Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Alvarez-Trout: Shades of the past, a window to the future

By Gabriel Montoya: Saturday night’s WBA/WBC junior middleweight unification bout between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Austin “No Doubt” Trout to be held before a sold out crowd of 38,000 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas is being compared the “super fight” between Julio Cesar Chavez and Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker held at the same locale nearly 20 years ago. From a fighting style standpoint, that comparison would be incorrect. In terms of how important the win... Alvarez-Trout: Shades of the past, a window to the future

Azad Championship Report: No Sprinkling of Cinnamon on May 4th

By Steve Kim: The big news last week was that WBC junior middleweight titlist Saul “Canelo” Alvarez would be facing WBA beltholder Austin Trout in one of the more intriguing and anticipated bouts of 2013. But in a new change of plans, it would not be taking place May 4th on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather’s bout against Robert Guerrero at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Instead, Alvarez made the decision to go fishing on April 20th... Azad Championship Report: No Sprinkling of Cinnamon on May 4th

Azad Championship Report - Saul Alvarez: “I will fight whoever is ready”

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Gene Blevins - Hoganphotos/ Golden Boy Promotions): It’s really very simple. The oldest story in our game. Young Mexican lion vs. Old black lion that has never lost to a Mexican. Live on HBO PPV. You’ll hear the familiar refrain all night “Mosley has never been stopped and never lost to a Mexican. Will both of those things happen tonight?” If you listen... Azad Championship Report - Saul Alvarez: “I will fight whoever is ready”

By Steve Kim: There is a train of thought in college football that in the 2011 season, there is Alabama and LSU and then everybody else. “Canelo” Alvarez and Alfonso Gomez Square off in L.A.

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Hoganphotos, Golden Boy Promotions): If you can say one thing about WBC junior middleweight titleholder Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, he’s active for a titleholder. Most titleholders who fight on premium cable networks these days fight once or twice a year. However, Alvarez is a unique fighter in that his popularity and status as a titleholder is a bit ahead of his skills as a fighter. At just 21... “Canelo” Alvarez and Alfonso Gomez Square off in L.A.

Too Much of a Good Thing?

By Steve Kim (Photo © TomHogan - Hoganphotos, Golden Boy Promotions): Last week, I detailed what is a strong upcoming schedule for boxing for the rest of 2011. What has already been a pretty good year for the sport only figures to get better in the next several months. You have fights that appeal to the hardcore followers of the sport (like the bout this weekend on Showtime between WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios and Urbano Antillon and the August 27th battle between Marcos Maidana and R Too Much of a Good Thing?

A Dormant Storm Cloud

By Steve Kim: There was a time early in his career when IBF light heavyweight titlist Tavoris Cloud was among the most active fighters in the sport. But as he moved up the rankings and went through a litany of changes to his management and promotional situations, Cloud got bogged down and became a part-time prizefighter. Since August of 2009, when he captured the vacant title by besting Clinton Woods, he has engaged... A Dormant Storm Cloud

Alvarez shuts out then stops Rhodes

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Ed Mulholland, HBO): Saul “Canelo” Alvarez made an impressive, if unexciting, first defense of his junior middleweight title Saturday night, stopping Ryan Rhodes in the twelfth round in an HBO-televised fight live from Guadalajara, Mexico. The action started off slowly in the first as both men looked to establish the jab. Alvarez worked a few punches to the body early on and Rhodes got in a... Alvarez shuts out then stops Rhodes

The Incredibly Convoluted Tale of Alfredo Angulo and His Lost Year: Part Two

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): In Part One, we learned: On August 11, 2011, junior middleweight Alfredo “Perro” Angulo will be 29 years old and will have been out of the ring for a little over a year, expelled to his own country due to a visa that expired for one of two reasons. HBO Boxing After Dark TV Cheat Sheet- June 17, 2011

By Marty Mulcahey: I am in love with the idea of Saul Alvarez, a charismatic, young “champion” who has engaged in 37 professional fights before his 21st birthday. I remain uncertain as to whether “Canelo” is the next great Mexican fighter. Are we witnessing the emergence of the next Marco Antonio Barrera or the rise before the fall of a Luis Ramon “Yori Boy” Campas? Television networks adore Alvarez because... Alvarez and Chavez Jr. are Great...for Boxing

By Steve Kim (Photo © Carlos Delgado, HoganPhotos): This Saturday night in Guadalajara, Mexico, Saul Alvarez defends his WBC junior middleweight title against Ryan Rhodes, just a couple of weeks after Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. captured the WBC middleweight title against Sebastian Zbik at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. You hear the usual moaning and groaning from the purists about “paper titles” and the term “fraud” being thrown around... Alvarez and Chavez Jr. are Great...for Boxing

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez Prepares to Begin His Title Reign

By Gabriel Montoya: Whomever said “Boxing is dead” in the past decade or so had better get a look at WBC middleweight and junior middleweight titleholders Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. The 25 and 20-year-old fighters, respectively, hail from Mexico with large loyal followers, raw skills, talent, and the backing of the top two North American promoters in Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions. Anonymous Austin

By Steve Kim: You probably didn’t know that Austin Trout- best known for serving as a sparring partner for the likes of Antonio Margarito and Sergio Martinez in recent years- holds a version of the WBA junior middleweight title. If that’s the case, it’s also likely that you didn’t realize Trout makes the first defense of his title this Saturday night in San Luis Potosi, Mexico versus David Lopez. A Golden Weekend

By Steve Kim: It was quite the weekend for Golden Boy Promotions. Amir Khan retained his WBA junior welterweight title in Manchester, England with a six-round technical decision over Paul McCloskey. Garcia Returns

By Steve Kim: The last we saw of junior middleweight Robert Garcia, he was in Aguascalientes, Mexico where he was facing the exiled Antonio Margarito. For Garcia, this was a chance of a lifetime but instead of capitalizing on it, he squandered it away with what basically amounted to a non-performance. Instead of fighting like hell, he barely fought at all... Garcia Returns
