Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

What Goes Around Comes Around (for Everybody)

By Steve Kim (Graphic by Chee): Well, we found out why Robert Guerrero had suddenly disappeared - y’ know, like a Ghost - in the wake of his lopsided loss to Floyd Mayweather in May. It turns out that he was plotting his escape from Golden Boy Promotions, which had given him the fight he so badly yearned for (while blowing up the inboxes of every boxing scribe in the world with an incessant stream of press releases long before the actual fight). What was whispered about in the background of the What Goes Around Comes Around (for Everybody)

I Said THAT?! The 2010 Preview Review: Part Two

By Marty Mulcahey: In Part One of the annual preview review, I lamented how journalists making predictions for 2011 are certain in the knowledge that few readers will remember what they wrote in a year’s time. To write for Maxboxing is to be held to a higher standard, and to that end, I venture back in time to review my predictions for I Said THAT?! The 2010 Preview Review: Part Two
The Big PPV Preview

The Big PPV Preview

Marty Mulcahey: It is with sense of exasperation that I note boxing fans have become conditioned to the fact pay-per-view events are sold on the basis of star value at the top vice competitive matches from top to bottom. Weekend TV Cheat Sheet: Part One

Weekend TV Cheat Sheet: Part One

Marty Mulcahey: It’s finally here. Boxing fans’ big fight weekend is topped by the Floyd Mayweather-Shane Mosley clash, with anticipation building nicely on the heels of HBO’s “24/7” series, which focused on the duo’s opposing personas. However, the PPV is not the only show on TV. Three other fight cards will be tel Weekend TV Cheat Sheet: Part One

Without a Trace: “Ghost” Guerrero Looks to Make All Doubts Disappear

Ryan Maquiñana: In November 2007, Robert Guerrero was on the cusp of stardom. He powered his way to 20 wins in his first 21 bouts, with a healthy helping of television exposure on Fox Sports Net, HBO, and Showtime. As the pride of Gilroy, a town outside San Jose renowned as the “Garlic Capital of the World”, Guerrero Without a Trace: “Ghost” Guerrero Looks to Make All Doubts Disappear

Preview and predictions for 2010 – Part II

Martin Mulcahey: In part two of this yearly series six more weight classes are evaluated, traveling north in weight from featherweight to jr. middleweight. In part one the weight classes covered were from strawweight up to jr. featherweight, and I gave my prediction on a champion that will stay, champion that will go, and a prospect to keep an eye on. The titlists from the IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO were considered in selecting the champions who I believe will keep or lose their title. The only Preview and predictions for 2010 – Part II

10 for '10

By Steve Kim: As 2009 winds down, we can start to look ahead to the upcoming year. 2010 already has various bouts like Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather, Shane Mosley-Andre Berto, Edwin Valero-Antonio DeMarco, Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez IV and “Super Six” match-ups on the schedule. It figures to be an eventful year for a sport that has created strong momentum recently. Here are ten bouts that I would like to see in the upcoming year. I excluded any fights that are already made or on their way 10 for '10

Thoughts from the Home Office -- Reflections on an Unusually Noisy

By Lee Groves: In years past, December used to be a quiet one for boxing. Not wanting to compete with the Christmas/New Year’s causeway, promoters used the time to reset and refresh while boxers either prepared for their January assignments or spent quality time with loved ones like the rest of us. HBO and Boxing - At a Crossroads

HBO and Boxing - At a Crossroads

By Thomas Hauser: HBO and boxing are at a crossroads. The first draft of the network’s overall budget for 2010 was presented in July. It called for a US$15,000,000 reduction for HBO Sports; a cut in excess of twenty percent. Then, during the first week of September, Michael Lombardo (president of HBO’s programming group and West Coast operations) further signaled senior management’s displeasure with HBO and Boxing - At a Crossroads
