Ask Gerry Cooney - Mar. 28, 2013

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at every Thursday morning.

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show, “Friday Night at The Fights,” a show that Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, the former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.
The show airs every Friday on Sirius channel 92 and XM channel 208 from 6 – 8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.
Please submit your questions to:
Our first question comes from Al G., who asks:
Gerry, hypothetically, if Saul Alvarez were to fight Floyd Mayweather, I see it as Mayweather’s boxing skills against Alvarez’s brute force and strength. So in that situation, which style wins?
Our next question comes from Tommy V., who asks:
Gerry, Adrien Broner is set to face Paulie Malignaggi. Although Malignaggi has great boxing skill, he doesn’t seem to have much behind his punches, where Broner does. So if Broner begins to walk through Malignaggi’s punches, what would Paulie need to do to win?
Gerry answered the following questions on last week’s show.
Our first question came from Tommy T., who asked:
Gerry, shocking news this week from HBO as they have severed all ties with Golden Boy. How do you think this affects boxing and if Golden Boy joins Floyd Mayweather and jumps to Showtime, wouldn’t that make Showtime THE network for top fights, leaving HBO in the dust?
Gerry does not feel that Showtime is big enough to go up against HBO but he also agreed with Randy who stated that if CBS gets behind Showtime, then HBO could have a big problem.
Our next question came from Rick M., who asked:
Do you think Adrien Broner is as good as he apparently thinks he is or does he look that good because he fights guys smaller or less talented than him?
Gerry feels that Broner shows great promise but that he is yet to be truly tested.
