Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

An island thing

An island thing: By Allan Cerf Particulars: Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., October 29th LIVE on Fight Network. The Story: This all Puerto-Rican battle is probably, sans those living on the boxing-crazy island...for boxing junkies only. And there’s only one outcome we ghouls, we hard-core adherents to the world’s hardest sport can hope for - a big KO. An island thing

Vasquez dominates Lartey

PITTSBURGH, PA. (Feb. 21, 2015) – Sammy Vasquez put on a show for his hometown fans in Pittsburgh, winning a near-shutout 10-round unanimous decision (99-91 twice, 100-90) over Emmanuel Lartey in the main event of ShoBox: The New Generation on Friday from CONSUL Energy Center. Vasquez (18-0, 13 KOs) entered the bout seeking his 10th consecutive knockout against an opponent who hadn’t been knocked down before and had been in the ring with two U.S. Olympians. The military veteran... Vasquez dominates Lartey

Cuellar knocks out Lopez in two rounds

By John J. Raspanti: WBA interim featherweight titleholder Jesus Cuellar wasted little time in brutalizing former two-division champion Juan Manuel Lopez in two rounds Thursday night at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Lopez said after the fight that his career was likely over. We can only hope so. Cuellar (25-1, 19 KOs) had little trouble tagging Lopez (34-5, 31 KOs) with multiple shots in the opening stanza. Lopez tried to box, but that’s not his game... Cuellar knocks out Lopez in two rounds

Alvarez chases Lara for 12 rounds before escaping with debatable win

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © German Villasenor): Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Erislandy Lara had something to prove last Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada. They had been arguing for months over who was the better fighter. So who won? Nobody. Alvarez proved that he comes to fight, but after 45 bouts, still doesn’t know how to cut off the ring. Lara can box beautifully at times, but also has a tendency to be more roadrunner than Tasmanian devil. Not that you could blame him for some of his Alvarez chases Lara for 12 rounds before escaping with debatable win

De la Hoya’s Here

By Steve Kim: Yesterday, on a cool Southern California afternoon on Olvera Street, the press tour for the July 12th bout between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Erislandy Lara, promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, kicked off. But most interesting was that the master of ceremonies for this media gathering was the “Golden Boy” himself. For years, while Oscar De la Hoya’s silhouette served as the logo of the company, Richard Schaefer was its day-to-day leader and main decision... De la Hoya’s Here

Herrera Unlucky vs. 'Swift' Garcia; Wilder Downs Scott in One

By Derek Bonnett (Photo © Tom Casino /SHOWTIME): With the careers of Miguel Cotto and Juan Manuel Lopez seemingly in their last lengths, Pennsylvanian-born Danny Garcia is grasping for recognition as a Puerto Rican champion. In spite of fighting his entire career as a "Philly fighter", Garcia looked able to fill the Puerto Rican void among the elites in this dark time for the small island which has previously produced world champions as if they were on an assembly line. Garcia’s task at hand... Herrera Unlucky vs. 'Swift' Garcia; Wilder Downs Scott in One

Is Scott Running Out of Time?

By Steve Kim: Despite an impressive looking record of 36-1-1 (13), you’ve always gotten the sense that heavyweight Malik Scott has underachieved, that he should have accomplished more by this stage of his career and in essence, he’s left money on the table. As you say this to him, he doesn’t get angry or upset. In fact, the personable Scott sees where you’re coming from. “I wouldn’t say I totally disagree with it but I would say I see why you could say that. But Is Scott Running Out of Time?

Garcia Makes Home (Away from Home) Debut

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): When Danny “Swift” Garcia makes the fourth defense of his World Boxing Association (WBA) “super” and World Boxing Council (WBC) world junior welterweight titles this weekend, it won’t be a home game for the unbeaten champion but it certainly will be a homecoming. Philadelphia-born and raised Garcia is proudly Puerto Rican as both parents were born on the island. Garcia has always thanked and praised his “P.R.” fan base and the champion... Ponce de Leon Looks to Even the Score

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): “I lost. That’s all,” is what Daniel Ponce de Leon says when you ask him about his initial match-up versus Juan Manuel Lopez in June of 2008 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. On that night, Ponce de Leon lost his WBO junior featherweight title as he was sent to the canvas twice and halted in the first round by the Puerto Rican. Perhaps he doesn’t want to recall too much of what happened that night or perhaps simply can’t. But as Ponce de Leon Looks to Even the Score

Salido, the Sacrificial Lamb?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): By virtue of having the WBO featherweight belt (which is supposedly a worthless strap to the particularly quixotic members of the boxing media), Orlando Salido with his 12 professional losses, was hand-selected by Vasyl Lomachenko and his team as their dance partner in just their second official pro fight as they attempt to win a world title in record setting fashion. ’Siri’ is by no means a great fighter, the only way he’ll get Salido, the Sacrificial Lamb?

Is It 2013 All over Again for GGG?

By Steve Kim (Image created by © Chee, MaxBoxing): All across the globe, boxing fans will be able to see Gennady Golovkin’s latest defense of his WBA middleweight title versus Osumanu Adama. Well, that is except in the good ol’ U.S. of A. Azad Championship Report - Time to Walk the Walk for Malignaggi

By Steve Kim: The verbal sparring between WBA welterweight titlist Paulie Malignaggi and Adrien Broner, who face each other this Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, has seemingly been never-ending and actually began before their names were on the dotted line. From their Twitter timelines, press gatherings and a recent teleconference, the trash talk and the insults have flown. Yeah, the gloves were off from the very beginning. Garcia and Hudson on the Fast Track

By SteveKim (Photo © K9 Photos): For nearly a full century, most conditioning programs associated with the sport of boxing consisted of fighters waking up in the early morning to go running. Road work has been around in boxing as long as the heavy bag and sparring sessions have. Azad Championship Report - Rebirth or Sacrifice for “JuanMa”?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): This Saturday night at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas (10:45 p.m., ET/PT), Juan Manuel Lopez challenges WBO featherweight titlist Mikey Garcia. There was a time not too long ago when “JuanMa” was expected to carry on the island’s lineage as the next Puerto Rican superstar, following the likes of Felix Trinidad and Miguel Cotto. Azad Championship Report - Stevenson Kronks out Dawson

By Gabriel Montoya: The origin of raw knockout power is the best mystery in boxing. We can use science to measure punching power as HBO has apparently been using a device under the fighter’s wraps to measure this very thing for some time now from what I am told. Pure knockout power can be harnessed with solid fighting technique to be sure. The straighter the shot, the better the torque, snap and speed with which it the punch lands. But raw knockout power - and why some have it and... Azad Championship Report - Stevenson Kronks out Dawson

The 2013 Summer Preview

The Future of Puerto Rico?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Peter Amador / Top Rank): Right now, there is a bit of a vacuum in Puerto Rican boxing. This proud island, which treats the sport as it’s national pastime, has had a glorious succession of prizefighters that has seen the likes of Wilfredo Gomez, Felix Trinidad and Miguel Cotto become cultural icons. But with Cotto clearly on the back nine of his career and Juan Manuel Lopez failing to living up to expectations, a void currently exists. Currently, there is just one major The Future of Puerto Rico?
