Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

The nine lives of Arthur Abraham

By John J. Raspanti: In a span of 14 months, Arthur Abraham lost three out of four fights. What made the losses so troubling was the fact that Abraham was barely competitive in the matches. Five years ago at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit Michigan, Andre Dirrell was leading comfortably against Abraham when he slipped to the canvas in round 11. In a desperate move, Abraham felled Dirrell with an illegal blow--drawing an immediate disqualification. Eleven months after his defeat, Carl Froch... The nine lives of Arthur Abraham

Down goes Price

By John J. Raspanti: After the fall, the six-foot, eight-inch giant stood in his corner with a dazed expression on his face, tears rolling down his cheeks. David Price had been knocked out in a professional boxing match for the third time in two years. His plunge had been swift and dramatic. Only three years ago, Price, of Liverpool, ENG. appeared to be on his way to a shot at the heavyweight championship of the world. ESPN had named him prospect of the year. His amateur background... On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings Nov-11-14

By Derek Bonnett: Bernard Hopkins lost and he lost badly. However, losing badly two months shy of fifty years of age is still pretty good. Especially when the lopsided unanimous decision scores came against, the new SecondsOut number one rated light heavyweight in the world, Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev, who is not exactly used to hearing the judges final tallies in his fights. I expected Kovalev to finish Bernard to the body, but the end result confirmed two things. I was right about the victor On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings Nov-11-14

Sturm Fully Prepared For Stieglitz

By William Wade: Just a few days before taking on fellow German Robert Stieglitz at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart, Germany on Saturday Felix ‘The Fighter’ Sturm took some time out to answer a few questions from MaxBoxing. When asked how preparations for this weekend’s fight in Stuttgart had gone, he replied that the training camp had been perfect, adding, “I hired Magomed Schaburow as my new coach and he has shown me new things each and... On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings

By Derek Bonnett: After looking forward to this week’s Showtime triple header at UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois, USA (a card I considered flying out to from Connecticut to attend), I was left with both feelings of disappointment and great relief. Disappointed that the favored fighters failed to put forth division shaping performances, but relieved I did not spring the few hundred dollars it would have likely cost me to book a flight and hotel. Both Andrezj Fonfara and Tomoki Kameda put forth On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings

Make-up Call?

By Steve Kim: Despite Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley squaring off back in June of 2012, in the end, they weren’t the two most talked-about individuals involved. That distinction went to Duane Ford and CJ Ross. The two ringside judges were in the vast minority by scoring the fight for the “Desert Storm” in what was considered the 874th black eye for boxing and about the 43rd time the sport died. Alas... Crawford Hits the Road

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): After having his last three bouts broadcast beneath the bright lights of HBO, lightweight contender Terence Crawford, sees himself in Glasgow, Scotland in his first attempt at a world title against WBO beltholder Ricky Burns at the Scottish Exhibition Centre. But this isn’t the first time Crawford has had to break out his passport to box. He recalls going to Venezuela as an amateur and according to Crawford, his trip overseas... Crawford Hits the Road

Azad Championship Report - Rematch for a Rematch?

By Steve Kim: This Saturday at the O2 Arena in London, England, a highly anticipated rematch takes place in the super middleweight division between Mikkel Kessler and Carl Froch (HBO, 6 p.m., ET/3 p.m. PT and 10 p.m., ET). The first time they met was back on April 24th, 2010 in Hernig, Denmark, where Kessler won a hard-fought, exciting unanimous decision in one of the better fights of Showtime’s “Super Six” series. Azad Championship Report - Big underdog Stieglitz stops Abraham in four

By John J. Raspanti: Robert Stieglitz regained the WBO super middleweight title by stopping defending champion Arthur Abraham after three rounds at a sold-out GTEC Arena in Magdeburg, Germany. The fight was telecast live on EPIX Sports. Stieglitz had said for months that Abraham, who defeated him by unanimous decision last August, was only borrowing the WBO belt. Most pundits favored Abraham. Stieglitz (45-3, 24 KOs) was in control from the opening bell. He backed the defending... Azad Championship Report - Big underdog Stieglitz stops Abraham in four

Azad Championship Report - Rios Rematches Alvarado

By Steve Kim: When Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado first climbed into the ring together on the night of October 13th, 2012, they did something thought to be highly improbable. Over the course of seven heated rounds, the back-and-forth battle exceeded ridiculously high expectations. In an era when fans are conditioned to be guarded and prepared to be let down, this fight delivered - and then some. It’s one of those clashes that will be discussed for years to come. There were no titles... Azad Championship Report - Rios Rematches Alvarado

De la Hoya’s Back…Joel, that Is

By Steve Kim: For many years, you saw him in the corner of one Oscar De la Hoya. A good part of his adult life was spent not only working De la Hoya’s fights but coordinating his training camps. Aiding the career of the “Golden Boy” was a vital part of his responsibilities. Many figures - from trainers, advisers, managers and promoters - came through Oscar’s career but this guy was the one constant. He probably knew De la Hoya better than any person on the planet. Azad Championship Report: Geale Ventures into the Eye of the Sturm

By Marty Mulcahey: When I lived in Key West, Florida, every time a hurricane approached, the Navy launched a plane that flew into the center of the storm to measure its strength. That is what Daniel Geale does tomorrow, facing off against Felix Sturm in an IBF and WBA title unification bout. Those are a rarity in today’s game and as such, is notable even if it does not take place on American soil or television. The titles are of little significance in the big scheme of things... Azad Championship Report: "King Arthur"dethrones Stieglitz in Berlin, Dirks and Culcay victorious

By Danny Winterbottom (Photo © SE Wende): Without a significant win at super middleweight since he vanquished Jermain Taylor in his opening bout of the Super Six tournament back in 2009, promoters Sauerland Event had billed Arthur Abraham’s WBO title challenge to Russian born champion Robert Stieglitz as “The Last Chance”.
