Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Why Hopkins is fighting Kovalev

Why Hopkins is fighting Kovalev

By Vikram Birring (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): Many years ago, Bernard Hopkins was an afterthought in boxing at the championship level. He lost two close decisions to Jermain Taylor, in which he saved his energy until the final rounds and mounted furious rallies, but gave up too many early ones to win on the scorecards. He claimed that the weight hindered his energy amount, not his age; at the time he was forty, ancient in boxing terms. So he moved up to 175 pounds, to face... Why Hopkins is fighting Kovalev

How Binding?

By Steve Kim: With much fanfare - and to the disappointment of many boxing fans - it was announced last week that the reigning light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson would be facing Andrzej Fonfara on May 24th in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as part of a deal struck with Showtime (which could eventually lead to a bout against Bernard Hopkins). Simply put, this means a fall bout between Stevenson and WBO beltholder Sergey Kovalev on HBO (which had been laying out this match-up for... How Binding?

The 2013 “K9 Awards”: Part 1

By Steve Kim: 2013 is now in the books and it was a banner year for the sport of boxing. While we had the lingering “Cold War” between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank Promotions and the separating leagues of boxing fostered on Showtime and HBO, it was still a year filled with big events, great fights and memorable moments. So without any further ado, let’s get to the always anticipated “K9 Awards”... FIGHTER OF THE YEAR... The 2013 “K9 Awards”: Part 1

Something of the Year

By Gabriel Montoya: This is that list time of the year. What did I think was best out of all the things that happened in boxing? Which fighter’s journey affected me most? Life is comprised of moments. “Remember that time...?” Boxing is that to an extreme. Round one of Marvelous Marvin Hagler vs. Tommy Hearns. An entire series of battles in three minutes. The Fight to Make at 175

By Steve Kim: In front of a lively and sizable throng at the Colisee de Quebec in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, the duo of Sergey Kovalev and Adonis Stevenson put on a display of power-punching that was both impressive and awe-inspiring this past Thanksgiving weekend. Kovalev, the co-headliner on this HBO broadcast, took care of Ismayl Sillakh - considered a “live” dog by some (OK; OK, admittedly that was me) - in two rounds and Stevenson dispatched the ballsy Tony Bellew in six heats. Instead The Fight to Make at 175

A Testy Issue and Other Boxing Thoughts

By Gabriel Montoya: A Testy Issue...The random anti-doping testing issue makes some boxing people touchy but it seems like some fighters, following the example set by Floyd Mayweather Jr. over three years ago, definitely want it. Danny Garcia wanted it for Lucas Matthysse. Timothy Bradley has gotten it twice now in a row. He’ll keep doing it; I’ll bet. Freddie Roach wanted it for Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios. Ruslan Provodnikov has been doing it voluntarily two fights in a row A Testy Issue and Other Boxing Thoughts

Stevenson Looks to Cement Fighter of the Year Status vs. Bellew

By Gabriel Montoya: Coming into 2013, current WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson, 22-1 (19), was thought of a prospect and possible suspect. Heading into his fourth fight of the year and second defense of his light heavyweight crown Saturday against Tony Bellew, 20-1-1 (12), at the Colisee de Quebec live on HBO, Stevenson is arguably on track to be 2013’s “Fighter of the Year.” To start the year, the Port-au-Prince, Haiti native with a criminal past, now making his Stevenson Looks to Cement Fighter of the Year Status vs. Bellew

Valdez, Left in the Bullpen

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Back on the night of September 28th, young featherweight hopeful Oscar Valdez believed he would be entering the ring at the StubHub Center in Carson, California between 6 and 7 p.m. as part of the undercard featuring Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s return against Bryan Vera. Chavez Loses in Winning

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): The boos came cascading down on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. as he was announced as the unanimous winner over the game Bryan Vera on at the StubHub Center in Carson, California on Saturday night. While he may have technically been the victor, make no doubt about it: the bloom is currently off this rose. The Chavez brand took another hit. Stevenson busts Cloud, Chavez adds insult to apathy with decision “win”

By Gabriel Montoya: (Photo © German Villasenor): Saturday night’s main event between Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr and Brian Vera hopefully will become a problem for Top Rank, the California State Athletic Commission and he three ringside judges who scored what should have been a clear win for Vera, a wide unanimous decision for Chavez, Jr. Three blind mice named Gwen Adair (98-92), Carla Caiz (96-94) and Marty Denkin (97-93) brought flat out shame to their positions and the sport with their... The Disappearance of Tavoris Cloud

By Steve Kim: Last Thursday afternoon, a teleconference was scheduled for the participants of this weekend’s light heavyweight championship battle between Adonis Stevenson and Tavoris Cloud, co-headlining HBO’s (10:15 p.m. ET/PT) split-site doubleheader from the Bell Centre in Montreal. While Stevenson and his promoter were present for this function, Cloud was a no-show. It turns out he was training (or something like that. Three is not a Crowd

By Steve Kim: Before David Haye suffered a cut in sparring that nixed his bout against Tyson Fury, HBO was scheduled to telecast a tripleheader (from three different sites, no less) this upcoming weekend. The light heavyweight championship bout between Adonis Stevenson and Tavoris Cloud from the Bell Centre in Montreal and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s return versus Brian Vera from the StubHub Center in Carson, California were scheduled to accommodate the now-canceled heavyweight bout from Britain... Get Ready for a Fast and Furious Fall

By Steve Kim: With the turn of the calendar and the summer coming to a close, boxing (which had been in a relative slumber) comes back to life starting this week. Maxboxing readers and fans often ask me, “Why do boxing and the networks shut it down between June and August?” The answer is very simple; since it’s evident that television viewing levels are down in the summer months (as people go on vacation, etc.), promoters and television execs aren’t as willing to stage major cards Get Ready for a Fast and Furious Fall

Azad Championship Report - Santa Cruz Faces His Toughest Test

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): Co-headlining this Saturday night’s card from the StubHub Center (Showtime 10:30 p.m., ET/7:30 p.m., PT) is Leo Santa Cruz, a fighter on quite a run recently. At this time last year, he was still just a relatively unknown beltholder still trying to gain a foothold in the business. Left at the Altar Again

By Steve Kim: The news spread quickly throughout the Twittersphere on Monday night that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. had suffered a cut during training, which eventually caused a postponement of his September 7th appointment against Brian Vera. And how did Vera find out? “Basically through the people on Twitter and I got a text from you,” said Vera (and yes, this scribe did reach out to the rugged Texan as speculation ran rampant on Chavez Jr.’s status). “I was hoping it was going to be a joke but Left at the Altar Again

Azad Championship Report - Stevenson Kronks out Dawson

By Gabriel Montoya: The origin of raw knockout power is the best mystery in boxing. We can use science to measure punching power as HBO has apparently been using a device under the fighter’s wraps to measure this very thing for some time now from what I am told. Pure knockout power can be harnessed with solid fighting technique to be sure. The straighter the shot, the better the torque, snap and speed with which it the punch lands. But raw knockout power - and why some have it and... Azad Championship Report - Stevenson Kronks out Dawson

By Steve Kim: This Saturday at the O2 Arena in London, England, a highly anticipated rematch takes place in the super middleweight division between Mikkel Kessler and Carl Froch (HBO, 6 p.m., ET/3 p.m. PT and 10 p.m., ET). The first time they met was back on April 24th, 2010 in Hernig, Denmark, where Kessler won a hard-fought, exciting unanimous decision in one of the better fights of Showtime’s “Super Six” series. Joel Diaz Jr. Finally Descends the Mountain

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Miguel Salazar): It’s been a hot minute since we’ve seen junior lightweight prospect Joel Diaz Jr., 11-0 (10), who takes on Victor Sanchez (who’s more dangerous than his record suggests) at the Bayou Event Center in Houston, Texas on April 4. Diaz kicked off 2012 with a “Fight of the Year” candidate against Guy Robb on “ShoBox.” Until he got off the canvas early to stop Robb in an instant classic, no one had ever heard of the 20-year-old Palmdale, CA badass when Joel Diaz Jr. Finally Descends the Mountain

Azad Championship Report - Golovkin: Overrated, Underrated, Feared and Unproven

By Thomas Hauser: Don King arrived at Barclays Center for the March 9th IBF 175-pound title fight between Bernard Hopkins and Tavoris Cloud shortly after 8:00 p.m. King will be 82 years old on August 20th, but he has the physical presence and vitality of a man half his age.
