Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Garcia vs. Broner next? Lee-Quillin split draw, rematch?

By Jason Gonzalez: Brooklyn, NY - The highly anticipated matchup between unified junior welterweight champion (WBA/WBC) Danny “Swift” Garcia, 30-0, (17) and IBF title holder Lamont Peterson, 33-3-1, (17) should have been a fight that saw one undisputed champion. It should have been a scrap in which the victor would have claimed supremacy at 140 pounds. But instead fight fans alike had to settle for a non-title bout that was fought at a catch weight of 143 pounds... Garcia vs. Broner next? Lee-Quillin split draw, rematch?

Showtime at StubHub

By Steve Kim: This Saturday night, Showtime gets back into the business of broadcasting boxing from the StubHub Center in Carson, California, a noted fight venue where fistic magic seems to happen consistently. There seems to be a certain mystique to this place and fights break out on a regular basis (in and out of the ring). This structure is really a tennis stadium but the most notable volleys have come from pugilists. This upcoming weekend there is a tripleheader... Showtime at StubHub

Do We Plead for a Fifth?

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): It was a successful Forum homecoming for future Hall-of-Famer Juan Manuel Marquez as he defeated the rugged Mike Alvarado in front of 12,090 mostly Mexican partisans who cheered his every move. He’s come a long way from being third banana to the likes of countrymen Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera and being branded as just a safe, cautious counterpuncher. Alvarado was game but simply outgunned by the master from Mexico City, who was... Do We Plead for a Fifth?

What Goes Around Comes Around (for Everybody)

By Steve Kim (Graphic by Chee): Well, we found out why Robert Guerrero had suddenly disappeared - y’ know, like a Ghost - in the wake of his lopsided loss to Floyd Mayweather in May. It turns out that he was plotting his escape from Golden Boy Promotions, which had given him the fight he so badly yearned for (while blowing up the inboxes of every boxing scribe in the world with an incessant stream of press releases long before the actual fight). What was whispered about in the background of the What Goes Around Comes Around (for Everybody)

Fight Night Provides Springboard

By Steve Kim: This Saturday night from the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, the latest installment of the “Fight Night” series on the NBC Sports Network (10:30 p.m., ET) takes place. It’s a tripleheader featuring middleweight Curtis Stevens, cruiserweight Eddie Chambers and heavyweight Tomasz Adamek. This series, which began in January of 2012, has provided two things on a consistent basis: solid entertainment and a springboard for boxers to go and perform on bigger (and more lucrative) Fight Night Provides Springboard

Soto Karass Meets Berto (Again)

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): On the night of June 8th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California a rather uneventful (to say the least) fight was taking place inside the ring between junior middleweights Jermell Charlo and Demetrius Hopkins. The boo-birds came out early for this one and it wasn’t difficult for the crowd’s attention to be diverted to the crossing of paths between Jesus Soto Karass and Andre Berto in the lower bowl of the tennis stadium. Azad Championship Report - Mayweather vs. Guerrero – May Day or Ghost Sighting?

By Marc Livitz: Cinco de Mayo weekend is fast approaching and that usually means what it has meant in years past. Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr., who can now truly be the one who sits alone well atop the mythical yet at times nonsensical “Pound for Pound” rankings will be the center stage in Las Vegas. The undisputed king of the boxing box office holds an undefeated record of 43 wins (26 KO’s) and no losses. Forty two have tried and failed. One has tried twice and failed twice... Golden Boy Puts Up

By Steve Kim: There has been a lot of public posturing between Top Rank and Golden Boy in recent weeks and months regarding a potential match-up between Nonito Donaire and Abner Mares. The two companies have engaged in a long-running “Cold War,” resulting in them basically running their own boxing leagues separate from each other thus not co-promoting an event in years. Because of this, fights such as Donaire vs. Mares (among many others) are non-starters. Bob Arum made it clear he was willing Golden Boy Puts Up

Matthysse ices Dallas, Jr in one with a single punch

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): Junior welterweight sensation Lucas Matthysse improved to 33-2 with 31 knockouts by taking out Mike Dallas, Jr, 19-3-1, 8 knockouts, with a single right hand that had him out cold before he hit the canvas. The time was 2:26 of the first round. Dallas appeared nervous and a bit tight in the early portion of the round, moving and mapping out his territory using his speed. Matthysse stayed relentless as usual working his way in and looking to drop Matthysse ices Dallas, Jr in one with a single punch

The Showtime Championship Boxing TV Cheat Sheet – Jan. 26, 2013

By Marty Mulcahey (Photo © Craig Bennett / SHOWTIME): Tonight’s Showtime card is about excitement and how that word possesses redemptive qualities with fighters. Headliner Lucas Matthysse is proof that a boxer who takes a chance fighting the best but loses courageously will be asked to return and can go on to become a regular television attraction. The Argentine’s two career losses were by split decision on HBO and Showtime but he fought with skill (knocking down both opponents) and, more The Showtime Championship Boxing TV Cheat Sheet – Jan. 26, 2013

A Must-Win for Soto Karass?

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): There really is no such thing as a “must-win” in boxing. Unlike other sports, where there are real standings and playoffs, boxing is really about how popular you are and what you can get in terms of opportunities within the marketplace. If you have a fan-base, you can drop a fight or two and not really suffer a drop in marketability and lucrative opportunities still await you. As for your career being dependent on continuing your career, well, as A Must-Win for Soto Karass?

Golden Schedule

By Steve Kim: Last year, Golden Boy Promotions was as busy as any promoter in the world. It wasn’t unusual for them to have a card featured on HBO or Showtime and promotions televised on Telefutura and Fox Sports/Deportes. Things don’t figure to slow down all that much in 2013 and Golden Boy has recently announced plans to get a promoter’s license in the United Kingdom. Matter of fact, they inked British bronze medalist Anthony Ogogo to a deal. They have a full slate set for the Golden Schedule

The First Quarter

By Steve Kim: There is a big multi-title fight card in Japan taking place today but for the most part, we can turn the page on 2012 and look ahead to the New Year. And the early schedule for the networks has been formulated. Here’s a look ahead to what we have in store for the first quarter of 2013... The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One

By Steve Kim: Another year has come and passed and it was another 12-month period where we didn’t see Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather square off. And guess what? It was actually still a very eventful and entertaining year for the sport of boxing, regardless. Better yet, it wasn’t completely overtaken by the MMA! (OK, I’m being facetious there.) But seriously, 2012 was a good one for the sport of boxing and its followers. Here’s a look back at what took place this The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One

Molina’s Raging Water

By Steve Kim: There has been a constant companion alongside Carlos Molina in the lead-up to his bout versus Amir Khan this Saturday night at the L.A. Sports Arena (Showtime, 10:30 p.m., ET/PT). He takes it everywhere he goes. To the gym, to the dinner table, when he runs errands around town or when he’s on the sofa watching television. He even goes to bed with it. Azad Championship Report: Robert Guerrero: “It’s about skills”

By Gabriel Montoya: There are few fighters in search of respect more than four-time titleholder Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, 30-1-1 (18). You would think in this day and age (where the more belts collected, the more divisions you jump), respect as one of the top fighters in the world would be his. Still, it remains elusive. While he has held four titles, he has yet to wrest one from a big-name champion. Instead, Guerrero has fought for interim belts once the “regular” titlists abandon their Azad Championship Report: Robert Guerrero: “It’s about skills”

Andre Berto: Lessons Learned the Hard Way

By Gabriel Montoya: For the past year-and-a-half, former two-time welterweight champion Andre Berto’s life has been the exact opposite of his laidback demeanor. The trouble started in April of 2011 against Victor Ortiz, a junior welterweight with a shaky chin Berto thought he’d blast out of there. It didn’t happen. Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero: “It’s time to take care of business.”

Gabriel Montoya: From featherweight to welterweight, Gilroy, CA native Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero has been chasing the big fight. For a man who draws well in nearby San Jose, CA with a fan-friendly style and a willingness to fight the absolute best given the chance, the career-defining fight has historically eluded Guerrero. The Divide

By Steve Kim: The numbers are in from the conflicting cards in Las Vegas staged between Top Rank and Golden Boy. The shows at the Thomas and Mack Center and the MGM Grand each did well at the box-office (although many have raised doubts about the veracity of the figures from the promotion featuring Saul “Canelo” Alvarez) with Showtime reporting strong Nielsen numbers and HBO Pay-Per-View announcing 475,000 buys for the Sergio Martinez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight...
