Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Bute returns after long layoff to stop Di Luisa

By John J. Raspanti: After disposing of little-known Italian Andrea Di Luisa in the fourth round last Saturday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal, CN., former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute shouted, “I’m back.” But is he? Bute, 35, hasn’t been the same fighter since being steamrolled by Carl Froch in May 2012. Froch not only beat the tar out of the transplanted Romanian, he took away his mojo. Immediately after the match, Bute talked rematch, but his words rung hollow, especially Bute returns after long layoff to stop Di Luisa

The Russian keeps on Krush'in

By Jason Gonzalez at ringside (Photo © David Spagnolo, Main Events): Montréal, QC - Returning to the squared circle, just 4 months removed from the biggest victory of his career, the unified (WBO, WBA, and IBF) light heavyweight champion, Sergey “The Krusher” Kovalev, of Chelyabinsk, Russia was back to his winning ways. The 31-year-old improved to 27-0-1, (24) further tightening his grip on the 175 pound division. Kovalev scored a sensational eighth round technical knockout over former... Pascal Risks No.1 Ranking Against 'The Beast'

Former WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (29-2-1, 17 KOs) risks his No. 1 ranking this Saturday night against Argentine boxer Roberto "The Beast" Bolonti (35-3, 24 KOs) in the 10-round main event at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. Bolonti was originally scheduled to fight Lucian Bute but he was forced to pull out of the fight with a back injury and Pascal was supposed to fight Donovan George... Head-to-Head: Froch vs. Groves II

By Gabriel Montoya and Coyote Duran: This week’s biggest debates have centered on the “domestic” rematch between Carl “The Cobra” Froch and George “Saint George” Groves. Their November 2013 fight for Froch’s WBA and IBF super middleweight titles ended in controversy when referee (and I use that term loosely) Howard Foster stopped the action in Froch’s favor in the ninth frame despite Groves having not hit the deck even once. With 80,000 boxing fans tentatively... Head-to-Head: Froch vs. Groves II

Froch-Groves War at Wembley on May 31

By Bill Tibbs: On May 31, a raucous Wembley Stadium in England will be rocking when the rematch between Carl Froch, 32-2 (23), and George Groves, 19-1 (15), lights up London. The iconic soccer stadium should be as heated and lively as the fight between the two United Kingdom brawlers. The first fight ended in a somewhat controversial fashion and Groves is out to prove the stoppage, deemed too quick by some, was just that. Froch will look to erase any “controversy” tag from their first... Froch-Groves War at Wembley on May 31

A Complicated Legacy

By Steve Kim: News spread on Thursday evening that after a long illness, longtime World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman passed away at the age of 82. His death left a myriad of responses ranging from sadness to jubilation, depending on the point of view you had on the man. Like most everything in life, describing his impact and legacy isn’t as simple as black and white; there is a deep gray area most aren’t willing to accept. Pascal Betters Bute, Takam Draws against Perez

By Derek Bonnett: Jean Pascal and Lucian Bute finally made it into the ring with one another after the evenly matched light heavyweights endured a lengthy postponement of their scheduled May 25 bout after a hand operation sidelined Bute, a Canadian-based Romanian. The Canadian-based Haitian, Pascal, kept busy making easy work of George Blades in September. Bute has fought only once since his crushing defeat at the hands of Carl Froch and that was a disputed win over Denis Grachev. The experts Pascal Betters Bute, Takam Draws against Perez

Is the Bute Bubble About to Burst?

By Steve Kim: Tonight at the Bell Centre, a Montreal showdown takes place between Jean Pascal and Lucian Bute. And for Bute, much more than the NABF light heavyweight title or city bragging rights are on the line. Simply put, for the 33-year-old native of Romania, this is a referendum on his whole career. It wasn’t all that long ago when Bute was one of the premier attractions in all of boxing and the franchise fighter of Montreal. The Biggest Battle Ever in Montreal?

By Steve Kim: Yvon Michel, whose company, GYM is staging this tomorrow night’s contest between Jean Pascal and Lucian Bute, has had a full itinerary the past several weeks and days leading into this promotion, culminating this weekend at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. But Michel doesn’t mind one bit. When you remind him that he’s had a busy week, he corrects you by stating it’s actually, “a good week.” He has reason to feel this way. Bute-Pascal and the (Possible) Future of Drug Testing in Boxing

By Gabriel Montoya: Writer’s note: This article is going to be a little unorthodox. Then again, when it comes to the subject of anti-doping in boxing and my place within that issue, everything has become more than a little unorthodox. It is my wish to give you, the reader, as full a disclosure about my involvement in the development of the anti-doping testing protocol used by GYM-Interbox as possible. Something of the Year

By Gabriel Montoya: This is that list time of the year. What did I think was best out of all the things that happened in boxing? Which fighter’s journey affected me most? Life is comprised of moments. “Remember that time...?” Boxing is that to an extreme. Round one of Marvelous Marvin Hagler vs. Tommy Hearns. An entire series of battles in three minutes. The Ratings Game

By Steve Kim (K9’s "Cold War" image by Chee, MaxBoxing): As boxing’s “Cold War” shows no signs of thawing, those who cover boxing are now subjected to various spin-doctoring from the two major networks (HBO and Showtime) facilitating this blood feud between Top Rank Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions as they each insist it is the dominant television entity in the sport. A Testy Issue and Other Boxing Thoughts

By Gabriel Montoya: A Testy Issue...The random anti-doping testing issue makes some boxing people touchy but it seems like some fighters, following the example set by Floyd Mayweather Jr. over three years ago, definitely want it. Danny Garcia wanted it for Lucas Matthysse. Timothy Bradley has gotten it twice now in a row. He’ll keep doing it; I’ll bet. Freddie Roach wanted it for Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios. The Best Fight of the Weekend?

By Steve Kim: While there is an overflow of coverage in the States revolving around the fight in Macao between Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios, to those in Jolly Ol’ England, that event is a mere curiosity. For the Brits, their main focus centers on the super middleweight grudge match between WBA and IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch and upstart George Groves. In these parts, this is the fight of the weekend. Groves is a talented young contender who has the scalps of amateur nemesis J The Best Fight of the Weekend?

Why Is Andre Ward So Testy About Testing?

By Gabriel Montoya: Heading into the HBO-televised title fight between super middleweight champion Andre “S.O.G.” Ward and Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez, a battle of another kind has emerged. The former will be fought with gloved fists. The latter has been fought with empty words and bold actions. The fight, now only a championship affair for Ward after Rodriguez missed the 168-pound weight limit by two pounds Friday, will be held Saturday night at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, CA. Looking ahead, the two promotional titans that are Top Rank Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions are setting up their itineraries for the upcoming year on HBO and Showtime respectively. By Steve Kim (Photo © Gene Blevins - Hoganphotos /Golden Boy Promotions): When you start talking about the elite of boxing, usually Floyd Mayweather, Andre Ward, Juan Manuel Marquez and Sergio Martinez are the names thrown around first and foremost. Azad Championship Report - Stevenson Kronks out Dawson

By Gabriel Montoya: The origin of raw knockout power is the best mystery in boxing. We can use science to measure punching power as HBO has apparently been using a device under the fighter’s wraps to measure this very thing for some time now from what I am told. Pure knockout power can be harnessed with solid fighting technique to be sure. The straighter the shot, the better the torque, snap and speed with which it the punch lands. Azad Championship Report - Who Needs Who?

By Steve Kim: In a fight in which its intensity matched the electric atmosphere inside the O2 Arena in London, Carl Froch gained revenge on his “Super Six” conqueror, Mikkel Kessler, by the scores of 116-112, 115-113 and the far-too-wide margin of 118-110, to unify the IBF and WBA super middleweight titles. It’s debatable if he’s as good as Joe Calzaghe from a historical perspective but this much is clear; Froch is currently the best and most accomplished boxer in Britain. Has Carl Froch learned from the past?

By Gabriel Montoya: The rematch between Carl “the Cobra” Froch and Mikkel “the Viking Warrior” Kessler is upon us. In the lead up to the fight at the O2 Arena, Froch was unable to get a few answers for my preview piece to me until after it came out. His conference call was cut short when his phone cut off. Thankfully, through Bernie Bahrmasel a connection with Froch was made. This being the first rematch for both men, I was curious if he saw anything different in this preparation that he missed Has Carl Froch learned from the past?

Mikkel Kessler vs. Carl Froch II: Game of Adjustments

By Gabriel Montoya: In any rematch of a close fight, the central question is “Who can adjust and improve from the first fight?” For the past three months of training camp, Carl “The Cobra” Froch and Mikkel Kessler, each preparing for his first career rematch this Saturday at the O2 Arena in London, have attempted to find those answers. Ultimately, however, the outcome may simply come down to desire and a meshing of styles.
