Ask Gerry Cooney – May 17, 2013

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at Maxboxing.com every Thursday morning.

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” which Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

The show airs every Friday on Sirius channel 92 and XM channel 208 from 6 – 8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Please submit your questions to: askgerrycooney@aol.com.

Our first question comes from Paul J., who asks:

Gerry, it looks like Miguel Cotto will be fighting Saul Alvarez. Whereas Austin Trout beat Cotto and Alvarez beat Trout, does it stand to reason that Alvarez will beat Cotto?

Our next question comes from Kenny D., who asks:

A friend and I were debating what a fighter would need to do to beat Floyd Mayweather. My friend says someone would have to stay on his chest and pound the body to break him down and then go upstairs. Do you agree with that assessment?

Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show.

Our first question came from Billy T., who asked:

Gerry, it looks like Manny Pacquiao is going to fight Brandon Rios. Do you see Rios as a viable challenge to the “Pac-Man”?

Gerry feels Rios does present a strong challenge to Pacquiao and that Pacquiao may be a little gun shy after the vicious KO Marquez laid on him in their fourth fight last December. Gerry thinks it will be a very exciting fight.

Our next question came from Kevin M., who asked:

Gerry, Floyd Mayweather takes a lot of knocks for not fighting tough fights but as I recall, everybody thought Ricky Hatton would be the one that would beat him and he failed. Then Shane Mosley, who did have him hurt but couldn’t finish him, failed. And there have been other fighters as well on his résumé that were tough. It’s almost like if he doesn’t lose, certain people get annoyed. Why is that?

Gerry pointed out that when you are at the top of the game, people naturally take pot shots at you. He also felt many fans blame Mayweather because a showdown between him and Pacquiao didn’t happen and that has affected how some fans see him.
