Artem Dalakian Retains WBA Flyweight Crown In Kiev

By Dmytro Mossienko at ringside: Ukraine’s hard punching Artem Dalakian (16-11-0) from southern city of Dnepr stopped top ranked contender Sirichai Thaiyen (50-35KO-3) from Thailand in round eight of their championship fight on the ring in Parkovy Conventional Centre in uptown Kiev on Sunday.

As the contender promised at the weigh-in to make all necessary to leave Ukraine with the precious belt, Dalakian started the fight at charging pace from the opening bell. His style of rapidly changing the angles and loading flurries of punches impressed the public and somewhat puzzled the Thai opponent.

Dalakian’s crisp jabs and hooks along with body shots seemed to somewhat shocked his opponent. Yet, in round two Sirichian showed good movement and high discipline. He also tried to pay back in exchanges at close quarters, yet Dalakian’s foot work and speed frustrated the contender once and again.

Dalakian dropped his opponent in round five, then again in rounds 6 and 8 with the fight stopped 4 seconds before the end of the round, when the judged ruched in to save drained and virtually defenseless Thaiyen!

the boxing card was staged by the Union Boxing Promotion.

In a meaningful co-main event of the evening the hard punching Igor Mahurin (9-4KO-1draw) won the IBA Intercontinental Super featherweight title in a close and exciting fight against slick Italian mover Daniele Limone. The Italian came to fight with a clever and flexible game plan, and a number of times confused the local puncher by changing the angles, sensing the distance very well and catching Mahurin a number of times with unexpected and crisp jabs and body shots. Well tuned to his corner with mature tutor Dino Orso as the key strategist, Limone fought a disciplined and very competitive fight. As it naturally happens in the championship fights, Limone was caught several times with decent blows of the local master, yet, the Italian’s tactics and productivity impressed the local public. Sometimes Limone would appear even too mean and looking like intentionally headbutting Mahurin, yet, the referee would not deduct any points. All this was not enough though to impress the judges, who thoroughly followed the pace of the fight, and Mahurin was awarded a Unanimous Decision.
