Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

An island thing

An island thing

An island thing: By Allan Cerf Particulars: Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., October 29th LIVE on Fight Network. The Story: This all Puerto-Rican battle is probably, sans those living on the boxing-crazy island...for boxing junkies only. And there’s only one outcome we ghouls, we hard-core adherents to the world’s hardest sport can hope for - a big KO. An island thing

Donaire-Rigondeaux Start Game of Risk

By Steve Kim: This Saturday night at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, junior featherweight champion Nonito Donaire takes on talented Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux (HBO 11 p.m., ET). A few weeks later, in Las Vegas, in support of Floyd Mayweather’s return against Robert Guerrero, Abner Mares moves up to face WBC featherweight beltholder Daniel Ponce de Leon. Both are two pretty good prizefights between 122 and 126 pounds. But the reality is the fight the public really wanted here was.. Donaire-Rigondeaux Start Game of Risk

The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One

By Steve Kim: Another year has come and passed and it was another 12-month period where we didn’t see Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather square off. And guess what? It was actually still a very eventful and entertaining year for the sport of boxing, regardless. Better yet, it wasn’t completely overtaken by the MMA! (OK, I’m being facetious there.) But seriously, 2012 was a good one for the sport of boxing and its followers. Here’s a look back at what took place this The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One

Big Fight…at Temple

By Steve Kim: As far as Main Events and Kathy Duva are concerned, the big fight card this weekend takes place at Temple University at McGonigle Hall where the latest installment of “Fight Night” on NBC Sports Network showcases heavyweight hopeful Bryant Jennings against Bowie Tupou. Oh, and there’s no fight card in Las Vegas, right? “None that I’m going to be at,” said Kathy Duva with a laugh, knowing full well that most of the attention this week will be diverted to the fourth go- Big Fight…at Temple

Azad Championship Report: Viloria Stayed Ready for Marquez

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): This Saturday night from the Los Angeles Sports Arena, Brian Viloria attempts to unify his WBO flyweight crown versus WBA beltholder Hernan “Tyson” Marquez. This fight which was bandied about through much of the summer is finally set to take place. But for months, various dates and locations were talked about. Through it all, however, there was one constant - Viloria stayed ready at the Wild Card Boxing Club... Azad Championship Report: Viloria Stayed Ready for Marquez

Azad Championship Report: Abner Mares Makes It Clear

By Steve Kim: After a hard fought and well deserved victory over Anselmo Moreno on Saturday night at the Staples Center, the reigning WBC junior featherweight champion, Abner Mares, wasn’t in the mood to entertain any other fights but one. He didn’t want to hear about Leo Santa Cruz - who once again impressed on the undercard - and don’t even bring up Guillermo Rigondeaux. There’s only one fighter he has his sights set on: WBO beltholder Nonito Donaire... Azad Championship Report: Abner Mares Makes It Clear

Patience is a Virtue for Garcia

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): By this juncture of 2012, featherweight Mikey Garcia thought he’d be working on either a title shot or perhaps even defending a belt. Instead, he is taking on seasoned veteran Jonathan Barros as the opener on HBO’s latest installment of “Boxing After Dark” from the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas. No, it’s certainly not the worst thing in the world to be showcased on the “Network of Champions” but this bout was originally scheduled Patience is a Virtue for Garcia

Martirosyan Tweaks Fans on Twitter

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Chances are if you’ve followed Vanes Martirosyan - who faces Erislandy Lara this Saturday night at the Wynn Resort - on Twitter (@VanesBoxing) the past year or so, you’ve probably been either amused, annoyed, angered…or a combination of all three - by his 140-character missives. The bottom line is his messages (with which he’s done everything from call out every marquee name from 154 to 160 pounds and give his rather scathing Martirosyan Tweaks Fans on Twitter

Donaire Goes Back to His Roots

Steve Kim: After enjoying a string of dominant wins in somewhat uneven performances in his last three outings, Nonito Donaire, who essentially tried training himself in Las Vegas (where he now resides), is now firmly entrenched back in San Carlos, California (near the Bay Area) and is back with his team of Brian Schwartz, Mike Bazzel, Remi Korchemny and Victor Conte. Yeah, the results against Omar Narvaez, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. and Jeffrey Mathebula are hard to argue against but the manner in Donaire Goes Back to His Roots

Can Donaire Earn Style Points?

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): In a couple of weeks, a highly anticipated bout takes place between IBF/WBO junior featherweight champion Nonito Donaire and Toshiaki Nishioka (who held the WBC belt with distinction for several years) at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California (headlining on HBO). However, to many, that night’s main event will be the junior welterweight contest featuring Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado. The reason is simple; that match-up is almost guaranteed... Yeah, They Matter

By Steve Kim A couple of weeks ago, our very own Matt Paras penned this illuminating article (* link inside article) which listed the recent ratings on HBO for its boxing programming. You can make what you will off the numbers and what they mean in the big picture but there was a time when the numbers for HBO’s boxing broadcasts were much larger and significant. By Steve Kim: It’s going to be a slow month for boxing - just look at the calendar - but there was an MMA card this weekend. Chavez Jr. Faces a Former “Contender”

Tonight from the Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. defends his WBC middleweight belt versus Peter Manfredo Jr., best known for being a contestant on the inaugural season of NBC’s “The Contender.” To the many fans who want to see Chavez Jr. against stouter opposition, if he’s going to fight former reality show stars, they think he’d be better off facing “Snooki” or “The Situation.” Most are already looking ahead to a 2012 showdown against WBC junior middleweight Chavez Jr. Faces a Former “Contender”

Sometimes When They Touch (Gloves, Over and Over Again)

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): On Saturday night at a packed MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, we saw the rarest of fights involving Manny Pacquiao, who easily dispatched Shane Mosley over 12 rounds. It was a bout that was as one-sided as the odds reflected. From the very onset, Mosley was never in the fight. But while Pacquiao fights, for the most part, have been blowouts in recent years they were affairs that entertained the masses... Sometimes When They Touch (Gloves, Over and Over Again)

Mosley Survives Pacquiao in an Unsatisfying Unanimous Decision

By Ryan Maquiñana, Ringside (Photo © German Villasenor): LAS VEGAS, NV – As Manny Pacquiao knelt triumphantly in the corner of the MGM Grand Garden Arena ring Saturday night, an unfamiliar noise rang out. Ultimately, the Filipino franchise fulfilled what most had prophesized, an asymmetrical and deliberate pounding of future Hall-of-Famer Shane Mosley. However, Pacquiao was unable to defend his WBO welterweight title in style... Mosley Survives Pacquiao in an Unsatisfying Unanimous Decision

The PPV TV Cheat Sheet

By Marty Mulcahey: I am surprised at the unexpectedly positive buzz surrounding tonight’s Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley pay-per-view. The momentum for it has slowly built to a crescendo, which should produce a considerable amount of last-minute impulse purchases, although many potential buyers will be put off by the $65 cost (for high-definition) as I was when I pre-ordered the event. Not only is Agbeko’s IBF bantamweight title at stake; the claim to being the clear challenger to Nonito Donaire as the world’s best 118-pounder is also up for grabs. However... The Island: Part Three- The Mount Rushmore of Puerto Rico

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): Miguel Cotto had the distinction of becoming Puerto Rico’s 50th world champion. It’s an astounding number given that the island’s population is just fewer than four million and an estimated two million Puerto Ricans live in the United States. It’s been stated before that, per-capita, Puerto Rico is perhaps the most successful boxing nation in the world. Judging by these figures, it’s hard to argue... Will These Styles Make a Fight?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): What has most pundits bemoaning the May 7th bout at the MGM Grand between Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley are the two most recent performances of Mosley, who was shut down by the stealthy Floyd Mayweather and the slippery “Latin Snake” Sergio Mora. “Sugar” no longer looked all that sweet in adding a loss and a draw to his ledger. Worse than that, he looked like an old and... Will These Styles Make a Fight?
