Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

A still-hungry Andre Ward meets Sullivan Barrera March 26th in Oakland

By John J. Raspanti: Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) makes his debut in the light heavyweight division March 26th when he faces hard-hitting light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) at Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA. Ward, 32, was last seen in the ring nine months ago dispatching over-matched Englishman Paul Smith in nine one-sided rounds. Some criticized his performance—saying he appeared a step slower. Ready to make a point: Andre Ward returns to the ring

By John J. Raspanti: “But GGG is like all punchers. That’s why with a guy like GGG, -- you have to show them, and by the time they figure it out, guess what? Fight’s over." - Andre Ward. In 2004, Andre Ward surprised many by capturing the gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Ward debuted as a professional a year later when he beat Chris Molina. In 2008, he defeated Jerson Ravelo to win NABO super middleweight title. There were whispers about the strength of Ward’s chin and. Ready to make a point: Andre Ward returns to the ring

Hopefully Froch vs. Chavez Is Next

Golovkin Moves on Without Chavez Jr.

By Steve Kim: On Saturday afternoon in a small conference room at the LAX Marriott, WBA middleweight beltholder Gennady Golovkin held a media roundtable with a select handful of boxing scribes. If it were up to him, he’d be talking about his upcoming summer showdown against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. But alas, Chavez seemed more intent on battling his promoter, Top Rank Promotions than facing “GGG.”... Froch-Groves War at Wembley on May 31

By Bill Tibbs: On May 31, a raucous Wembley Stadium in England will be rocking when the rematch between Carl Froch, 32-2 (23), and George Groves, 19-1 (15), lights up London. The iconic soccer stadium should be as heated and lively as the fight between the two United Kingdom brawlers. The first fight ended in a somewhat controversial fashion and Groves is out to prove the stoppage, deemed too quick by some, was just that. Froch will look to erase any “controversy” tag from their first... Froch-Groves War at Wembley on May 31

The 2013 “K9 Awards”: Part Two

By Steve Kim: OK, after a short intermission, we resume our highly unofficial - and quite frankly, not all that important – year-end awards and look back at 2013. We now return to our regularly scheduled festivities… FIGHT OF THE YEAR / 5 - Carl Froch UD12 Mikkel Kessler: You get the sense that if these guys fought a hundred times, they’d produce a hundred good fights. The Best Fight of the Weekend?

By Steve Kim: While there is an overflow of coverage in the States revolving around the fight in Macao between Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios, to those in Jolly Ol’ England, that event is a mere curiosity. For the Brits, their main focus centers on the super middleweight grudge match between WBA and IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch and upstart George Groves. In these parts, this is the fight of the weekend. Groves is a talented young contender who has the scalps of amateur nemesis J The Best Fight of the Weekend?

Why Is Andre Ward So Testy About Testing?

By Gabriel Montoya: Heading into the HBO-televised title fight between super middleweight champion Andre “S.O.G.” Ward and Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez, a battle of another kind has emerged. The former will be fought with gloved fists. The latter has been fought with empty words and bold actions. The fight, now only a championship affair for Ward after Rodriguez missed the 168-pound weight limit by two pounds Friday, will be held Saturday night at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, CA. B Why Is Andre Ward So Testy About Testing?

Edwin Rodriguez: Confidence Bomb

By Gabriel Montoya: For boxers, the sport is all about peaks and valleys. Hopefully, the trajectory is always of the upward variety. Plateaus are fine. The occasional dip to the canvas is fine as long as you get up and finish on the turnbuckle, arms raised in victory. The game is about reaching a new level and in doing so, discovering you can climb even further. On Saturday, Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez, 24-0 (16), will attempt his highest climb yet when he challenges super middleweight champion A Edwin Rodriguez: Confidence Bomb

Sugar and The Man Rumble Down Under

By Bill Tibbs: On October 23rd, Pomona, California’s “Sugar” Shane Mosley will enter the ring at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in New South Wales, Australia for the 58th time in an illustrious, two-decade career. Mosley will do battle with Australian Anthony Mundine for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) International junior middleweight title. While many feel the fight will tell more about the direction of Mundine’s career than Mosley’s, the fight does pose some interesting questions. Sugar and The Man Rumble Down Under

Azad Championship Report - How Does Mares Stack Up?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Gene Blevins - Hoganphotos /Golden Boy Promotions): When you start talking about the elite of boxing, usually Floyd Mayweather, Andre Ward, Juan Manuel Marquez and Sergio Martinez are the names thrown around first and foremost. The Pay-Per-View Soapbox – Aug. 8, 2013

By Steve Kim: In five weeks the most highly-anticipated pay-per-view card of 2013 takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas when Floyd Mayweather faces Saul Alvarez. What has added to the anticipation of this event is the addition of Lucas Matthysse’s battle versus Danny Garcia, a fight that could easily headline on Showtime on its own merits. And Then Came Summer: Edwin Rodriguez and Company Bring the Heat

By Gabriel Montoya: Summer is no time for the blues. Personally, it’s jazz-rock (circa 1971) kind of season for me. I’m living in a new city with Miles Davis’ jazz-rock masterpiece “Jack Johnson” on repeat and enjoying the low-key gems of summer. No, there aren’t big marquee fights out there. There’s no summer tent pole pay-per-view in boxing this year. Azad Championship Report - Who Needs Who?

By Steve Kim: In a fight in which its intensity matched the electric atmosphere inside the O2 Arena in London, Carl Froch gained revenge on his “Super Six” conqueror, Mikkel Kessler, by the scores of 116-112, 115-113 and the far-too-wide margin of 118-110, to unify the IBF and WBA super middleweight titles. It’s debatable if he’s as good as Joe Calzaghe from a historical perspective but this much is clear; Froch is currently the best and most accomplished boxer in Britain.
