Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

By John J. Raspanti: When last seen in the ring, six-foot-eight-inch giant David Price stood in his corner with a dazed expression on his face, tears rolling down his cheeks. Top 10 Year in Review

By Mikko Salo: The year 2014 saw the heavyweight division gather momentum on different fronts. In Europe, the main market in today`s heavyweight landscape, the Undisputed Champion Wladimir Klitschko fought a 5-round barnburner against top contender Kubrat Pulev. The entertaining HBO-televised match-up proved us once again what kind of a special era in heavyweight boxing we are all witnessing. Klitschko is one of the all-time heavyweight kings and is not about to relinquish his crown... Top 10 Year in Review

Fight On! Random Thoughts from the USC

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): This past Saturday night at the Galen Center on the campus of USC, Bermane Stiverne captured the vacant WBC heavyweight title with a sixth-round stoppage of Chris Arreola in an entertaining affair, nationally televised on ESPN. Here are some random thoughts from ringside this past weekend... - No, this wasn’t George Foreman-Ron Lyle but by today’s standards, Stiverne-Arreola II was a very good heavyweight scrap. Early on... The 2013 “K9 Awards”: Part 1

By Steve Kim: 2013 is now in the books and it was a banner year for the sport of boxing. While we had the lingering “Cold War” between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank Promotions and the separating leagues of boxing fostered on Showtime and HBO, it was still a year filled with big events, great fights and memorable moments. So without any further ado, let’s get to the always anticipated “K9 Awards”... FIGHTER OF THE YEAR... The 2013 “K9 Awards”: Part 1

The Pay-Per-View Soapbox – Aug. 8, 2013

By Steve Kim: In five weeks the most highly-anticipated pay-per-view card of 2013 takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas when Floyd Mayweather faces Saul Alvarez. What has added to the anticipation of this event is the addition of Lucas Matthysse’s battle versus Danny Garcia, a fight that could easily headline on Showtime on its own merits. Whoever was waffling on purchasing “The One,” is now probably off the fence. They will be forking over their hard earned money for this show... The Pay-Per-View Soapbox – Aug. 8, 2013

Reid Pushes Scott

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): It was the last sparring session for heavyweight Malik Scott this past Friday afternoon before departing for London where he faces Dereck Chisora at the Wembley Arena this upcoming weekend. And as he went six spirited rounds with two different sparring partners (one of them being Lateef “Power” Kayode), you heard something from his trainer that you’ve never heard before. “Sell tickets! Sell tickets!” were the exhortations heard from Jesse Reid... Reid Pushes Scott

Tony “The Tiger” Thompson: the Boxer Who Came in from the Old

By Gabriel Montoya: Fans always talk about how screwed up the heavyweights are. Our late old friend and historian Bert Sugar used to tell anyone and everyone who would listen that if you put the world’s top heavyweights in a police line-up, in full fight gear and title belt regalia, no one would know who they were. But that joke is old. Sure, Joe Frazier isn’t even approaching the building much walking through that door but there is more to boxing’s glamour division than meets the eye... Summer Snooze

By Steve Kim: If you’re a boxing fan, right now, you’re pretty much like a football fan - you can’t wait for September. Because from that point on, boxing has a strong slate of fights lined up (headlined by marquee pay-per-view events spaced out a month apart featuring the likes of Floyd Mayweather vs. Saul Alvarez, Tim Bradley vs. Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios). But as usual, the summer months are a drag for those who follow the “Sweet Science.”... Summer Snooze

Thompson does it again, stops Price in five

By John j. Raspanti: Heavyweight contender Tony Thompson (38-3, 26 KOs) reiterated his dominance of British champion David Price (15-2, 13 KOs) by stopping him in five rounds at The Echo Arena in Liverpool, England. Thompson knocked out Price in the same arena last March. This time it took three more rounds, but not before Price almost achieved his redemption by flooring Thompson in round two. The wily old-timer survived the onslaught to stagger Price a few minutes later... Thompson does it again, stops Price in five

Seth Mitchell, Al Haymon and Boxing Purgatory

By Alec Kohut (Photo © SHOWTIMW): On the day following the 2012 election, just before his first fight with Johnathon Banks, Seth Mitchell held a media workout where he trains in Clinton, Maryland. Somewhere between the typical media questions about sparring and if he’d like to face a Klitschko following this fight, Mitchell was asked how damaging a loss would be at this point in his career. Mitchell responded, “A loss now would set me back about two years.” Mitchell was right. Banks’ two-round.. Seth Mitchell, Al Haymon and Boxing Purgatory

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Originally, Terence Crawford was scheduled to face spoiler deluxe Robert Osiobe this weekend at the Mandalay Bay before HBO’s lights went on for the Brandon Rios-Mike Alvarado rematch (Saturday, 10:15 p.m., ET/PT). Seth Abraham’s New Perspective: Part One

By Steve Kim: For many years during his reign as the president of HBO Sports (from 1978 to 2000), Seth Abraham was perhaps the most powerful and influential man in the boxing business. Yes, it was ruled promotionally by the likes of Bob Arum, Don King and Dan Duva but as this cable network made more and more of a commitment to the sport, it was Abraham who controlled the purse strings that these figures would rely on to make the game’s biggest matches. Azad Championship Report: The Weekend TV Cheat Sheet – Feb. 22, 2013

By Marty Mulcahey: Boxing fans are spoiled for choice this weekend with seven televised shows if widely available Spanish television networks are included in their viewing habits. This excess of action motivated me to try something new; instead of focusing on only one card, I am cherry-picking two world title fight main events since their undercards are lacking in either intrigue or competitiveness. I have been asked about other bouts this weekend as well and decided to make picks for other Azad Championship Report: The Weekend TV Cheat Sheet – Feb. 22, 2013

Fights I’d Like to See in 2013

By Steve Kim (Photo © Miguel Salazar): So 2013 is officially upon us. And the hope for all boxing fans is that this year is as fun and entertaining as the past year where there was no shortage of memorable moments and good ol’ fashioned slugfests. Most of the early schedule has been cemented but here are some fights - as a boxing fan - I’d like to see at some point in the next 12 months. First, however, are the requirements for the bouts I chose for my wish list... Fights I’d Like to See in 2013

The First Quarter

By Steve Kim: There is a big multi-title fight card in Japan taking place today but for the most part, we can turn the page on 2012 and look ahead to the New Year. And the early schedule for the networks has been formulated. Here’s a look ahead to what we have in store for the first quarter of 2013... JANUARY 19th (HBO) - Gennady Golovkin vs. Gabe Rosado, Orlando Salido vs. Mikey Garcia and Rocky Martinez vs. Juan Carlos Burgos: OK, this card at the Theater at Madison Square Garden is The First Quarter

Mark Breland on training heavyweight Deontay Wilder

By Gabriel Montoya: Anymore, it’s easy to say the heavyweight division in North America is deader ‘n Disco. But that isn’t the truth. Sure, the UK has Wlad and Vitali Klitschko, champion heavyweight brothers of the world. It also has David Price, David Haye, Tyson Fury, Alexander Povetkin, and Robert Helenius. North America? Ready to make another is Riverside, CA’s Chris Arreola. By all appearances he is dedicated to training as never before. That is to say, he trains consistently.
