Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Bayamon Bomb?

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME) WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia got away with one on Saturday night. Billed as a “homecoming fight” at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, it all became anything but as Mauricio Herrera, a perennial also-ran who is no easy out, beat Garcia in all facets of the fight except with the judges. Over 12 rounds, Herrera hounded Garcia with elusive pressure, a steady double jab to the head and body and (sneaky)... Bayamon Bomb?

Can Victor Find the “Vicious”?

By Bill Tibbs: “Vicious” Victor Ortiz will return to his day job on January 30th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York after a long break - no pun intended. Ortiz is returning after a broken jaw that saw him leave the ring for what is now nearly two years. His jaw was broken in two places in his last bout against Josesito Lopez in which he was stopped in nine rounds, contesting for the World Boxing Council (WBC) silver welterweight title in June of 2012. His return to the squared circle Can Victor Find the “Vicious”?

All He Does Is Win

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): There was something very appropriate about the music which accompanied Tim Bradley to the ring at the Thomas and Mack Center on Saturday night. “All I Do Is Win” from DJ Khaled blared throughout the arena and perhaps no other song captures what Bradley’s career has been about. And he showed it again, earning a split decision verdict over Juan Manuel Marquez. Yeah, all he does is win... All He Does Is Win

Garcia vs. Matthysse Looks to Steal the Show

Bill Tibbs: Fight fans are optimistic that the Saul Alvarez vs. Floyd Mayweather bout (September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Showtime Pay-Per-View) does have potential for some real fireworks. However, these same fans were really excited at the undercard shootout announced shortly thereafter. Azad Championship Report - Saturday Night Fever

By Steve Kim (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): This past weekend, we saw competing cards once again between HBO and Showtime. The networks were scheduled to feature six fights between them (before inclement weather in Argentina forced the welterweight contest between Luis Abregu and Antonin Decarie to start early, thus not making the HBO broadcast). For years, head-to-head shows were problematic and spoke volumes on just how fractured this business could be at times. And folks... Azad Championship Report - Saturday Night Fever

The Return of the Baby Bull

By Steve Kim: On the night of December 8th, near the entrance of the MGM Grand Garden Arena, this reporter was picking up his ringside credential for the fourth chapter of the rivalry between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. At the time, also at the will call area just happened to be one Juan Diaz, who I had not seen for quite awhile. Diaz, a former unified lightweight champion, was retired for a couple of years and was in town to enjoy the festivities. Coming off a round of golf with The Return of the Baby Bull

Hank Lundy and Dannie Williams’ Collision Course

By Alec Kohut: It is far too rare in boxing when two up-and-coming, top prospects are actually willing to a risk a loss by facing each other for an average purse and the chance to make a statement in their division.
