L., who asked:
Gerry, what do you think really happened that caused the Shane Mosley-Anthony Mundine fight to be canceled?
Gerry felt it was a matter of money, plain and simple.
