Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Ward Needs GGG More than GGG Needs Ward

By Ken Hissner: WBA super middleweight champion Andre “S.O.G.” Ward recently bad mouthed GGG by calling him “little G”. It wasn’t Gennady “GGG” Golovkin turning down Ward but his management per Ward. For a boxer like Ward who hasn’t defended his WBA title going on two years in November and losing the WBC title for not defending it for even longer he really has a lot of nerve. Granted there is no one at super middleweight to challenge him but he should defend against his No. 1 contender or... Ward Needs GGG More than GGG Needs Ward

Vasquez dominates Lartey

PITTSBURGH, PA. (Feb. 21, 2015) – Sammy Vasquez put on a show for his hometown fans in Pittsburgh, winning a near-shutout 10-round unanimous decision (99-91 twice, 100-90) over Emmanuel Lartey in the main event of ShoBox: The New Generation on Friday from CONSUL Energy Center. Vasquez (18-0, 13 KOs) entered the bout seeking his 10th consecutive knockout against an opponent who hadn’t been knocked down before and had been in the ring with two U.S. Olympians. Weekend combinations: Kovalev overwhelms Hopkins, Ali upends Abregu

By John J. Raspanti: It would be easy to write that Sergey Kovalev’s dominating victory over Bernard Hopkins was perpetuated by Hopkins suddenly getting old during the fight. Easy, but not exactly accurate. First off, Hopkins IS old. He’s two months shy of his fiftieth birthday, but what Kovalev did last Saturday night in Atlantic City, NJ, was something no other fighter in recent memory had been able to accomplish. He made Hopkins fight like an old man... Weekend combinations: Kovalev overwhelms Hopkins, Ali upends Abregu

Why Hopkins is fighting Kovalev

By Vikram Birring (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): Many years ago, Bernard Hopkins was an afterthought in boxing at the championship level. He lost two close decisions to Jermain Taylor, in which he saved his energy until the final rounds and mounted furious rallies, but gave up too many early ones to win on the scorecards. He claimed that the weight hindered his energy amount, not his age; at the time he was forty, ancient in boxing terms. So he moved up to 175 pounds, to face... Why Hopkins is fighting Kovalev

Weighty Matters

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): There’s no doubt that the condition of Sergio Martinez’s knee impacted the result of his fight against Miguel Cotto this past weekend at the Madison Square Garden in New York. “Maravilla” was beaten from pillar to post from the very first round. It’s clear - and without taking all the credit away from Cotto’s strong outing - this was a factor. But what’s perhaps not talked about enough is the fact that Cotto - who Weighty Matters

Cotto-Martinez: Battle of the Ages

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): One fighter appeared to get old right before our eyes. Meanwhile, another fighter seemed to defy age and time turning back both the clocks and the critics. In Saturday night’s World Middleweight Championship bout, live on HBO from New York, Miguel Cotto, 39-4 (32) and former middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, 51-3-2 (28), lit up the world’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden, in front of a loud, pro-Cotto crowd. “The City so Nice, They N Cotto-Martinez: Battle of the Ages

Head-to-Head: Martinez vs. Cotto

By Coyote Duran and Gabriel Montoya: As far as overused adages in boxing go, “crossroads fight” has to be at or near the top of the list. But I’ll be damned if it doesn’t fit the bill here – even if the fight in question involves two hardened ring veterans six years apart from one another in age. How we got to this point tonight is certainly another issue you can debate to death or until your vocal cords give out. I don’t care. Knock yourself out. This is as bitchen as fights get and as far as Head-to-Head: Martinez vs. Cotto

Martinez vs. Cotto: I Can’t Wait

By Jason Gonzalez (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): With less than a week to go before the World Cup begins in Brazil, boxing figured it would be fitting to present its rendition of the grand festivities first. How so? It’s simple: Puerto Rico versus Argentina and Argentina versus Puerto Rico at none other than the world’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden, the “Mecca of Boxing.” The “Sweet Science” takes center stage on Saturday night in what translates to be one of the most Martinez vs. Cotto: I Can’t Wait

Chavez Jr’s Choices Could Be Costly

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): The recent announcement that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., 48-1-1 (32), had turned down what appears to be a very generous offer from his promoter, Top Rank Promotions, raised a few eyebrows and questions in the boxing community. While there is no question that Chavez has worked himself into a legitimate pay-per-view attraction, especially within the lucrative and insatiable Mexican fight market, it also would appear his... Make-up Call?

By Steve Kim: Despite Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley squaring off back in June of 2012, in the end, they weren’t the two most talked-about individuals involved. That distinction went to Duane Ford and CJ Ross. The two ringside judges were in the vast minority by scoring the fight for the “Desert Storm” in what was considered the 874th black eye for boxing and about the 43rd time the sport died. Alas... By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): In a four-week stretch from April 26th to May 17th, there will be three major cards (televised by Showtime, ESPN and HBO) in the Los Angeles region, which will take place at the StubHub Center, the Galen Center at USC and the Forum, respectively. Ivan Redkach vs. Tony Luis

There is a notion in boxing that the valuable skill of pure power is something you are either born with or you’ll never have. Watch Ivan Redkach for just one round and that pure power is evident. When he lands a punch his opponent’s demeanor immediately changes. If he lands flush his opponents are disconnected from their senses. Redkach’s power and ferocity in the ring are downright scary, leading many boxing insiders to believe that it won’t be lon Ivan Redkach vs. Tony Luis

“To Emanuel”

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © K9 Photos): My friend, friend to us all, Emanuel Steward died on October 25, 2012, unexpectedly. Even when it was announced, there was confusion as to how true it was. No one wanted to believe it. Amid that early confusion, I texted Steve Kim, asking if it was true. I didn’t want to hear his voice if it was true. I remember Steve telling me Emanuel was indeed gone. We spoke briefly. No one could talk right then. Speaking too long only made it more true. I haven& “To Emanuel”

Relocation and Vindication in Youngstown

By Steve Kim (Photo © Bob Barton): This Saturday night from the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort (9:45 p.m., ET), rising junior middleweight Willie Nelson makes his HBO debut versus Luciano Cuello. The first time the boxing public got to see Nelson on a national stage, he was getting sent to the canvas three times by Vincent Arroyo in April of 2011, his only career loss. At that point, Nelson made two important moves: first from welterweight to his current weight class and then from Cleveland to Y Relocation and Vindication in Youngstown

Azad Championship Report - Time to Walk the Walk for Malignaggi

By Steve Kim: The verbal sparring between WBA welterweight titlist Paulie Malignaggi and Adrien Broner, who face each other this Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, has seemingly been never-ending and actually began before their names were on the dotted line. From their Twitter timelines, press gatherings and a recent teleconference, the trash talk and the insults have flown. Yeah, the gloves were off from the very beginning. By Steve Kim: This Saturday at the O2 Arena in London, England, a highly anticipated rematch takes place in the super middleweight division between Mikkel Kessler and Carl Froch (HBO, 6 p.m., ET/3 p.m. PT and 10 p.m., ET). The first time they met was back on April 24th, 2010 in Hernig, Denmark, where Kessler won a hard-fought, exciting unanimous decision in one of the better fights of Showtime’s “Super Six” series. Can Sergio Martinez Go Home?

By Gabriel Montoya: The goal in life should be to figure out what you are meant to do and then set about doing it. The lucky and hardworking persevere in this endeavor; the tests they face season rather than deter because those hopeful for greatness, like middleweight champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez, understand that attaining a life’s goal is about fighting through each challenge the journey there presents. In order to attain greatness in your calling, new challenges must constantly be met Can Sergio Martinez Go Home?

Fernando Guerrero “This is a moment of a lifetime.”

By Gabriel Montoya: Heading into his 2011 fight with Grady Brewer, middleweight contender Fernando Guerrero had it all going his way. He was 21-0 with a growing following in Salisbury, Maryland. He was fighting often both in Mississippi and Maryland and drawing well. He had TV fights and industry notice. What he didn’t have was what he got that night: a reality check surprise loss. Brewer, considered a heavy underdog, shocked Guerrero and pretty much everyone else when he stopped Guerrero... Fernando Guerrero “This is a moment of a lifetime.”

Leija Comes Full Circle

By Steve Kim: Back on September 10th, 1993, Jesse James Leija faced future Hall-of-Famer Azumah Nelson at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Leija would come up just a bit short in his bid for the WBC junior lightweight crown as he and “The Professor” fought to a draw in the first of four meetings over five years. But what Leija really remembers from that night is he fought in front of over 63,000 rabid fans, who had come to see this card and its main event, Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Pernell W Leija Comes Full Circle

By Steve Kim: Despite the touch of bronchitis that knocked Chris Arreola out of his pivotal bout against Bermane Stiverne, the card at the Hangar in Costa Mesa, California will proceed on Saturday night. Fights I’d Like to See in 2013

By Steve Kim (Photo © Miguel Salazar): So 2013 is officially upon us. And the hope for all boxing fans is that this year is as fun and entertaining as the past year where there was no shortage of memorable moments and good ol’ fashioned slugfests.
