Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Pacquiao and Rios Issue Bomb Threat

By Bill Tibbs (Photos © Chris Farina / Top Rank): When Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao and Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios lock horns on Saturday at the Cotai Arena at the Venetian Resort in Macao, China, it is hard to imagine this bout being anything but “Bombs Away” in an all-action slugfest. Pacquiao enters the “Clash at Cotai” coming off a serious (“Ya coulda counted to 50”), sixth round KO loss at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez last December and Rios himself has engaged in a series of punishing wars... Santana on ShoBox

By Steve Kim (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): While Guillermo Rigondeaux faces Nonito Donaire this weekend in a high-profile junior featherweight showdown at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, another Cuban lefty continues his climb up the boxing ladder the night before. Lightweight Angelo Santana faces Bahodir Mamadjonov at the Treasure Island Casino in Las Vegas (Showtime, 10 p.m., ET/PT). Like many other Cubans defectors, he doesn’t speak much English (as of yet) and his story has Santana on ShoBox

Sweet Savagery

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): It’s rare that the sport of boxing - which too many times lets down its fan base - not only delivers on its promises but exceeds them. That’s precisely what took place at the Home Depot Center this past weekend as Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado put on a display of beautiful brutality that saw “Bam Bam” eventually halt Alvarado after seven rounds of pulsating action with an... Pacquiao-Marquez Fatigue?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): On Monday afternoon at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, Top Rank held a press conference to formally announce the next go-round between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. The two rivals have battled for 36 rounds with not much separating them (with the “Pac-Man” holding a disputed 2-0-1 advantage in the series) but the fourth chapter of his series has resulted in a collective groan from many on social media platforms... Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios: “This is my job and I love it”

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): Christmas 2011 almost didn’t come for former WBA lightweight champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios, 29-0-1 (22). It was the week heading into his December 3rd clash with John Murray in New York’s Madison Square Garden and he was woefully overweight. No, he was not James Toney overweight. Rather, his body... By Steve Kim: Through its ups and downs, Las Vegas will always be an important component of the boxing landscape. The 2011 K9 Awards: Part Two

By Steve Kim: After a short intermission (Trust me; this interlude isn’t nearly as long as some of the time that elapses between fights on the non-televised portions of undercards), we now conclude the annual “K9 Awards.” And in a year that saw a good deal of back-and-forth slugfests, we look back... What Drives Brandon Rios

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): WBA world lightweight champion Brandon Rios is a hyper guy. From the moment cameraman Brian Harty and I walked into the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy in Oxnard, CA, Rios was all over the place. Rios Chops Wood at the Palms

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): After four rounds, it was a mismatch. What was supposed to be an entertaining back-and-forth affair between WBA lightweight titlist Miguel Acosta and challenger Brandon Rios was a one-sided drubbing. Using deft movement and his long arcing punches, Acosta had not only outboxed Rios but stunned him with a series of right hands and a particular body punch that... Rios Chops Wood at the Palms

No Cherry Picking for “Bam Bam”

By Steve Kim: In the era of the four major world championships, the modus operandi is for a young fighter is to be maneuvered toward the most vulnerable or softest touch in the division in a first attempt to win one of these belts. Nonito Donaire Dares to Dethrone the King

By Ryan Maquiñana (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): At the Undisputed Gym in San Carlos, Calif., the heavy bag suffers a princely beating at the hands of four different legends in one night. “Here’s Mike Tyson,” says bantamweight Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire, as he pulverizes the bag with blazing double left hooks. “Bap-bap!
