Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Azad Championship Report - Jhonny Be Good

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): A funny thing happened on the way to a crosstown showdown between Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares, which would’ve have been a robust promotion next year in Los Angeles. Santa Cruz had done his part by dismantling the usually stout Victor Terrazas in three rounds to capture the WBC junior featherweight title at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Then in the evening’s main event...well, Jhonny Gonzalez happened... Azad Championship Report - Jhonny Be Good

Mares And Gonzalez Ready For War

By Marc Livitz (Photo © SHOWTIME): While many of us as boxing fans love to count down the days leading up to the next big fight, there are still high numbers of the boxing faithful who truly appreciate the fighter who treads on and on. Those fighters who have fought almost a “who’s who” in the ring can often rouse our interests. He has won most and lost just a handful. Add to the mix one who hails from a boxing crazed nation such as Mexico. Enter Jhonny Gonzalez... Mares And Gonzalez Ready For War

Exiled?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Last month, a press conference was held at the Beverly Hills Hotel to announce the October 12th pay-per-view match between Juan Manuel Marquez and Tim Bradley. Before the official proceedings started, this reporter inquired about when Guillermo Rigondeaux’s next date on HBO might be. A Top Rank executive had a reaction that was akin to Jim Mora’s (in)famous “Playoffs?!” rant. “Next date? They want nothing to do with him,” was the Exiled?

Rigondeaux claims his place among the best

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): I once had the pleasure of witnessing unified super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux dance across the canvas to some of the most violent artists the world has ever known at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, CA. The southpaw Cuban legend known as “El Chacal” (The Jackal) was preparing for his fifth fight as a professional after an amateur career that boasted 2 gold medals among top honors at every world championship you... In the gym with Nonito Donaire: "We're preparing for 20 rounds"

Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): In the second week of March, I had the pleasure of visiting super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire at his training camp in San Carlos, CA’s “Undisputed Boxing Gym” as he prepared for Saturday’s unification bout with Cuban amateur boxing legend Guillermo Rigondeaux to be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and televised on HBO. The fight is one of two that Donaire, the 2012 Fighter of the Year, wishes to have in 2013, the other In the gym with Nonito Donaire: "We're preparing for 20 rounds"

Lessons from Boxing’s PED Files

By Gabriel Montoya: When it comes to the subject of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) in general and state-of-the-art drug testing in particular, boxing has come a long way in the last three years. Three years ago, boxing fans didn’t know what carbon isotope ratio testing (CIR), EPO, IGF-1 or the drug of choice these days, synthetic testosterone, was. The process of moving a dinosaur sport like boxing into the present can be daunting but considering the milestones and the distance traveled in Lessons from Boxing’s PED Files

I Said That? A 2012 Preview Review: Part One

By Marty Mulcahey: It is that time of the New Year for me again, my yearly ritual of evaluating predictions made over the previous year. It is an annual act which fluctuates wildly between self-abuse and narcissism. Visitors to sports websites are sure to notice how easy it is for writers to make predictions at this time of the year, certain in the knowledge that few will remember what they wrote 365 days from now. Here at Maxboxing, we have higher standards and are held accountable for what is I Said That? A 2012 Preview Review: Part One

The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One

By Steve Kim: Another year has come and passed and it was another 12-month period where we didn’t see Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather square off. And guess what? It was actually still a very eventful and entertaining year for the sport of boxing, regardless. Better yet, it wasn’t completely overtaken by the MMA! (OK, I’m being facetious there.) But seriously, 2012 was a good one for the sport of boxing and its followers. Here’s a look back at what took place this The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One

Donaire leads boxing into the future

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Since July of 2012, Nonito Donaire, 30-1, 19 KOs, has been showing the boxing world he is a truly clean athlete. When the super bantamweight champion signed up to join to be the inaugural fighter in the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association’s state-of-the-art 24/7/365 year-round anti-doping program, he began sending a message to the sport and to his fans that his in the ring accomplishments are all natural. Scott Quigg: Very Mexican

By Steve Kim: As you see young super bantamweight hopeful Scott Quigg, who hails from the United Kingdom, and you witness his hard-charging style, replete with a variety of body shots (most notably a well-placed left hook downstairs) you swear you’re seeing a classic Mexican fighter in there. Guess what? Quigg, who is undefeated at 24-0-1 (with 17 stoppages) doesn’t disagree with this assessment... Scott Quigg: Very Mexican

A Long and Twisted Drug Testing Road for Boxing

By Gabriel Montoya: On November 24 at the Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario, CA, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero gets a tough assignment against Andre Berto. He wanted a big fight with Floyd Mayweather, the current WBC champ at 147 and a titleholder at 154. A Tim Bradley fight was on the horizon as well but some blame Bradley for this fight. Others blame the large bite Golden Boy was taking out of the $1.2 million fee offered to Guerrero. In any case, what fight fans and the fighters get is another... Sweet Savagery

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): It’s rare that the sport of boxing - which too many times lets down its fan base - not only delivers on its promises but exceeds them. That’s precisely what took place at the Home Depot Center this past weekend as Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado put on a display of beautiful brutality that saw “Bam Bam” eventually halt Alvarado after seven rounds of pulsating action with an... Nishioka’s fighting heart drives him towards Donaire

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): At the end of 2010, super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka, 39-4-3, 24 KOs, was named Japan’s “Fighter of the Year.” At the ceremony, a video challenge by Fernando Montiel was made to Nishioka who readily accepted. The bout would have been a fight fan’s dream: Arguably the best 118 pound boxer/puncher from Mexico against the best 122 pound fighter out of Japan. But... Donaire Goes Back to His Roots

Steve Kim: After enjoying a string of dominant wins in somewhat uneven performances in his last three outings, Nonito Donaire, who essentially tried training himself in Las Vegas (where he now resides), is now firmly entrenched back in San Carlos, California (near the Bay Area) and is back with his team of Brian Schwartz, Mike Bazzel, Remi Korchemny and Victor Conte. Yeah, the results against Omar Narvaez, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. and Jeffrey Mathebula are hard to argue against but the manner in Donaire Goes Back to His Roots

Rios/Alvarado/Gatti: What Defines Greatness?

By Gabriel Montoya: While the question of who will come out victorious won’t be answered until somewhere around 8 p.m. on Saturday night in Carson, CA’s Home Depot Center, that Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios vs. “Mile High” Mike Alvarado has potential to be something special is a certainty. Alvarado and Rios are two hardnosed, honest men who give no quarter and take no sh*t. “Mile High” Opportunity for Alvarado

By Steve Kim: On Saturday night, perhaps the most anticipated bout for hardcore fight fans takes place when Mike Alvarado squares off against Brandon Rios at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California (HBO 10 p.m., ET). It’s a fight that many pundits and observers are openly comparing to the legendary contests featuring Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward. Can Donaire Earn Style Points?

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): In a couple of weeks, a highly anticipated bout takes place between IBF/WBO junior featherweight champion Nonito Donaire and Toshiaki Nishioka (who held the WBC belt with distinction for several years) at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California (headlining on HBO). However, to many, that night’s main event will be the junior welterweight contest featuring Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado. The reason is simple; that match-up is almost guaranteed... The Divide

By Steve Kim: The numbers are in from the conflicting cards in Las Vegas staged between Top Rank and Golden Boy. The shows at the Thomas and Mack Center and the MGM Grand each did well at the box-office (although many have raised doubts about the veracity of the figures from the promotion featuring Saul “Canelo” Alvarez) with Showtime reporting strong Nielsen numbers and HBO Pay-Per-View announcing 475,000 buys for the Sergio Martinez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight... By Gabriel Montoya: It was all respect with a lovely chocolate cake on the side in downtown Los Angeles last week when IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire met with Toshiaki Nishioka to announce their October 13 showdown at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. By Steve Kim: This Saturday night from the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington, lightweight Jose “El Loco” Hernandez faces Robert Osiobe in a scheduled 10-round affair. And it’s his third outing with manager Frank Espinoza, who inked him to a deal earlier this year. Fall Classic?

By Steve Kim: Under the previous regime at HBO, it was rare that boxing would even be scheduled in the month of October. But now that a Yankee fan is no longer in charge over there (honestly, I’m not sure which ball club Ken Hershman supports), HBO has put together a very good looking doubleheader in... Fall Classic?
