Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Russell Jr. floors Gonzalez three times, wins WBC title

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © Esther Lin / SHOWTIME): Gary Russell Jr. made the most of his second attempt at a world title by stopping defending WBC featherweight titleholder Jhonny Gonzalez in round four at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada Saturday night. With a big edge in quickness and mobility, Russell Jr. (26-1, 15 KOs) worked angles and kept the heavy-handed Gonzalez at bay in round one. Gonzalez, a little taller, and with a reach advantage, stalked but mostly drew air... Russell Jr. floors Gonzalez three times, wins WBC title

On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings

By Derek Bonnett: Jermain Taylor and Cornelius Bundrage are once again world champions. There, I said it. I wish I would have said it last week, but at that time the very notion of Jermain Taylor and Cornelius Bundrage regaining their former world titles seemed highly unthinkable. In Taylor’s case, the notion seemed laughable to me. Group that with boxing’s persistence to prove itself the “Theater of the Unexpected” and the fact that I haven’t been able to pick a boxing match to save my life... Barthelemy defeats Saucedo; Martirosyan beats Nelson, Karpency stuns Dawson

By Stephen Tobey at ringside: MASHANTUCKET, Conn. – Fernando David Saucedo took the best from Rances Barthelemy. Barthelemy avoided just about everything Saucedo threw in return and retained his International Boxing Federation junior lightweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday at Foxwoods Resort Casino. Julie Lederman, Bill Morandi and Frank Lombardi all scored it 120-108 for Barthelemy, a native of Cuba now living in Las Vegas. He improved to 21-0 (12 knockouts)... Uncle Joe is Back

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos, MaxBoxing): In support of this weekend’s pay-per-view main event from the MGM Grand Garden Arena is a bout for the WBA interim super featherweight title between Bryan Vasquez and Jose Felix, in what looks to be a competitive fight (at least on paper). Martirosyan Begins New Chapter

By Steve Kim: Tonight from the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa, Vanes Martirosyan headlines this week’s edition of ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights” when he faces Mario Lozano. After 35 professional contests under his belt, this will be the first that won’t take place under the Top Rank Promotions banner. After his loss to Demetrius Andrade back in November, he was given a release by the company. Martirosyan then inked a deal with Dan Goossen to promote his career moving forward... Do We Believe Chavez Now?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): This weekend, HBO gets back into the boxing business as it broadcasts the rematch between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Bryan Vera from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The last time they fought on September 28th, 2013, Vera seemed to outwork and outhustle the son of “J.C. Superstar” over 10 rounds. Yet as the scorecards were read, the trio of Gwen Adair, Marty Denkin and Carla Caiz, rendered a “business” decision in favor of Chavez... Do We Believe Chavez Now?

Hard-Earned Respect for Bradley

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): At this time last year, Tim Bradley was in a rather dark mood. Coming off what should’ve been a career-changing victory over Manny Pacquiao in June of 2012, he became a boxing pariah, resolute and unapologetic in accepting the controversial split decision over the Filipino icon. And soon, Bradley found out that fan is short for “fanatic.” “I got mail, death threats, y’ know, phone calls, letters, ‘You didn’t win this fight; give the Hard-Earned Respect for Bradley

Anson Wainwright: Through out the annals of time many very good fighters have failed to win a world title. Notably Sam Langford, Charley Burley etc. While it’s easier to win a world title today than in bygone years, there are still some very talented fighters who have yet to win a professional title. 5 Best active fighters yet to have won a world title

The Belle of the Ball

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): He isn’t the best boxer in the game, perhaps not even the best fighter in his respective division. But currently, there is no individual in boxing more important or pivotal than Miguel Cotto. In a business more fractured and divided than ever, the Puerto Rican icon finds himself the key piece on the chess board. He finds himself courted by promotional powerhouses Top Rank Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions and fought over by network titans HBO The Belle of the Ball

Crawford Continues His Rise

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): : When you ask the co-manager of lightweight Terence Crawford, who faces Andrey Klimov this Saturday night from the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida (HBO 9:45 p.m., ET), just how good his charge is, Brian McIntyre doesn’t pull his punches. “I think he’s the best, man,” he says of Crawford’s standing at 135 pounds.”I think he’s number one; he just doesn’t have that title. Beltran Gets Title Opportunity

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): Ray Beltran, who challenges WBO lightweight beltholder Ricky Burns this weekend in Glasgow, was boxing’s angriest man not too long ago. In the wake of questionable decision losses to Sharif Bogere and Luis Ramos two fights later, he had had it with the politics of the sport, which oftentimes supersedes what takes place in the ring. Get Ready for a Fast and Furious Fall

By Steve Kim: With the turn of the calendar and the summer coming to a close, boxing (which had been in a relative slumber) comes back to life starting this week. Maxboxing readers and fans often ask me, “Why do boxing and the networks shut it down between June and August?” The answer is very simple; since it’s evident that television viewing levels are down in the summer months (as people go on vacation, etc.), promoters and television execs aren’t as willing to stage major cards Get Ready for a Fast and Furious Fall

Azad Championship Report - Santa Cruz Faces His Toughest Test

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): Co-headlining this Saturday night’s card from the StubHub Center (Showtime 10:30 p.m., ET/7:30 p.m., PT) is Leo Santa Cruz, a fighter on quite a run recently. At this time last year, he was still just a relatively unknown beltholder still trying to gain a foothold in the business. Left at the Altar Again

By Steve Kim: The news spread quickly throughout the Twittersphere on Monday night that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. had suffered a cut during training, which eventually caused a postponement of his September 7th appointment against Brian Vera. And how did Vera find out? “Basically through the people on Twitter and I got a text from you,” said Vera (and yes, this scribe did reach out to the rugged Texan as speculation ran rampant on Chavez Jr.’s status). “I was hoping it was going to be a joke but Left at the Altar Again

Back to Business for Banks

By Steve Kim: The first time Johnathon Banks faced Seth Mitchell back in November, there was quite a bit going on in his life. With the sudden passing of legendary trainer Emanuel Steward in October, he was thrust into the position of taking the reins as lead trainer for Wladimir Klitschko, who just happened to face Mariusz Wach in Germany. This just one week before his own bout with Mitchell in Atlantic City. And in the midst of all this, Banks attended Steward’s funeral in Detroit on the way Back to Business for Banks

Erislandy Lara: “That's what I do. I am a winner”

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Gene Blevins - Hoganphotos /Golden Boy Promotions): There’s a knock on Cuban fighters that they aren’t very exciting when they turn pro. Because of a dedicated and regimented amateur system, essentially Cuba’s pro system, and way of showing the rest of the world the country can be isolated and dominant, the boxers who do turn pro end up stuck in an amateur style. They stick and move and defend perfectly but in an oft-times boring fashion. Cuban southpaw junior Erislandy Lara: “That's what I do. I am a winner”

Darchinyan Starts Anew

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): At age 37 with a bushel full of belts in his collection and 44 fights on his ledger, Vic Darchinyan is by all accounts an old fighter. But as he faces Javier Gallo tonight (UniMas 11:30 ET/PT) from the Uni-Trade Stadium in Laredo, Texas, he is in certain ways very new. There have been a few changes surrounding the “Raging Bull.” “I now have a new manager, new promoter,” he told Maxboxing a few days ago. “I signed with Top Rank. Santa Cruz Returns, Rested and Rejuvenated

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): On December 15th, Leo Santa Cruz put on a late-finishing kick to defeat the pesky Alberto Guevara at the Los Angeles Sports Arena over 12 rounds. It put a capper on a 2012 where Santa Cruz performed five times and went from a relatively unknown prospect to a world champion who built a fan following for his active, hard-hitting style. But on this early afternoon, for the most part, Santa Cruz looked like a fatigued fighter. Known for his impressive work Santa Cruz Returns, Rested and Rejuvenated

Lee Pulls Goossen Back In

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): Joe Goossen knows exactly how Michael Corleone felt in “The Godfather Part III.” It wasn’t that long ago when the respected trainer - best known for working with the Ruelas brothers, Michael Nunn, Diego Corrales and Joel Casamayor - swore off working with novice boxers. Sick and tired of the grind (and really, the lack of loyalty in this business), he made a vow that while he was still a gun-for-hire or a troubleshooter for established prizefighters, his Lee Pulls Goossen Back In

Medina Fights for More than Himself

By Steve Kim: There are plenty of reasons why boxers do what they do. When Rocky Balboa’s would-be wife, Adrian, asked this question of him on their first date (in a memorable scene at a closed ice skating rink they had all to themselves in the original “Rocky”), the hard-luck pugilist replied, “Because I can’t sing or dance.” This punchline is another way of saying they do it because they may not have a lot of other options. I Said That? A 2012 Preview Review: Part Two

By Marty Mulcahey: In Part One of the annual “Preview Review,” I lamented journalists making predictions in 2012 certain in the knowledge that few readers will remember what was penned 365 days ago. To write for Maxboxing is to be held to a higher standard. To that end, I venture back in time to review my predictions for 2012, a yearly ritual of evaluating choices that fluctuates between self-abuse and narcissism. The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One

By Steve Kim: Another year has come and passed and it was another 12-month period where we didn’t see Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather square off. And guess what? It was actually still a very eventful and entertaining year for the sport of boxing, regardless. Better yet, it wasn’t completely overtaken by the MMA! (OK, I’m being facetious there.) But seriously, 2012 was a good one for the sport of boxing and its followers. Here’s a look back at what took place this The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One

Can Mares-Donaire Get Made?

By Steve Kim: In the immediate aftermath of Abner Mares’ convincing victory over the respected Anselmo Moreno on November 10th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, conversations centered on having Mares - who holds the WBC junior featherweight title - face the WBO beltholder, Nonito Donaire, in 2013. It seems like a natural fight, one yearned for by at least the hardcore boxing fans, between two boxers who have been featured regularly on the premium cable networks the past couple of Can Mares-Donaire Get Made?
