Ask Gerry Cooney – November 27th, 2014

Compiled by Allan Scotto

Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at Maxboxing.com every week.

Each week, Gerry will answer as many of your questions as he can on the Sirius XM radio show “Friday Night at The Fights,” which Gerry co-hosts with Randy “The Commish” Gordon, former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

The show airs every Friday on Sirius Sport Zone Channel 92 from 6-8 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Please submit your questions to: askgerrycooney@aol.com

Our first question comes from Russ M. who asks:

Gerry, many people were upset that Algieri was given a shot at Pacqiaou, but I actually think it was good for boxing. I’m an older guy who hasn’t watched boxing in a while, but Algieri captured my imagination and I bought the fight. And even though he lost decidedly, I think Chris is great for the sport. What do you think?

Our next question comes from Eddie P. who asks:

Hi Gerry, well the debate about who beats who in a match between Pacqiaou and Mayweather is now fully reignited. Based on the Pacqiaou we saw last Saturday, in your opinion, does he take Floyd?

And Gerry answered the following questions last week:

Our first question came from Tom G. who asked:

Gerry, I read that the actor Mickey Rourke, at 62 years of age, is fighting in Russia. Do you think a man of that age should be allowed to fight in a professional boxing match?

Gerry does not think it’s wise to put a 62 year old man with limited skills in a boxing ring and he is concerned that Rourke could be seriously injured.

Our next question came from Vinny L. who asked:

Gerry, I’ve been reading a lot of things that Freddie Roach has been saying about the upcoming fight between Chris Algieri and Manny Pacqiaou. Roach is highly touted as a trainer. Do you think he’s that good or do you think he just has a couple of really good fighters that make him look better than he is?

Gerry thinks that Roach is an excellent trainer and points out that Roach has trained Champions and has helped them to improve along the way.
