Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Glowacki powers his way past Cunningham

By John J. Raspanti: Cruiserweight titleholder Krzysztof Glowacki (26-0, 15 KOs) knocked down former champion Steve Cunningham (28-8,-1, 13 KOs) four times en route to winning a unanimous decision at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York Saturday night. The scores were 116-108, and 115-109 (twice). The first round was all about feeling each other out. The second was completely different. Southpaw Glowacki, 30, unleashed a powerful left hook that sent Cunningham down.... Glowacki powers his way past Cunningham

On the Move: MaxBoxing World Rankings 7-28-15

By Derek Bonnett: One of the most consistent aspects of professional boxing is erratic scoring. Not every bad scoring job yields a victory to the wrong fighter, but a controversial winner certainly gets boxing aficionados fired up to critique the work of a judge. This weekend, like so many, saw three judges in unison deliver a poor verdict to the wrong fighter, screwing over a rising prospect. It almost could have been predicted. Prior to his bout with Yuniesky Gonzalez, Jean Pascal was pretty On the Move: MaxBoxing World Rankings 7-28-15

On the Move: MaxBoxing World Rankings 3-9-15

By Derek Bonnett: For once, I am very glad to be wrong. Going into Amnat Ruenroeng’s defense of the IBF flyweight title against Zou Shiming, I did not see much hope for the champion retaining his title in Macao, China. For some time now, I have been proclaiming the Chinese boxing celebrity as "Too Big To Fail" spoofing the economic theory that some financial institutions need government bailouts to avoid crumbling and thus causing even greater repercussions to the entire system at large... Top 10 Year in Review

By Mikko Salo: The year 2014 saw the heavyweight division gather momentum on different fronts. In Europe, the main market in today`s heavyweight landscape, the Undisputed Champion Wladimir Klitschko fought a 5-round barnburner against top contender Kubrat Pulev. The entertaining HBO-televised match-up proved us once again what kind of a special era in heavyweight boxing we are all witnessing. Klitschko is one of the all-time heavyweight kings and is not about to relinquish his crown... Top 10 Year in Review

All-British grudge match: Tyson Fury versus Dereck Chisora

By John J. Raspanti: Undefeated British heavyweight contender, and big-time braggart Tyson Fury has engaged in only two fights in two years. Some are wondering if he’ll be rusty this Saturday night when he faces Dereck Chisora at the ExCel Arena in London, England. Fury, 26, had two fights with David Haye, and one with Chisora, cancelled due to injuries suffered by his opponents during training. In the ring, or outside the ropes, one aspect of Fury’s personality remains a constant, his All-British grudge match: Tyson Fury versus Dereck Chisora
Kennedy Cunningham: Little Warrior

Kennedy Cunningham: Little Warrior

By Benny Henderson Jr: “No matter what, your child is going to die far too soon.” That is a phrase that no parent should ever have to hear concerning their child. But, that is exactly what was told to the former cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham and his wife Livvy, concerning their eight year old daughter Kennedy. Steve fights his battles in the ring, their precious child Kennedy fights her battle throughout everyday life... Kennedy Cunningham: Little Warrior

Fight On! Random Thoughts from the USC

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): This past Saturday night at the Galen Center on the campus of USC, Bermane Stiverne captured the vacant WBC heavyweight title with a sixth-round stoppage of Chris Arreola in an entertaining affair, nationally televised on ESPN. Here are some random thoughts from ringside this past weekend... - No, this wasn’t George Foreman-Ron Lyle but by today’s standards, Stiverne-Arreola II was a very good heavyweight scrap. Early on... How Much Does Pacquiao Have Left?

By Steve Kim (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): Manny Pacquiao is a fighter of many punches. However, most of the time, he’s a man of few words, which is a bit of a problem when you attempt to interview him. No, it’s not that he’s unpleasant or angry with the media - he’s just the opposite in fact - but by nature, he’s a soft-spoken individual (at least with the American press) and while much is on the line this upcoming Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena How Much Does Pacquiao Have Left?

How Binding?

By Steve Kim: With much fanfare - and to the disappointment of many boxing fans - it was announced last week that the reigning light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson would be facing Andrzej Fonfara on May 24th in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as part of a deal struck with Showtime (which could eventually lead to a bout against Bernard Hopkins). Simply put, this means a fall bout between Stevenson and WBO beltholder Sergey Kovalev on HBO (which had been laying out this match-up for... How Binding?

USS Cunningham Hopes to Stay Afloat vs. Amir Mansour

By Gabriel Montoya: In his fifth fight in the heavyweight division, 37-year-old Steve “USS” Cunningham, 26-6 (12), is in a crossroads bout. Pitted against fellow Main Events stablemate USBA titlist Amir Mansour, 20-0 (15), a 41-year-old “prospect,” Cunningham is fighting for Mansour’s belt, a higher ranking and a shot at a world title. The bout will be televised live on Friday from the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the NBC Sports Network. The bout is co-promoted by Main E USS Cunningham Hopes to Stay Afloat vs. Amir Mansour

Shiming on the Fast Track?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): While Zou Shiming - who is preparing for his fourth professional outing this weekend in Macao, China - is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, he isn’t exactly Vasyl Lomachenko or Guillermo Rigondeaux when it comes to natural talent (and yes, this is the early frontrunner for “Understatement of the Year” for 2014). Yes, he had a huge amateur pedigree but his skill set isn’t in the same stratosphere as those other two, who also captured Shiming on the Fast Track?

The Human Highlight Reel

By Anson Wainwright (Photo © Golden Boy Promotions): Over the past decade or so, we’ve become accustomed to witnessing the likes of Carl Froch, Erik Morales, Brandon Rios and Company thrilling us regularly. The aforementioned trio are rarely if ever in anything other than barnburners. They’re can’t-miss-TV. It would be unfair not to mention several others who are also in thrill-a-minute bouts including Marco Huck, who for several years has shed blood to the behest of his German countrymen... The Pay-Per-View Soapbox – Aug. 8, 2013

By Steve Kim: In five weeks the most highly-anticipated pay-per-view card of 2013 takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas when Floyd Mayweather faces Saul Alvarez. What has added to the anticipation of this event is the addition of Lucas Matthysse’s battle versus Danny Garcia, a fight that could easily headline on Showtime on its own merits. Whoever was waffling on purchasing “The One,” is now probably off the fence. They will be forking over their hard earned money for this show... The Pay-Per-View Soapbox – Aug. 8, 2013

Azad Championship Report - Man in the Middle

By Steve Kim: It’s not unusual for two fighters from the same promotional entity to compete in the ring. In fact, with the state of the business nowadays, it’s the easiest way to make a fight. Most of the major firms, whether they be Golden Boy Promotions, Top Rank, Don King Productions or Main Events, have all made a multitude of in-house match-ups pitting their clients against each other. Quillin Gets to Work, Wants to Unify

By Steve Kim (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): Like everyone else originally scheduled to go on February 9th at the Barclays Center, WBO middleweight titlist Peter Quillin saw his 2013 debut versus Fernando Guerrero delayed when headliner Danny Garcia suffered a rib injury and was forced to postpone his defense of his junior welterweight belts versus Zab Judah. Quickly, this Showtime card was rescheduled to this weekend. With that, Quillin, who had already spent nearly two months in Los Angeles.. Quillin Gets to Work, Wants to Unify

Remember the Alamo(dome)

By Steve Kim (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): I’ll say this right now, if I lived in San Antonio I’d be 30 pounds heavier. Because while Tex-Mex cuisine is to be found everywhere, locating an LA Fitness or 24 Hour Fitness is harder to find than someone wearing a Derek Fisher jersey in this city. Seriously, I was there from late Wednesday afternoon to Sunday and I literally didn’t see one workout facility during my stay there. I spent plenty of time at the famed Riverwalk and Remember the Alamo(dome)

A Blessing in Disguise for Cunningham

By Steve Kim: On the afternoon of December 22nd, in the eyes of most observers, it seemed as though Steve Cunningham had done more than enough to exact revenge on Tomasz Adamek in their second go-round. Back when they first met up as cruiserweights in December of 2008, “U.S.S.” was sunk to the canvas thrice in losing his IBF title via split decision. This time around as heavyweights at the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Cunningham, boxed smartly and stayed out harm’s... A Blessing in Disguise for Cunningham

Azad Championship Report: Ponce de Leon vs. Mares: Signed, Sealed and Delivered

By Steve Kim: After what has been a slow start to the 2013 boxing schedule, beset by injuries and postponements, it seems to be picking up steam going into the spring. And Golden Boy Promotions is doing more than its part to add to this momentum with what could be the most fan-friendly doubleheader of the year on April 20th. Azad Championship Report: A New World?

By Steve Kim: On May 4th from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather will make his next appearance in the ring against Robert Guerrero. This was pretty well known for the last month or so. What wasn’t so clear was which network (HBO or Showtime) would be the one distributing this event on pay-per-view. This was no small issue to these cable giants given Mayweather is the sport’s biggest pay-per-view draw and worth multimillions of dollars.
