Ask Gerry Cooney – May 31, 2013

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every Thursday morning (or Friday morning, in this case!).

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” a show Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.
The show airs every Friday on Sirius channel 92 and XM channel 208 from 6 – 8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.
Please submit your questions to:
Our first question comes from Rocco T., who asks:
Gerry, in your era, championship fights went 15 rounds, where today, they go 12. Do you think those extra three rounds could result in different outcomes in certain fights?
Our next question comes from Tony G., who asks:
Gerry, some people are talking about Carl Froch fighting Bernard Hopkins. Do you see that fight happening and who do you think would win?
Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show.
Or first question came from John F., who asked:
Gerry, Andre Ward refused to become a “Champion Emeritus,” whatever the hell that means, and gave back the belt [to the WBC]. Any chance that fighters will start to rebel against the corruption of the sanctioning bodies?
Gerry feels the sanctioning bodies have watered down the championships so much that they are for the most part meaningless and that the elite fighters carry the sport.
Our next question came from Bernie Campbell, who asked:
Gerry, I think that Mikkel Kessler and Carl Froch are pretty evenly matched! How much do you think home field advantage helps Froch, considering that Kessler’s mom is also from England and Mikkel is a very popular fighter in Great Britain?
Gerry felt the hometown crowd would be firmly behind Froch and that it would be an excellent fight, which it was.
