Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Golden Civil War?

By Steve Kim (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): There really wasn’t much going on during the bout between WBC lightweight titlist Omar Figueroa and amateur nemesis Jerry Belmontes. Truth be told, there was much more attention paid to the lingering tension between Oscar De la Hoya and the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Richard Schaefer, who once again acted like neither were in each other’s presence despite sitting just a few feet apart. The only thing chillier than the weather out in C Golden Civil War?

Leo on Cruz Control

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © K9 Photos): Tomorrow night, Leo Santa Cruz and Cristian Mijares will do battle at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada for champion Santa Cruz’s World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight title. Mijares, 49-7-2 (24), looks to come in and be the first to add an “L” to the popular champion’s résumé. Meanwhile, Santa Cruz will look to remain undefeated in the second defense of the title he won in August of 2013. The always smiling, Rosemead, California resident Santa C Leo on Cruz Control

Mike Alvarado Takes His First Steps as Champion

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): On Friday afternoon, WBO junior welterweight champion “Mile High” Mike Alvarado, on his second attempt, weighed under the 140-pound limit at 139.8, insuring his fight tonight the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado. His opponent, Ruslan Provodnikov, 22-2, (15) a strong-willed boxer-puncher out of Beryozovo, Russia, weighed the same on the first try. Media Daze

By Steve Kim: Tuesday, August 27th was the media day for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at his training camp in Big Bear. A bus that would leave at nine in the morning from Lot 7 across the street from the Staples Center was available for any media members who chose to attend this gathering. Media days are a staple of any big promotion that require a saturation of coverage, which you’ll certainly be subjected to throughout this upcoming week as we draw closer to this Saturday night’s big pay-per- Media Daze

Esquivias Stops Marquez; Arreola Goes all Nightmare on Mitchell

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): One of Efrain Esquivias’ dreams came true Saturday night at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, CA when he stopped Rafael Marquez at 19 seconds of the ninth round of a pitched battle on a special telecast of Showtime’s “ShoBox: The New Generation.” The 30-year-old fighter out of Carson, CA was coming off two decision losses and a draw coming into this bout with the former two-division champion Marquez, who was coming off Esquivias Stops Marquez; Arreola Goes all Nightmare on Mitchell

Get Ready for a Fast and Furious Fall

By Steve Kim: With the turn of the calendar and the summer coming to a close, boxing (which had been in a relative slumber) comes back to life starting this week. Maxboxing readers and fans often ask me, “Why do boxing and the networks shut it down between June and August?” The answer is very simple; since it’s evident that television viewing levels are down in the summer months (as people go on vacation, etc.), promoters and television execs aren’t as willing to stage major cards Get Ready for a Fast and Furious Fall

Azad Championship Report - Terrazas Hopes to Open Doors with Victory Over Santa Cruz

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Hoganphotos /Golden Boy Promotions): Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA, home to many wars like the bloody Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez III, Tim Bradley-Ruslan Provodnikov and Brandon Rios-Mike Alvarado I, Victor Terrazas walks his deadliest stretch of highway when he squares up with former bantamweight titleholder Leo Santa Cruz, 24-0-1 (14). Golden Boy Schedules Fall/Winter Slate of Fights

By Steve Kim: Last week, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer returned to the office after a well-earned vacation that saw him travel across the country on the Saul Alvarez-Floyd Mayweather press tour and then (after a short respite) fly to Dubai to negotiate a possible fight between Devon Alexander and Amir Khan. He finally got around to calling back members of the media who were inquiring as to just who would fill out “The One” undercard and how the rest of GBP’s fall and winter Golden Boy Schedules Fall/Winter Slate of Fights

The Pay-Per-View Soapbox – Aug. 8, 2013

By Steve Kim: In five weeks the most highly-anticipated pay-per-view card of 2013 takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas when Floyd Mayweather faces Saul Alvarez. What has added to the anticipation of this event is the addition of Lucas Matthysse’s battle versus Danny Garcia, a fight that could easily headline on Showtime on its own merits. Whoever was waffling on purchasing “The One,” is now probably off the fence. They will be forking over their hard earned money for this show... The Pay-Per-View Soapbox – Aug. 8, 2013

Fight Night Provides Springboard

By Steve Kim: This Saturday night from the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, the latest installment of the “Fight Night” series on the NBC Sports Network (10:30 p.m., ET) takes place. It’s a tripleheader featuring middleweight Curtis Stevens, cruiserweight Eddie Chambers and heavyweight Tomasz Adamek. This series, which began in January of 2012, has provided two things on a consistent basis: solid entertainment and a springboard for boxers to go and perform on bigger (and more lucrative) Fight Night Provides Springboard

A Beautiful Site/Sight

By Steve Kim (Photo © Saul G. Sanchez - w/ Photo Gallery inside article © German Villasenor): In front a record-setting crowd of 8,629 at the StubHub Center (formerly known as the Home Depot Center), a memorable night of action was capped off by Marcos Maidana steamrolling the game-but-outgunned Josesito Lopez in six rounds. It was a back-and-forth affair that saw both men have their moments but it was the Argentine’s power that carried the day. Before that, Erislandy Lara turned back the A Beautiful Site/Sight

Roach Looks to Rebound in 2013

By Steve Kim: As 2012 U.S. Olympian Jose Ramirez was working the mitts with one of Freddie Roach’s assistant trainers at the Wild Card Boxing Club, the question asked to the noted trainer last Saturday afternoon (while he was leaning on the top rope near his famous corner perch near the window overlooking Vine Street in Hollywood) was: Did he suddenly forget how to train fighters? “I must’ve,” he answered, laughing at the question... Azad Championship Report - Satchel Paige Would Be Proud

By Steve Kim: Legendary hurler Satchel Paige, who Bernard Hopkins has referenced more than once as a role model, would be proud of “The Executioner.” Once again, Hopkins riddled a (much) younger foe in the prime of his athletic life on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, taming Tavoris Cloud over 12 rounds to capture the IBF light heavyweight crown. Yeah, Hopkins isn’t looking back because something could be gaining on him. But it hasn’t caught him yet... Azad Championship Report - Satchel Paige Would Be Proud

Azad Championship Report: Ponce de Leon vs. Mares: Signed, Sealed and Delivered

By Steve Kim: After what has been a slow start to the 2013 boxing schedule, beset by injuries and postponements, it seems to be picking up steam going into the spring. And Golden Boy Promotions is doing more than its part to add to this momentum with what could be the most fan-friendly doubleheader of the year on April 20th. I Said That? A 2012 Preview Review: Part One

By Marty Mulcahey: It is that time of the New Year for me again, my yearly ritual of evaluating predictions made over the previous year. It is an annual act which fluctuates wildly between self-abuse and narcissism. Visitors to sports websites are sure to notice how easy it is for writers to make predictions at this time of the year, certain in the knowledge that few will remember what they wrote 365 days from now. Here at Maxboxing, we have higher standards and are held accountable for what is I Said That? A 2012 Preview Review: Part One

Nishioka’s fighting heart drives him towards Donaire

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): At the end of 2010, super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka, 39-4-3, 24 KOs, was named Japan’s “Fighter of the Year.” At the ceremony, a video challenge by Fernando Montiel was made to Nishioka who readily accepted. “Mile High” Opportunity for Alvarado

By Steve Kim: On Saturday night, perhaps the most anticipated bout for hardcore fight fans takes place when Mike Alvarado squares off against Brandon Rios at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California (HBO 10 p.m., ET). Azad Championship Report: Donaire vs. Nishioka: Respect on a Whole New Level

By Gabriel Montoya: It was all respect with a lovely chocolate cake on the side in downtown Los Angeles last week when IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire met with Toshiaki Nishioka to announce their October 13 showdown at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA.
