Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at Maxboxing.com every Thursday (or in today’s case, Friday) morning.
Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” a show Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.
The show airs every Friday on Sirius channel 92 and XM channel 208 from 6 – 8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.
Our first question comes from Lou M., who asks:
Gerry, I am having a heated discussion with some friends regarding the upcoming Saul Alvarez-Floyd Mayweather fight on September 14th. I truly believe that Alvarez has the power to take Mayweather out and they feel that Mayweather is too good a defensive fighter to get caught. Do you think Alvarez has a chance of getting to Mayweather with a big shot or is he too slow like my friends said?
Our next question comes from Henry G., who asks:
Gerry, last week on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights” show, Mike Tyson made a very public apology to Teddy Atlas. During an interview with Brian Kenny and in a post-fight interview, Tyson explained that he was righting a wrong that he was responsible for. He then broke down and said he’s been lying to everyone about his sobriety and that he was in fact clean and sober for only six days, something he called a miracle. I’ve heard you speak about your own sobriety and I wonder, can you shed some light on the battles that Tyson will face as he struggles to make it?
And Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show:
Our first question came from Angelo Pessolano, who asked:
Gerry, you possessed one of the hardest punches in heavyweight history. Among many others, Larry Holmes and George Foreman both attest to that. My question is, when throwing the left hook, should your body weight end up on the right leg while the punch lands?
Gerry explained that when throwing the left hook, 80% of your weight should be on the left foot but as it lands, the weight should be shifted to where 80% is on the right foot, setting up the right hand.
Our next question comes from Ken Hissner (Of DoghouseBoxing), who asks:
Gerry, at SteelStacks’ last show, Mike Mittman introduced Larry Holmes as “the man who held the title longer and with the most defenses in the heavyweight division.” Any novice boxing historian knows Joe Louis held the title for 14 years and defended it successfully 25 times. Holmes only held it for seven years and had 20 successful defenses. Even Wladimir Klitschko has held the title longer than Holmes did. I was offended by that and I saw you sitting ringside with Larry that night. Were you offended as well?
Gerry stated that he was not offended and considers all of the fighters mentioned great in their own right.
