Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Could legs be the difference for Alvarez and Cotto on November 21?

By John J. Raspanti: There’s an old way of thinking that women weaken legs. No less an authority than Mickey Goldmill, the grouchy trainer of Rocky Balboa, espoused this thinking 38 years ago in the classic film Rocky. Surprisingly, Goldmill is not alone. Freddie Roach, whose fighter, Miguel Cotto, meets former champion Canelo Alvarez on November 21 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, NV., basically agrees women can be a distraction... Were you not Entertained?

By Allan Scotto (Photo © Esther Lin / SHOWTIME): And so, the fight everyone wanted to see is in the books. This past Saturday, May 2nd, 2015, is a date that many people will remember for a very long time. It was the day that the hyped up, “fight of the century” took place! Well, it certainly wasn’t that, but it was a must see sporting event. Fight night parties were held worldwide and if you were fortunate enough to get in the arena, it was the place to be seen. It’s been a long time since “A Were you not Entertained?

Mosley on why JMM's KO of Pac hurts

"Sugar" Shane Mosley has faced off against both Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mosley certainly has a unique perspective on both fighters. Algieri is convinced he can defeat Pacquiao, but will he?

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Put your future in good hands — your own. ~ Author Unknown. Chris Algieri’s brimming confidence appears to be getting under the skin of Manny Pacquaio’s trainer, Freddie Roach. "Chris is so cocky, I’m tired of him," Roach told the Inquirer.net several days ago. Pacquiao, who meets Algieri this Saturday in Macao, China, seems more amused than bothered by the upstart New Yorker... Algieri is convinced he can defeat Pacquiao, but will he?

Johnny Gant and The Atlanta Art of Boxing Center

By Jason Gonzalez: Boxing gyms are typically a staple in most urban areas, regardless if there is, or isn’t a boxing culture per say relevant to its specific location. But as the old boxing axiom goes, “boxing saves lives”. Albeit, redirecting misguided teens, teaching the art of self-defense, while remaining true to the core principles of helping individuals to reach maximum physical fitness, as well as mental wellness. Without question, boxing gyms are a vital component for every ecosystem... Johnny Gant and The Atlanta Art of Boxing Center

Pacquiao Continues Pay Per View Nonsense

By Matthew Hurley: Now that Manny Pacquiao versus Chris Algieri is a done deal, the PacMan officially revealed himself to be Bob Arum’s puppet on a string. No, this is not as bad as Colonel Tom Parker ripping apart his only client Elvis Presley over nearly twenty-one years but it begs the question, who would Manny be fighting on November 22 had he not signed a contract extension through 2016? Certainly not Algieri... Pacquiao Continues Pay Per View Nonsense

Does the Fathers Involvement with their Boxing Sons Ever Work?

By Ken Hissnr: We’ve seen it so many times how a father in the corner or managing a son turns out bad! Floyd Mayweather, Jr., and his father have had their ups and downs as has Shane Mosley and his father. Today there are three relationships that stand out for me. One is the one between Buddy Harrison and his 19 year-old son Dusty Hernandez-Harrison, 22-0 (12), out of Washington, DC. He turned professional at 16 after 200 amateur fights and many titles... Head-to-Head: Martinez vs. Cotto

By Coyote Duran and Gabriel Montoya: As far as overused adages in boxing go, “crossroads fight” has to be at or near the top of the list. But I’ll be damned if it doesn’t fit the bill here – even if the fight in question involves two hardened ring veterans six years apart from one another in age. How we got to this point tonight is certainly another issue you can debate to death or until your vocal cords give out. I don’t care. Knock yourself out. This is as bitchen as fights get and as far as Head-to-Head: Martinez vs. Cotto

The Latin Snake States His Case

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): When Sergio Mora faces Samuel Rogers this Saturday night from the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, he won’t even be on the HBO Latino broadcast (which features Javier Fortuna and Orlando Del Valle in separate bouts) but he doesn’t take this as a slight. “It didn’t upset me because I’m already getting used to the bitterness,” he said with a smile this past Wednesday at the Gamboa Boxing Gym in Whittier, CA. “So it’s either... Do We Plead for a Fifth?

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): It was a successful Forum homecoming for future Hall-of-Famer Juan Manuel Marquez as he defeated the rugged Mike Alvarado in front of 12,090 mostly Mexican partisans who cheered his every move. He’s come a long way from being third banana to the likes of countrymen Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera and being branded as just a safe, cautious counterpuncher. Alvarado was game but simply outgunned by the master from Mexico City, who was... Do We Plead for a Fifth?

Mikey Garcia vs. Top Rank

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): It turns out that the big fight for WBO super featherweight titlist Mikey Garcia in 2014 will not be against Yuriorkis Gamboa but against his own promoter, Top Rank Promotions, who he recently filed suit against in a story broken by BadCulture.net. Old Games, New Schemes, Same Difference

By Gabriel Montoya: Growing up, I didn’t care about the business of boxing. Fights got made or they didn’t. More often than not, they got made as far as I was concerned. I think I went from childhood to teenage fan, only upset that 1) Aaron Pryor and Sugar Ray Leonard didn’t fight each other; 2) Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield weren’t fully in their primes when they fought and 3a) Leonard and Marvelous Marvin Hagler fought too late and 3b) only once. By Bill Tibbs: “Vicious” Victor Ortiz will return to his day job on January 30th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York after a long break - no pun intended. Ortiz is returning after a broken jaw that saw him leave the ring for what is now nearly two years. Bute-Pascal and the (Possible) Future of Drug Testing in Boxing

By Gabriel Montoya: Writer’s note: This article is going to be a little unorthodox. Then again, when it comes to the subject of anti-doping in boxing and my place within that issue, everything has become more than a little unorthodox. It is my wish to give you, the reader, as full a disclosure about my involvement in the development of the anti-doping testing protocol used by GYM-Interbox as possible. Pay-Per-View Worthy?

By Steve Kim: Last week, Golden Boy Promotions announced that on March 8th from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Saul Alvarez will return to the ring (following his defeat at the hands of Floyd Mayweather last September) against Alfredo Angulo. Rounding out that show could be the trio of Leo Santa Cruz, Omar Figueroa and Jorge Linares. They are calling this promotion “Toe-to-Toe” and it figures to be a fun night of action. What Goes Around Comes Around (for Everybody)

By Steve Kim (Graphic by Chee): Well, we found out why Robert Guerrero had suddenly disappeared - y’ know, like a Ghost - in the wake of his lopsided loss to Floyd Mayweather in May. It turns out that he was plotting his escape from Golden Boy Promotions, which had given him the fight he so badly yearned for (while blowing up the inboxes of every boxing scribe in the world with an incessant stream of press releases long before the actual fight). 2014 Boxing Resolutions

By Steve Kim: It never fails; does it? The first month or so into the New Year, you see people you’ve never seen working out at the gym. They are the ones who make New Year’s resolutions to start working out and get back into shape and as soon as January 2nd rolls around, they become Jack Lalanne all of a sudden. Marcos Maidana Proves To Be A Big Problem For Broner

By Jason Pribila (Photo © Tom Casino/SHOWTIME): The last major fight card of 2013 took place on Saturday night in San Antonio, TX. A Testy Issue and Other Boxing Thoughts

By Gabriel Montoya: A Testy Issue...The random anti-doping testing issue makes some boxing people touchy but it seems like some fighters, following the example set by Floyd Mayweather Jr. over three years ago, definitely want it. Danny Garcia wanted it for Lucas Matthysse. Timothy Bradley has gotten it twice now in a row. He’ll keep doing it; I’ll bet. Freddie Roach wanted it for Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios. Ruslan Provodnikov has been doing it voluntarily two fights in a row A Testy Issue and Other Boxing Thoughts

Thanks?

By Coyote Duran: Once upon a time (actually back in 2001), I had this Palm Pilot (“…the Hell is that?” you ask. Trust me; personal digital assistants were all the rage for about five minutes) that I really did nothing but play games on. Before I accidentally sat on and crushed it, I was hooked on a card trick game that challenged one to mentally pick one card out of four, then hit a button to reshuffle the cards. The computer then “guessed” which card you mentally catalogued by omitting it from Thanks?
