Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

5 Champs Who Will Remain and 5 Who Will Go in 2015

By Derek Bonnett: As we encounter another new year, the landscape of the boxing scene continues to evolve. With old champions acting out the final stages of their careers and new ones emerging to fill the void, boxing maintains a state of homeostasis and keeps fight fans intrigued even amid the dubious officiating and cries of scandal. Boxing, as always, will endure; however, not every participant with an alphabet title will be so lucky. Inevitably, the mighty will eventually fall and, 5 Champs Who Will Remain and 5 Who Will Go in 2015

Cotto Comes Home

By Steve Kim (Photo © Mikey Williams / Top-Rank): As the calendar was turning to 2014, Miguel Cotto became the most coveted, unattached boxer in the world. Unlike most others, he was a free agent and not under an exclusive promotional pact. With that, there were two highly lucrative offers on the table for him: face Sergio Martinez on HBO Pay-Per-View or face Saul Alvarez across the street at Showtime. Eventually, Cotto turned down the latter - and a... Cotto Comes Home

Vetyeka: the Beginning of the End for Donaire?

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): On Saturday in Macao, China, Nonito Donaire squares off with WBA featherweight champion Simpiwe Vetyeka, 26-2 (16). The fight is for more than a belt. Donaire’s career as an elite, TV fighter may be on the line. It wasn’t always like this. Three years ago, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, 32-2 (21), was at the peak of his career. He’d stopped Fernando Montiel in spectacular fashion and quickly rose on media... Darchinyan Moves Forward, Looks Back

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Vic Darchinyan faces WBA featherweight titlist Nicholas Walters this weekend at the Venetian Resort in Macao, China - but his previous fight is still on his mind. Back on November 9th in Corpus Christi, Texas, Darchinyan was literally just minutes away from pulling off the upset and gaining revenge on Nonito Donaire. Darchinyan was a heavy underdog going into this fight and was up on points when he was stopped in the ninth round... Darchinyan Moves Forward, Looks Back

Showtime Showcases

By Steve Kim: HBO hasn’t had a very good year when it comes to its boxing programming. This was highlighted on March 29th when the network broadcast a main event that featured Sergey Kovalev defending his WBO light heavyweight belt against the unknown Cedric Agnew, who was listed by bookmakers (who are the real experts most of the time) as high as a 38-1 underdog. To add insult to injury, it was announced earlier that week that Adonis Stevenson would be jumping ship to rival Showtime and Showtime Showcases

How Much Does Pacquiao Have Left?

By Steve Kim (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): Manny Pacquiao is a fighter of many punches. However, most of the time, he’s a man of few words, which is a bit of a problem when you attempt to interview him. No, it’s not that he’s unpleasant or angry with the media - he’s just the opposite in fact - but by nature, he’s a soft-spoken individual (at least with the American press) and while much is on the line this upcoming Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena How Much Does Pacquiao Have Left?

Leo on Cruz Control

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © K9 Photos): Tomorrow night, Leo Santa Cruz and Cristian Mijares will do battle at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada for champion Santa Cruz’s World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight title. Mijares, 49-7-2 (24), looks to come in and be the first to add an “L” to the popular champion’s résumé. Meanwhile, Santa Cruz will look to remain undefeated in the second defense of the title he won in August of 2013. The always smiling, Rosemead, California resident Santa C Leo on Cruz Control

The Belle of the Ball

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): He isn’t the best boxer in the game, perhaps not even the best fighter in his respective division. But currently, there is no individual in boxing more important or pivotal than Miguel Cotto. In a business more fractured and divided than ever, the Puerto Rican icon finds himself the key piece on the chess board. He finds himself courted by promotional powerhouses Top Rank Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions and fought over by network titans HBO The Belle of the Ball

Darchinyan Set to Destroy His Creation

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Despite getting knocked out by Nonito Donaire in their initial encounter back in the summer of 2007, Vic Darchinyan doesn’t seem to be all that impressed with the “Filipino Flash” heading into their rematch this weekend in Corpus Christi, Texas (HBO, 9:30 p.m., ET/PT) at the American Bank Center. Forget all of Donaire’s lofty accomplishments; Darchinyan still doesn’t see what the fuss is all about. “I’ve been in the ring Darchinyan Set to Destroy His Creation

Get Ready for a Fast and Furious Fall

By Steve Kim: With the turn of the calendar and the summer coming to a close, boxing (which had been in a relative slumber) comes back to life starting this week. Maxboxing readers and fans often ask me, “Why do boxing and the networks shut it down between June and August?” The answer is very simple; since it’s evident that television viewing levels are down in the summer months (as people go on vacation, etc.), promoters and television execs aren’t as willing to stage major cards Get Ready for a Fast and Furious Fall

By Marc Livitz (Photo © SHOWTIME): While many of us as boxing fans love to count down the days leading up to the next big fight, there are still high numbers of the boxing faithful who truly appreciate the fighter who treads on and on. Azad Championship Report - Is Pacquiao-Rios a Tough Sell?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): On November 23rd in Macao, Manny Pacquiao faces Brandon Rios in a fight distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View. The press tour for this fight that began in Asia concluded on Thursday afternoon at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The fight is historic in one respect: its locale. “We haven’t had a pay-per-view mega-fight overseas in our history. By Steve Kim: In five weeks the most highly-anticipated pay-per-view card of 2013 takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas when Floyd Mayweather faces Saul Alvarez. What has added to the anticipation of this event is the addition of Lucas Matthysse’s battle versus Danny Garcia, a fight that could easily headline on Showtime on its own merits. Francisco's Fortune: Panning for Gold Fists

By Gabriel Montoya: A boxing trainer’s life is not unlike a gold miner’s. You work your particular stretch of stream, sifting the silt, separating out the rocks and rabble in search of that one piece of gold you can ride out of this Godforsaken place - if only for 10-to-12 rounds and some glory at a time. A fighter’s life is lonely. A trainer’s life is insanely anything but. “The Machine” Begins His March

By Steve Kim: While it may not draw 40,000 fans and have a worldwide audience or a million pay-per-view buys (or less, depending on who you ask), this weekend, Showtime (9 p.m., ET/PT) just might have the best pure fight on its schedule when a junior welterweight (plus one pound) showdown takes place at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City between Lucas Matthysse and Lamont Peterson. By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): At age 37 with a bushel full of belts in his collection and 44 fights on his ledger, Vic Darchinyan is by all accounts an old fighter. But as he faces Javier Gallo tonight (UniMas 11:30 ET/PT) from the Uni-Trade Stadium in Laredo, Texas, he is in certain ways very new.
