Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Frampton and Quigg meet in a battle of champions

By John J. Raspanti: Sometimes boxing gets it right. On February 27 at Manchester Arena in Manchester, London, England, two champions in their boxing primes will meet to settle their differences. The bout between undefeated super bantamweight title-holders Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg promises to be both competitive and entertaining. Frampton has scored 14 knockouts in his 21 wins. Quigg has a slightly higher knockout percentage, having dispatched 23 opponents in 31 fights. Quigg is taller... Frampton and Quigg meet in a battle of champions

Frampton Comes Alive

By Marty Mulcahey: There will never be another Barry McGuigan, a distinctive product from the last generation of Ireland’s violent social climate that encompassed “The Troubles.” When McGuigan fought, he unified a disjointed country racked by sectarian violence and murders. The phrase “Barry fights so we don’t have to” was the common refrain. During McGuigan’s career - some 30 years ago - bombings and police raids kept Ireland in an incessant state of tightly coiled tension reflected by his Frampton Comes Alive

The Divide

By Steve Kim: The numbers are in from the conflicting cards in Las Vegas staged between Top Rank and Golden Boy. The shows at the Thomas and Mack Center and the MGM Grand each did well at the box-office (although many have raised doubts about the veracity of the figures from the promotion featuring Saul “Canelo” Alvarez) with Showtime reporting strong Nielsen numbers and HBO Pay-Per-View announcing 475,000 buys for the Sergio Martinez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight... The Pay-per-view TV Cheat Sheet- Apr. 2, 2011

By Marty Mulcahey: It takes a special pair of fighters to headline a PPV card below the bantamweight division. Ivan Calderon earned that status during the course of a seven-year title run and Giovani Segura usurped that prestige by knocking out Calderon in Puerto Rico. The last elite duo near flyweight to pull off a memorable two-bout run (at strawweight) was Ricardo Lopez and Rosendo Alvarez but neither of those fights were part The Pay-per-view TV Cheat Sheet- Apr. 2, 2011

Hudson Takes “Perro” for a Walk

Steve Kim: In May of 2009, junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo suffered his first professional loss against Kermit Cintron, who, despite being better known as a puncher, boxed and moved his way to a 12-round unanimous decision by scores of 116-112 across the board. Weekend TV Cheat Sheet

By Marty Mulcahey: It is a strangely formatted weekend for boxing fans. There are no events on Friday night, and the number of choices for Saturday make it a challenge to view all in their entirety. ESPN2 presents a special Saturday night telecast, instead of the usual Friday night, so adjust your DVR or TiVo accordingly. There are four shows in all; sadly one of them is the Holyfield – Botha PPV, but aside from the Celestino Caballero-Daud Yordan fight, they lack intrigue. Thankfully, HBO is Weekend TV Cheat Sheet

On Second Sight

Marty Mulcahey: At this time last year, Daud Yordan whet boxing fans’ appetites in his HBO debut, aggressively stalking Robert Guerrero before their bout ended in a cut-induced no-contest. On Saturday, the 22-year-old boxer/puncher can build on that promise, but faces an opponent ranked tenth in THE RING magazine’s pound-for-pound ratings for over a year. To date, Yordan has never fallen short of expectations, and Golden Boy Promotions were so enthralled by the prospect that they signed him to On Second Sight
