Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

I Said That? A 2012 Preview Review: Part Two

By Marty Mulcahey: In Part One of the annual “Preview Review,” I lamented journalists making predictions in 2012 certain in the knowledge that few readers will remember what was penned 365 days ago. To write for Maxboxing is to be held to a higher standard. To that end, I venture back in time to review my predictions for 2012, a yearly ritual of evaluating choices that fluctuates between self-abuse and narcissism. Again, I encourage readers to take a look around the ‘Net. I don’t think you will I Said That? A 2012 Preview Review: Part Two

The HBO TV Cheat Sheet- Sept. 3, 2011

By Marty Mulcahey: Judging by the lack of buzz, there is a good chance that tonight’s “HBO Boxing After Dark” show will be the cable network’s lowest rated boxing broadcast of the year despite headliner Andre Berto coming off an HBO appearance that was the network’s third most watched boxing event of 2011. The card lacks the marquee feel of an HBO broadcast, with the headliner returning from a loss and... The HBO TV Cheat Sheet- Sept. 3, 2011

Saturday Night at the Berto Rivage

By Steve Kim: This upcoming weekend marks the start of the college football season with a few marquee match-ups (LSU-Oregon and Boise State-UGA) but boxing also kicks off the first weekend of September as IBF welterweight titlist Jan Zaveck defends his belt against Andre Berto from the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, MS on HBO. This past week on a national conference call with reporters, Lou "Mount St." DiBella... Saturday Night at the Berto Rivage

ESPN2 Friday Night Fights TV Cheat Sheet- July 15, 2011

By Marty Mulcahey: Teddy Atlas and Joe Tessitore return to a familiar haunt, New York City’s historic Roseland Ballroom, reappearing after a successful PR Best promotion five weeks ago. This event should attract a good crowd as well, with all four boxers hailing from the New York City vicinity. Even if they were not, the foursome could draw based on their ethnicities, with New York City’s diverse makeup keen to support boxers of Polish ESPN2 Friday Night Fights TV Cheat Sheet- July 15, 2011

An Autumn in Russia for Atlas

After the season finale of ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights” (which curiously will take place on Saturday night) in Montreal, Teddy Atlas won’t have much time to unwind and enjoy the upcoming football season- or anything else for that matter. In a matter of days, he will be on a plane heading to Russia to work with his heavyweight Alexander Povetkin. An Autumn in Russia for Atlas

The Weekend TV Cheat Sheet

Marty Mulcahey: July is going out with a bang. This weekend’s action is highlighted by a PPV card built specifically to provide highly competitive fights, from the top of the card to the opening feature. Sadly, the promoter/fan relationship has become so jaded that this PPV is actually marketing itself as unique because it has no weak match-ups, with every fight a near 50-50 proposition as to who emerges as the winner. This tells fans tha The Weekend TV Cheat Sheet

Friday TV Cheat Sheet: Part One

By Marty Mulcahey: I am looking forward to a second straight week of four televised boxing programs, with three good cards complimenting a PPV event few can find complimentary words for. In today’s portion of the TV Cheat Sheet (the second time in a row I have had to split the feature to accommodate the schedule) Friday’s ESPN2 and Showtime fight cards are covered. For good measure, I preview the untelevised heavyweight title fight between WBA titlist David Haye and John Ruiz. This weekend does Friday TV Cheat Sheet: Part One

Preview and predictions for 2010 – Part II

Martin Mulcahey: In part two of this yearly series six more weight classes are evaluated, traveling north in weight from featherweight to jr. middleweight. In part one the weight classes covered were from strawweight up to jr. featherweight, and I gave my prediction on a champion that will stay, champion that will go, and a prospect to keep an eye on. The titlists from the IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO were considered in selecting the champions who I believe will keep or lose their title. The only Preview and predictions for 2010 – Part II
Because No One Demanded it…

Because No One Demanded it…

By Cotoye Duran: Back when Yours Truly was but a mere pup, Mama and Papa Coyote would ask me every year around the holidays to make a list of the things I wanted for Christmas. It was never easy because, even to this day, I thought asking for gifts was a speck pretentious. If I was good, I figured my good deeds wouldn’t go unnoticed and Mr. Kringle would merely give me what he thought I deserved (and I have a deep respect for Santa.
