Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Ivan Redkach vs. Tony Luis

Ivan Redkach vs. Tony Luis

There is a notion in boxing that the valuable skill of pure power is something you are either born with or you’ll never have. Watch Ivan Redkach for just one round and that pure power is evident. When he lands a punch his opponent’s demeanor immediately changes. If he lands flush his opponents are disconnected from their senses. Redkach’s power and ferocity in the ring are downright scary, leading many boxing insiders to believe that it won’t be lon Ivan Redkach vs. Tony Luis

Darchinyan Set to Destroy His Creation

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Despite getting knocked out by Nonito Donaire in their initial encounter back in the summer of 2007, Vic Darchinyan doesn’t seem to be all that impressed with the “Filipino Flash” heading into their rematch this weekend in Corpus Christi, Texas (HBO, 9:30 p.m., ET/PT) at the American Bank Center. Forget all of Donaire’s lofty accomplishments; Darchinyan still doesn’t see what the fuss is all about. “I’ve been in the ring Darchinyan Set to Destroy His Creation

Azad Championship Report - How Does Mares Stack Up?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Gene Blevins - Hoganphotos /Golden Boy Promotions): When you start talking about the elite of boxing, usually Floyd Mayweather, Andre Ward, Juan Manuel Marquez and Sergio Martinez are the names thrown around first and foremost. But there is someone who is often forgotten about according to one Richard Schaefer (who, not so coincidentally, happens to promote this guy): Abner Mares... Azad Championship Report - One Down, Five to Go

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): Boasting an “All Access” reality series, two “documentaries,” media workout clips, conference calls, guest appearances on crossover platforms and ultimately a fight, the media tidal wave “May Day: Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. vs. Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero” was a sight to behold. The fight itself was more an exhibition of the reasons why Mayweather is known as the most gifted and skilled boxer of the modern era. As a compelling prizefight with a Azad Championship Report - One Down, Five to Go

Azad Championship Report - Man in the Middle

By Steve Kim: It’s not unusual for two fighters from the same promotional entity to compete in the ring. In fact, with the state of the business nowadays, it’s the easiest way to make a fight. Most of the major firms, whether they be Golden Boy Promotions, Top Rank, Don King Productions or Main Events, have all made a multitude of in-house match-ups pitting their clients against each other. Azad Championship Report: Abner Mares Makes It Clear

By Steve Kim: After a hard fought and well deserved victory over Anselmo Moreno on Saturday night at the Staples Center, the reigning WBC junior featherweight champion, Abner Mares, wasn’t in the mood to entertain any other fights but one. He didn’t want to hear about Leo Santa Cruz - who once again impressed on the undercard - and don’t even bring up Guillermo Rigondeaux. There’s only one fighter he has his sights set on: WBO beltholder Nonito Donaire... Azad Championship Report: Abner Mares Makes It Clear

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Gene Blevins - Hoganphotos/Golden Boy Promotions): Last December, Abner Mares and Anselmo Moreno, two of the best fighters at super bantamweight - or any division in boxing - shared a bill. Abner Mares: “Moreno is good…but he has never faced an Abner Mares”

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Miguel Salazar): At 5’4½” with a 66” reach and a résumé including three titles in two divisions and the likes of Vic Darchinyan, Yonnhy Perez and Joseph Agbeko, 26-year-old WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares is on the edge of ultra-elite status.
