Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Alexander-Ortiz fight judged a draw

In another case of ridiculous judging, former world champions Devon Alexander and Victor Ortiz fought to an entertaining majority draw Saturday night at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas. Alexander-Ortiz fight judged a draw

Compiled by Allan Scotto: Hey, fans! Welcome to “Ask Gerry Cooney,” where you get to ask former heavyweight contender “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney any boxing-related question you’d like. Your questions for Gerry’s review will be featured at Maxboxing.com every week. Berto gets his revenge, knocks out Ortiz

By John J. Raspanti: Revenge is best served cold. Former welterweight champion Andre Berto (31-4, 24 KOs) was icy in knocking out Victor Ortiz (31-6-2, 24 KOs) in round four Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA. Berto, 32, came out jabbing in the opening stanza. Ortiz surprised many, including Berto, by boxing from the outside. By the end of the round, Ortiz, 29, was bleeding from his hairline courtesy of an accidental head butt. Ortiz circled to his right in round two... Berto gets his revenge, knocks out Ortiz

A sequel five years too late: Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto do it again

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing.com): Trying to predict what will happen in the ring this Saturday night, when former world champions Victor Ortiz (31-5-2, 24 KOs) and Andre Berto (30-4, 23 KOs) meet for the second time, is equivalent to predicting the outcome of this year’s election. One thing is certain--it’s likely to be a train wreck, but an extremely entertaining one... A sequel five years too late: Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto do it again

HARD DOG BITES: Hunter's Stock Drops & Broner's Dubious Career Arc

By Blake Chavez: Virgil Hunter usually comes off as a cool customer, but in the second half of Amir Khan’s fight vs Chris Algieri, the Bay Area hipster trainer was literally sweating bullets while begging his charge to dig to Algieri’s body. He pleaded with Amir to stay in close when the going got tough, and to avoid running. Interesting to see Hunter in what appeared to be sheer panic-mode. It’s a good thing that Amir followed his own instincts and boxed his way to the win to HARD DOG BITES: Hunter's Stock Drops & Broner's Dubious Career Arc

“Being Floyd Mayweather” Leads to Improved Performance and Victory

By Danny Serratelli at Ringside (Photo © Esther Lin /SHOWTIME): LAS VEGAS - In huge fights between the best on the highest level in the sport, little things mean a lot. After a very competitive fight between Marcos Maidana and Floyd Mayweather took place in May, both fighters and camps were aware that small adjustments leading up to the second fight could lead to the improved results they were seeking. Everyone seemed to be aware that the main idea for Maidana was to duplicate his performance... “Being Floyd Mayweather” Leads to Improved Performance and Victory

Arreola Gives Himself a Fighting Chance

By Steve Kim (Photo © Goossen Tutor Promotions/Brittini Moten): This Saturday night from the hoops home of the USC Trojans, Chris Arreola gets another crack at Bermane Stiverne (ESPN, 8 p.m., ET) at the Galen Center for the vacant WBC heavyweight title. Last year, they met at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, located about an hour away in Ontario. Stiverne broke Arreola’s nose, knocked him down and bloodied him over 12 rounds. Maidana had his Moments But Mayweather Seized "The Moment"

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © German Villasenor): A Floyd Mayweather (46-0, 26 KO’s) fight is an event. All the fanfare, fireworks and fun you could hope for. Oh, yeah, and a boxing match as well. The reigning king of the ring gets to inch towards his goal of 50-0 and his opponent (insert name here) gets to take a crack at being “the man who beat the man”. And, make no mistake, if you are getting a shot at Mayweather you better have something on that night or you are in trouble... Maidana had his Moments But Mayweather Seized "The Moment"

The Best Laid Plans of Khan

By Gabriel Montoya: At age 27, life could not be more in transition for Amir “King” Khan, 28-3 (19). At the end of May, his new wife, Faryal will give birth to their first child, a daughter. Gone now are the days when he roamed around the world with his Khan-tourage through London, L.A. And Vegas and party like youth would last forever. No game reminds you that ever impending old age renders everyone’s game over at some point. Khan is in a delicate place, still feeling mere moments The Best Laid Plans of Khan

Against the Odds

By Steve Kim (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): If you haven’t heard, Marcos Maidana, who faces Floyd Mayweather this Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, is a heavy underdog. Lopez Looks to Rebound from Listless Outing

By Steve Kim: Tonight from the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, CA, Josesito Lopez headlines a special Thursday night edition of “Friday Night Fights” on ESPN2 (9 p.m., ET) against Aaron Martinez. The last time Lopez fought was on December 13th and frankly, he looked…well...not quite like a shot fighter - that would be too harsh of an assessment - but certainly a tad faded in struggling to an eight-round technical decision over the shopworn Mike Arnaoutis. Khan on Mayweather, Polls and the Future

By Gabriel Montoya: On Monday morning, beginning the press tour for his May 3 Showtime pay-per-view bout with Marcos “Chino” Maidana early, Floyd Mayweather Jr. tweeted, “I don’t have an easy fight on May 3, 2014, so I can’t over look @ChinoMaidana but @AmirKingKhan, if you and @AdrienBroner end up fighting... each other on my show and you win (which you won’t)... Old Games, New Schemes, Same Difference

By Gabriel Montoya: Growing up, I didn’t care about the business of boxing. Fights got made or they didn’t. More often than not, they got made as far as I was concerned. I think I went from childhood to teenage fan, only upset that 1) Aaron Pryor and Sugar Ray Leonard didn’t fight each other; 2) Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield weren’t fully in their primes when they fought and 3a) Leonard and Marvelous Marvin Hagler fought too late and 3b) only once. By Steve Kim (Image by Chee, MaxBoxng): I have to be honest; I had no clue whatsoever that Vivian Harris was scheduled to fight this past weekend in the U.K. I was more than relieved to find that his scheduled bout versus Bradley Skeete was scrapped after he failed a pre-fight medical (http://boxingnewsonline.net/latest/news/vivian-harris-fails-medical-so-bradley-skeete-faces-christopher-sebire-instead) but the beat - or should we say, “beatings”... By Steve Kim (Photo © Sumio Yamada): As a law-abiding citizen and someone who certainly doesn’t want to catch the ire of my good friend and press row colleague, Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports, I was in a bit of a bind on Saturday afternoon. Like the rest of America - which was not one of 100 countries able to view Gennady Golovkin’s contest versus Osumanu Adama from Monte Carlo, Monaco, much to the disdain of HBO subscribers - I was relegated to…um…a “radio broadcast.” (And I have to The American Stream

Can Victor Find the “Vicious”?

By Bill Tibbs: “Vicious” Victor Ortiz will return to his day job on January 30th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York after a long break - no pun intended. Ortiz is returning after a broken jaw that saw him leave the ring for what is now nearly two years. His jaw was broken in two places in his last bout against Josesito Lopez in which he was stopped in nine rounds, contesting for the World Boxing Council (WBC) silver welterweight title in June of 2012. Business Before Pugilism

By Steve Kim: 2014 is off to a rather slow start in boxing (basically taking the next month off as HBO and Showtime go dark in February for whatever reason) but starting in early March, it does pick up steam and builds great momentum toward the summer months. The schedule actually looks pretty enticing should it come to fruition. But first and foremost, boxing is a business (news flash, right?) and before any fights happen, deals have to be struck. Oftentimes, these negotiations are more Business Before Pugilism

Orozco Back in Action (Finally)

By Steve Kim: After stopping Ivan Hernandez in three rounds on the night of August 24th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, Antonio Orozco was ready to conclude 2013 with a flourish.
