Ask Gerry Cooney – May 24, 2013

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at Maxboxing.com every Thursday morning (or Friday morning, in this case!).

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” a show Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

The show airs every Friday on Sirius channel 92 and XM channel 208 from 6 – 8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Please submit your questions to: askgerrycooney@aol.com.

Or first question comes from John F., who asks:

Gerry, Andre Ward refused to become a “Champion Emeritus,” whatever the hell that means, and gave back the belt [to the WBC]. Any chance that fighters will start to rebel against the corruption of the sanctioning bodies?

Or next question comes from Bernie Campbell, who asks:

Gerry, I think that [Mikkel] Kessler and [Carl] Froch are pretty evenly matched! How much do you think home field advantage helps Froch, considering that Kessler’s mom is also from England and Mikkel is a very popular fighter in Great Britain?

Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show.

Our first question came from Paul J., who asked:

Gerry, it looks like Miguel Cotto will be fighting Saul Alvarez. Whereas Austin Trout beat Cotto and Alvarez beat Trout, does it stand to reason that Alvarez will beat Cotto?

Gerry reminded us that styles make fights so that theory does not really hold true.

Our next question came from Kenny D., who asked:

A friend and I were debating what a fighter would need to do to beat Floyd Mayweather. My friend says someone would have to stay on his chest and pound the body to break him down and then go upstairs. Do you agree with that assessment?

Gerry agrees with the assessment that you have to break Mayweather down to beat him. By the same token, Gerry also points out Mayweather is a defensive genius and that the aforementioned is a lot easier said than done.
