Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

The Showtime Championship Boxing TV Cheat Sheet – Jan. 26, 2013

By Marty Mulcahey (Photo © Craig Bennett / SHOWTIME): Tonight’s Showtime card is about excitement and how that word possesses redemptive qualities with fighters. Headliner Lucas Matthysse is proof that a boxer who takes a chance fighting the best but loses courageously will be asked to return and can go on to become a regular television attraction. The Argentine’s two career losses were by split decision on HBO and Showtime but he fought with skill (knocking down both opponents) and, more The Showtime Championship Boxing TV Cheat Sheet – Jan. 26, 2013

The Same Ol' Yonnhy Perez

By Steve Kim (Photo © Howard Schatz): In what is a reprisal of an action-packed affair from last year, Yonnhy Perez faces Joseph Agbeko from the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington in the first round of Showtime’s four-man single-elimination bantamweight tournament. Perez had quite the Halloween in 2009 as he lifted the IBF bantamweight crown from Agbeko in Las Vegas by the scores of 117-110 twice and 116-111. Back then, the native of Colombia... The Thursday/Friday TV Cheat Sheet

By Marty Mulcahey: The weekend boxing action gets off to an early start tonight; with FOX Sports airing the club-level fights emanating from L.A’s Nokia Theater-turned-nightclub. The shows have evolved from bad mismatches to C-level “ShoBox” events, where a young prospect is matched with a beatable trial horse with one hazardous asset that has to be navigated. On Friday night, I have conflicting feelings about Telefutura card... The Thursday/Friday TV Cheat Sheet

Montoya’s Monday Mailbag

Greetings from Vegas, fight fans. From Fernando Montiel’s amazing out of nowhere knockout of Hozumi Hasegawa to the one round, three knockdowns, and a TKO in a pear tree that was the Saldivia-Quali fight to the masterwork that was Floyd Joy Mayweather, Jr’s dismantling of Sugar Shane Mosley, what a great weekend of great fights. Mayweather Paints a Picasso

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): For a brief spell, Shane Mosley had the crowd on its feet and buzzing; he had just hit Floyd Mayweather with a blistering right hand in the second round that had shook the native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Saturday night. It was stunning to see Mayweather hurt to any degree, much less hit with a clean, hard punch. An emboldened Mosley followed up with a barrage of punches before Mayweather rallied back with Mayweather Paints a Picasso

Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): A star-studded crowd gathered in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena to witness the welterweight showdown between superstar master boxer Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr., 41-0 (25), and “Sugar” Shane Mosley, 46-6 (39) with one no-contest. The Weekend TV Cheat Sheet's Big PPV Preview

Marty Mulcahey: Do you remember the feeling you got when the two toughest guys in high school would meet after class to fight? The Mayweather – Mosley fight is that on a global scale, admittedly with more skills and a bigger circle of spectators. Sadly, it seems to have become a new mega-fight tradition that the supporting bouts be less-than-spectacular. However, I do applaud the promotion for loading the undercard with power punchers. I said that? My 2009 Preview Review - Part II

Martin Mulcahey: In part one of my annual preview-review I lamented that readers who visit multiple boxing websites are sure to notice how easy it is for journalists to make predictions. They are certain in the knowledge that few will remember what they wrote in a year’s time. But I feel that writing for Maxboxing is to be held to a higher standard. With those thoughts in mind, every year I venture back in time and review my predictions for the previous year. I, again, encourage readers to take I said that? My 2009 Preview Review - Part II
