Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

MaxBoxing's 2014 Fight of the Year: Matthysse vs. Molina Jr.

By John J. Raspanti: There were a number of outstanding fights in 2014. Last August, strawweights Francisco Rodriguez Jr. and Katsunari Takayama battled for 12 rounds at the famed Arena Monterey in Monterrey, MX. Takayama had the edge in the first half of the fight. Rodriguez dug deep and battled on, eventually overtaking Takayama in the last few rounds. The give and take nature of the bout left the crowd salivating for more. MaxBoxing's Fighter of the Year for 2014 is…

By John J. Raspanti: There were a lot of great candidates for MaxBoxing’s Fighter of the Year. Such as... Terence Crawford (25-0, 17 KOs) had a phenomenal 2014. In March, Crawford, of Omaha, Neb., traveled to Glasgow, Scotland to defeat hometown hero Ricky Burns. He returned to Omaha three months later and stopped talented Yuriorkis Gamboa in the ninth round of a thrilling bout. Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) rolled through 2014 by… MaxBoxing's Fighter of the Year for 2014 is…

Crawford retains WBO title with victory over Beltran

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Terence Crawford now has bigger fish to fry. The defending WBO champion showcased his variety of skills with a dominant victory over tough Ray Beltran at a sold-out CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska Saturday night. Crawford, a native of Omaha, gave his fans plenty to cheer about as he cruised to unanimous decision by scores of 119-109 (twice) and 120-108. Maxboxing and Doghouseboxing scored the match 118-110 for Crawford... Crawford retains WBO title with victory over Beltran

On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings Nov-11-14

By Derek Bonnett: Bernard Hopkins lost and he lost badly. However, losing badly two months shy of fifty years of age is still pretty good. Especially when the lopsided unanimous decision scores came against, the new SecondsOut number one rated light heavyweight in the world, Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev, who is not exactly used to hearing the judges final tallies in his fights. I expected Kovalev to finish Bernard to the body, but the end result confirmed two things. I was right about the victor On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings Nov-11-14

Crawford comes back to stop Gamboa in round nine

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): In boxing, one punch can change everything. For four rounds on Saturday night at the Century Link Arena in Omaha, Neb., 2004 Olympic gold medalist Yuriorkis Gamboa boxed beautifully. Defending WBO lightweight champion, and hometown hero, Terrence Crawford, was having difficulties competing with Gamboa. Taller by close to four inches, and with a reach advantage of five, Crawford was being beat to the punch on a consistent basis... Crawford comes back to stop Gamboa in round nine

Omaha! Omaha!

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Ask and you shall receive. As I exit Maxboxing, I’ve been asked about doing one last fight diary/timeline article on my journeys covering the traveling road show that is the game of boxing. And this past weekend took me to Omaha, Nebraska, which is in the heartland of America and now best known for being one of the audible signals for Peyton Manning. Terence Crawford was making the first defense of his WBO lightweight... Omaha! Omaha!

Crawford Takes Out Gamboa In The Ninth

(Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Terence "Bud" Crawford won the battle of the unbeaten fighters Saturday night when he stopped Cuban boxer Yuriorkis Gamboa in the ninth round to retain his WBO lightweight title at the Century Link Center in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. Crawford staggered Gamboa with a left hand before knocking him down with the same hand early in the ninth round. The end came after 2,53 when Crawford detonated a huge right hand prompting referee... Gamboa Has Tough Task in WBO Lightweight Champ Crawford

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Tonight, live on HBO from Omaha, Nebraska, local favorite Terence Crawford, 23-0 (16), will defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightweight title against Yuriorkis Gamboa, also 23-0 (16). Crawford is a gutsy, tough scrapper who walked into former champion Ricky Burns’ backyard in Scotland in March and took his title. The New Bismarck?

By Steve Kim: My personal bucket list has always included covering a fight in the state of Nebraska. OK, not really, but believe it or not, I am looking forward to my trip to the “Cornhusker State” this weekend as Terence Crawford defends his WBO lightweight crown against Yuriorkis Gamboa at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. I have never been to Nebraska; in fact, until a couple of months ago, neither had the promoter of this event, Top Rank Promotions’ Bob Arum, who has promoted bouts across The New Bismarck?

Next Man Up

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): As the calendar turned to 2014 and Mikey Garcia was looking ahead to his fight versus Juan Carlos Burgos, the dominant storyline was that the talented Garcia was on the fast-track to eventually face Manny Pacquiao. Never mind Garcia was campaigning at 130 pounds and that the “Pac-Man” is a welterweight (who albeit, can probably easily move down to 140 pounds) but this would be the plan for Garcia. Keep him active as possible this year... Next Man Up

Golovkin Moves on Without Chavez Jr.

By Steve Kim: On Saturday afternoon in a small conference room at the LAX Marriott, WBA middleweight beltholder Gennady Golovkin held a media roundtable with a select handful of boxing scribes. If it were up to him, he’d be talking about his upcoming summer showdown against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. But alas, Chavez seemed more intent on battling his promoter, Top Rank Promotions than facing “GGG.”... To Extend or not to Extend?

By Steve Kim: Early this week, Top Rank Promotions President Todd duBoef was summoned out of the bullpen to try and salvage the proposed bout between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Gennady Golovkin, tentatively taking place on July 19th at the Forum in Los Angeles. It was a fight boxing fans were salivating over and everyone involved in the negotiations believed this was a deal that would eventually get done... To Extend or not to Extend?

Arreola Gives Himself a Fighting Chance

By Steve Kim (Photo © Goossen Tutor Promotions/Brittini Moten): This Saturday night from the hoops home of the USC Trojans, Chris Arreola gets another crack at Bermane Stiverne (ESPN, 8 p.m., ET) at the Galen Center for the vacant WBC heavyweight title. Last year, they met at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, located about an hour away in Ontario. Stiverne broke Arreola’s nose, knocked him down and bloodied him over 12 rounds. De la Hoya’s Here

By Steve Kim: Yesterday, on a cool Southern California afternoon on Olvera Street, the press tour for the July 12th bout between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Erislandy Lara, promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, kicked off. But most interesting was that the master of ceremonies for this media gathering was the “Golden Boy” himself. For years, while Oscar De la Hoya’s silhouette served as the logo of the company, Richard Schaefer was its day-to-day leader and main decision... De la Hoya’s Here

Showtime Showcases

By Steve Kim: HBO hasn’t had a very good year when it comes to its boxing programming. This was highlighted on March 29th when the network broadcast a main event that featured Sergey Kovalev defending his WBO light heavyweight belt against the unknown Cedric Agnew, who was listed by bookmakers (who are the real experts most of the time) as high as a 38-1 underdog. To add insult to injury, it was announced earlier that week that Adonis Stevenson would be jumping ship to rival Showtime and Showtime Showcases

Mikey Garcia vs. Top Rank

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): It turns out that the big fight for WBO super featherweight titlist Mikey Garcia in 2014 will not be against Yuriorkis Gamboa but against his own promoter, Top Rank Promotions, who he recently filed suit against in a story broken by BadCulture.net. You could see this coming a mile (or least a month ago) away when Garcia accompanied his brother/trainer Robert Garcia to Las Vegas for the Saul Alvarez-Alfredo Angulo fight, which was promoted... A Prelude to Nothing?

By Steve Kim: HBO has one live card scheduled between March 8th and May 17th and it takes place this upcoming weekend in Atlantic City, New Jersey when WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev faces challenger Cedric Agnew with a co-feature that has junior welterweights Thomas Dulorme vs. Karim Mayfield from the Ballroom at Boardwalk Hall. Yeah, I can hear your groans. Right now, your HBO subscription is much more about “True Detective” and “Vice” than boxing... A Prelude to Nothing?

Garcia vs. TBA on HBO

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): After his victory over Juan Carlos Burgos on January 25th at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City, talk turned immediately of having Mikey Garcia face the undefeated Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa. The first proposed date was May 17th then was pushed back to June 21st. Unfortunately, this fight will not take place because of, well, what else? Money. “It broke down over money. Yeah, everything breaks down over money,” Top Rank Promotions... Garcia vs. TBA on HBO

Ponce de Leon Looks to Even the Score

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): “I lost. That’s all,” is what Daniel Ponce de Leon says when you ask him about his initial match-up versus Juan Manuel Lopez in June of 2008 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. On that night, Ponce de Leon lost his WBO junior featherweight title as he was sent to the canvas twice and halted in the first round by the Puerto Rican. Perhaps he doesn’t want to recall too much of what happened that night or perhaps simply can’t. But as Ponce de Leon Looks to Even the Score

Heavyweight rivals Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury came through their respective bouts at the Copperbox Arena in London on Saturday night to set up a summer showdown WBO title eliminator. Magdaleno in Hawaiian Gardens

By Steve Kim (Photo © Al Applerose, Top Rank): At 17-0 (13), Jesse Magdaleno is one of the sport’s better young prospects. An exciting blend of speed and power, this southpaw gets back into action tonight at the C. Robert Lee Center in Hawaiian Gardens, California. 2014 could be the time in which he takes the next step in becoming a ranked contender in the junior featherweight division. “I think this year is my year and I gotta continue what I’m doing but other than that, I got a strong Magdaleno in Hawaiian Gardens

Rios on Pacquiao, DMAA, Ariza, Heredia and More: Part One

By Gabriel Montoya: There are few fighters in boxing more candid than former lightweight champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios, 31-2-1 (23). A few months removed from his 12-round unanimous decision loss to Manny Pacquiao, 55-5-2 (38), in November, Rios joined www.leaveitintheringradio.com last Thursday for a candid discussion about the loss, his positive post-fight drug test through the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) and his relationship with strength-and-conditioning coaches Angel “Memo” H Rios on Pacquiao, DMAA, Ariza, Heredia and More: Part One

Is It 2013 All over Again for GGG?

By Steve Kim (Image created by © Chee, MaxBoxing): All across the globe, boxing fans will be able to see Gennady Golovkin’s latest defense of his WBA middleweight title versus Osumanu Adama. Well, that is except in the good ol’ U.S. of A. Business Before Pugilism

By Steve Kim: 2014 is off to a rather slow start in boxing (basically taking the next month off as HBO and Showtime go dark in February for whatever reason) but starting in early March, it does pick up steam and builds great momentum toward the summer months. The schedule actually looks pretty enticing should it come to fruition. But first and foremost, boxing is a business (news flash, right?) and before any fights happen, deals have to be struck. Oftentimes, these negotiations are more Business Before Pugilism

2014 Boxing Resolutions

By Steve Kim: It never fails; does it? The first month or so into the New Year, you see people you’ve never seen working out at the gym. They are the ones who make New Year’s resolutions to start working out and get back into shape and as soon as January 2nd rolls around, they become Jack Lalanne all of a sudden. You wouldn’t mind them so much but the problem is they cause overcrowding in the workout areas and you quickly lose patience with them as they take three minutes between preacher 2014 Boxing Resolutions
