Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Thurman and Porter battle for bragging rights

By John J. Raspanti: They’re young, talented and champions. On June 25th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman and former champion Shawn Porter are set to let their fists prove who is the better fighter. Thurman, 27, is undefeated in 26 fights, scoring 22 knockouts. He was last seen in the ring 11 months ago notching a difficult win over Luis Collazo. Many remember not the fight itself but the vicious body blow that Thurman survived. Porter, 28, Thurman and Porter battle for bragging rights

Garcia defeats Guerrero to win WBC title

By John J. Raspanti: Former junior welterweight titleholder Danny Garcia added the WBC welterweight championship to his resume by winning a hard-fought 12 round unanimous decision over former two-division champion Robert Guerrero at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA. Saturday night. All three judges scored the fight 116-112 for Garcia. Maxboxing and Doghouseboxing also had Garcia winning by a 116-112 tallly. Guerrero, a southpaw, came out strongly in the opening stanza. He worked the body Garcia defeats Guerrero to win WBC title

Does Robert Guerrero have enough left in the tank to defeat Danny Garcia?

By John J. Raspanti Former two-division world champion Robert Guerrero is 32, considered young in just about every profession, except boxing. Two years ago, he fought the then pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas, NV. The judges had Guerrero losing nine out of twelve rounds. The roughly three million dollars Guerrero pocketed likely helped to heal his wounds. Thirteen months later, Guerrero tangled with Yoshihiro Kamegai at the Stubhub Center in Carson, Calif. Guerrero was... Does Robert Guerrero have enough left in the tank to defeat Danny Garcia?

On the Move: MaxBoxing World Rankings 7-28-15

By Derek Bonnett: One of the most consistent aspects of professional boxing is erratic scoring. Not every bad scoring job yields a victory to the wrong fighter, but a controversial winner certainly gets boxing aficionados fired up to critique the work of a judge. This weekend, like so many, saw three judges in unison deliver a poor verdict to the wrong fighter, screwing over a rising prospect. It almost could have been predicted. A Look At Boxing’s Return To Free TV

By Jason Pribila (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): Premier Boxing Champions brought their brand to network television on Saturday Night, live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. This marked the first time that boxing aired in primetime on NBC since Larry Holmes defended his heavyweight title against Carl “The Truth” Williams. Manager, Al Haymon, is investing his own money to showcase his fighters in front of the largest possible audience. He bought the time on NBC with hopes that the series.. Thurman and Guerrero save PBC from being average

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): In a sense, I hate my headline. When Al Hayman announced the debut of a series of high-profile fights on national television, I was thrilled. Boxing and TV have had a relationship with each other for over sixty years. On September 23, 1952, the Gillette Safety Razor Company presented the Rocky Marciano vs. Jersey Joe Walcott on NBC. Sugar Ray Robinson, Archie Moore, Willie Pep, and Rocky Graziano all appeared on Gillette’s F Thurman and Guerrero save PBC from being average

On the Move: MaxBoxing World Rankings 3-9-15

By Derek Bonnett: For once, I am very glad to be wrong. Going into Amnat Ruenroeng’s defense of the IBF flyweight title against Zou Shiming, I did not see much hope for the champion retaining his title in Macao, China. For some time now, I have been proclaiming the Chinese boxing celebrity as "Too Big To Fail" spoofing the economic theory that some financial institutions need government bailouts to avoid crumbling and thus causing even greater repercussions to the entire system at large... Thurman beats Guerrero in exciting 12 round slugfest

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): In easily the biggest fight of his young career, Keith Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) used a combination of speed and procession to score a hard-fought unanimous decision over Robert Guerrero (32-3-1, 18 KOs) Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The scores were 120-107 and 118-109 (twice). Maxboxing and Doghouseboxing had Thurman winning 117-110. Thurman set the pace in the opening stanza... PITTSBURGH, PA. Back at the Office

By Steve Kim: The last several months have seen something that perhaps had never happened during the past decade at Golden Boy Promotions - Oscar De la Hoya dutifully coming to its offices in downtown L.A. and putting in an honest day’s work. Showtime at StubHub

By Steve Kim: This Saturday night, Showtime gets back into the business of broadcasting boxing from the StubHub Center in Carson, California, a noted fight venue where fistic magic seems to happen consistently. There seems to be a certain mystique to this place and fights break out on a regular basis (in and out of the ring). Against the Odds

By Steve Kim (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): If you haven’t heard, Marcos Maidana, who faces Floyd Mayweather this Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, is a heavy underdog. Some books have “Money” as high as a 14-1 favorite. Is that reflective of Mayweather’s superlative skills of Mayweather or Maidana’s limitations? And is this number from the oddsmakers - who, again, are the real experts... Against the Odds

What Will Become The Moment?

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): On Saturday, Floyd Mayweather Jr., the top star in boxing, will once again return to the ring and screens across the world. In movie theaters, bars and on closed-circuit televisions, “Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana: The Moment” is upon us. But what is it? Mikey Garcia vs. Top Rank

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): It turns out that the big fight for WBO super featherweight titlist Mikey Garcia in 2014 will not be against Yuriorkis Gamboa but against his own promoter, Top Rank Promotions, who he recently filed suit against in a story broken by BadCulture.net. The American Stream

By Steve Kim (Photo © Sumio Yamada): As a law-abiding citizen and someone who certainly doesn’t want to catch the ire of my good friend and press row colleague, Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports, I was in a bit of a bind on Saturday afternoon. Like the rest of America - which was not one of 100 countries able to view Gennady Golovkin’s contest versus Osumanu Adama from Monte Carlo, Monaco, much to the disdain of HBO subscribers - I was relegated to…um…a “radio broadcast.” (And I have to The American Stream

Ramirez Hits the Road to Laredo

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): This winter chill has affected many people in a multitude of ways this past week. Whether stranded on frozen highways or staying overnight in high school gyms or the nearest convenience store, the lives of millions in one way or the other have been disrupted by Mother Nature. Ivan Redkach vs. Tony Luis

Ivan Redkach vs. Tony Luis

There is a notion in boxing that the valuable skill of pure power is something you are either born with or you’ll never have. Watch Ivan Redkach for just one round and that pure power is evident. When he lands a punch his opponent’s demeanor immediately changes. If he lands flush his opponents are disconnected from their senses. Redkach’s power and ferocity in the ring are downright scary, leading many boxing insiders to believe that it won’t be lon Ivan Redkach vs. Tony Luis

What Goes Around Comes Around (for Everybody)

By Steve Kim (Graphic by Chee): Well, we found out why Robert Guerrero had suddenly disappeared - y’ know, like a Ghost - in the wake of his lopsided loss to Floyd Mayweather in May. It turns out that he was plotting his escape from Golden Boy Promotions, which had given him the fight he so badly yearned for (while blowing up the inboxes of every boxing scribe in the world with an incessant stream of press releases long before the actual fight). Santa Cruz, Rested and Relaxed in 2013

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): As I walked through the beehive of activity that was the MGM Grand Hotel on the weekend of September 14th when Floyd Mayweather faced Saul Alvarez in the year’s biggest boxing event, I was struck by a particular scene near the Rouge (a favorite watering hole for us boxing scribes) and the adjacent slot machines. James Kirkland Returns (Again)

By Gabriel Montoya: The struggles and triumphs of James Kirkland have been many. Born in East Austin, Texas, he found his way to Donald “Pops” Billingsley’s gym somewhere around the age of eight. From there, a bond with boxing champion Ann Wolfe was first forged and continues to strengthen with each passing storm in a relationship as tumultuous as it is fruitful. A Testy Issue and Other Boxing Thoughts

By Gabriel Montoya: A Testy Issue...The random anti-doping testing issue makes some boxing people touchy but it seems like some fighters, following the example set by Floyd Mayweather Jr. over three years ago, definitely want it. Danny Garcia wanted it for Lucas Matthysse. Timothy Bradley has gotten it twice now in a row. He’ll keep doing it; I’ll bet. Freddie Roach wanted it for Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios. Ruslan Provodnikov has been doing it voluntarily two fights in a row A Testy Issue and Other Boxing Thoughts

Heading into his fourth fight of the year and second defense of his light heavyweight crown Saturday against Tony Bellew, 20-1-1 (12), at the Colisee de Quebec live on HBO, Stevenson is arguably on track to be 2013’s “Fighter of the Year.” To start the year, the Port-au-Prince, Haiti native with a criminal past, now making his Stevenson Looks to Cement Fighter of the Year Status vs. Bellew

Porter vs. Kirkland: A Tale of Two Crossroads Contenders

By Gabriel Montoya: When I moved out of the boxing hotspot that is Southern California for more chill confines of NorCal’s Bay Area, I was told on Twitter by a boxing scribe from the region, “Welcome to Boxing Exile.” Once a hub of boxing activity, (San Francisco boasted the first gloved heavyweight champion) the Bay Area no longer enjoys such a distinction despite boasting the number two boxer in the world, super middleweight champion Andre Ward in nearby Oakland.
