Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Do We Plead for a Fifth?

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): It was a successful Forum homecoming for future Hall-of-Famer Juan Manuel Marquez as he defeated the rugged Mike Alvarado in front of 12,090 mostly Mexican partisans who cheered his every move. He’s come a long way from being third banana to the likes of countrymen Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera and being branded as just a safe, cautious counterpuncher. Alvarado was game but simply outgunned by the master from Mexico City, who was... Do We Plead for a Fifth?

To Extend or not to Extend?

By Steve Kim: Early this week, Top Rank Promotions President Todd duBoef was summoned out of the bullpen to try and salvage the proposed bout between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Gennady Golovkin, tentatively taking place on July 19th at the Forum in Los Angeles. It was a fight boxing fans were salivating over and everyone involved in the negotiations believed this was a deal that would eventually get done... To Extend or not to Extend?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): After having his last three bouts broadcast beneath the bright lights of HBO, lightweight contender Terence Crawford, sees himself in Glasgow, Scotland in his first attempt at a world title against WBO beltholder Ricky Burns at the Scottish Exhibition Centre. But this isn’t the first time Crawford has had to break out his passport to box. He recalls going to Venezuela as an amateur and according to Crawford, his trip overseas... Crawford Hits the Road

Ivan Redkach vs. Tony Luis

There is a notion in boxing that the valuable skill of pure power is something you are either born with or you’ll never have. Watch Ivan Redkach for just one round and that pure power is evident. When he lands a punch his opponent’s demeanor immediately changes. If he lands flush his opponents are disconnected from their senses. Redkach’s power and ferocity in the ring are downright scary, leading many boxing insiders to believe that it won’t be lon Ivan Redkach vs. Tony Luis

2014 Boxing Resolutions

By Steve Kim: It never fails; does it? The first month or so into the New Year, you see people you’ve never seen working out at the gym. They are the ones who make New Year’s resolutions to start working out and get back into shape and as soon as January 2nd rolls around, they become Jack Lalanne all of a sudden. You wouldn’t mind them so much but the problem is they cause overcrowding in the workout areas and you quickly lose patience with them as they take three minutes between preacher 2014 Boxing Resolutions

Malignaggi vs. the Fanboys

By Steve Kim: At the opening press conference to formally announce this weekend’s bout at the Barclays Center (Showtime, 8 p.m., ET) in Brooklyn between Paulie Malignaggi and Zab Judah, the always talkative Malignaggi let loose a verbal barrage, not at his neighborhood rival but the media. And for a fighter with just seven knockouts to his credit in 37 professional outings (where he has notched a record of 32-5), it’s about as hard as he’s ever hit. Yeah, he’s not necessarily Malignaggi vs. the Fanboys

Altitude Adjustment

By Steve Kim: Ruslan Provodnikov faces Mike Alvarado on Saturday night (HBO 9:45 p.m., ET/PT) at the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado, just a few miles from the “Mile High City” of Denver. Alvarado is a native of the 303 while Provodnikov hails from Russia. For many years, as teams have come to play the hometown Broncos, there is always the conjecture and talk of having to adjust to the high altitude. Now it’s Provodnikov’s turn to deal with this issue. For years, boxers have Altitude Adjustment

Marquez Turns the Page

By Steve Kim: Juan Manuel Marquez will be paired up with Tim Bradley for the latter’s WBO welterweight title at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas this Saturday night. Marquez will forever be linked to one Manny Pacquiao, with whom he engaged in a historic four-fight rivalry. Their most recent meeting took place in December, ending with Marquez exorcising the demons of the past by leaving the fabled “Pac-Man” face-down and lifeless on the canvas with a perfectly timed counter right hand... Porter vs. Diaz: The Sequel

By Bill Tibbs (Image poster by Chee, MaxBoxing): When undefeated welterweight prospect Shawn Porter steps in the ring on September 12th (Fox Sports 2 Network) he will be looking to avenge the 1 career blemish on his undefeated record, that being a 10 round draw with Coachella, California’s Julio Diaz from their December 2012 bout. That being said, Porter’s task may be a lot easier said than done. A quick glance at Diaz’s last 4 fights sees him at 2-1-1, but many boxing pundits... Porter vs. Diaz: The Sequel

Azad Championship Report - How Does Mares Stack Up?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Gene Blevins - Hoganphotos /Golden Boy Promotions): When you start talking about the elite of boxing, usually Floyd Mayweather, Andre Ward, Juan Manuel Marquez and Sergio Martinez are the names thrown around first and foremost. Mares Builds More Momentum

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos, MaxBoxing): For WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares - who defends his title against Jhonny Gonzalez this Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California (Showtime, 10:30 p.m., ET/7:30 p.m., PT) - 2013 has been an eventful year. It actually began with a very public back-and-forthing on Twitter between Mares and Nonito Donaire over a fight that was shelved because of the ongoing “Cold War” between Golden Boy and Top Rank... The Human Highlight Reel

By Anson Wainwright (Photo © Golden Boy Promotions): Over the past decade or so, we’ve become accustomed to witnessing the likes of Carl Froch, Erik Morales, Brandon Rios and Company thrilling us regularly. The aforementioned trio are rarely if ever in anything other than barnburners. They’re can’t-miss-TV. Remember the Alamo(dome)

By Steve Kim (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): I’ll say this right now, if I lived in San Antonio I’d be 30 pounds heavier. Because while Tex-Mex cuisine is to be found everywhere, locating an LA Fitness or 24 Hour Fitness is harder to find than someone wearing a Derek Fisher jersey in this city. Seriously, I was there from late Wednesday afternoon to Sunday and I literally didn’t see one workout facility during my stay there. I spent plenty of time at the famed Riverwalk and Remember the Alamo(dome)

Leija Comes Full Circle

By Steve Kim: Back on September 10th, 1993, Jesse James Leija faced future Hall-of-Famer Azumah Nelson at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Leija would come up just a bit short in his bid for the WBC junior lightweight crown as he and “The Professor” fought to a draw in the first of four meetings over five years. But what Leija really remembers from that night is he fought in front of over 63,000 rabid fans, who had come to see this card and its main event, Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Pernell W Leija Comes Full Circle

Austin Trout Hits the Road (Again)

By Steve Kim: On Saturday night from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, one of the year’s most anticipated events takes place between junior middleweight beltholders Austin Trout and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Between 35,000-to-40,000 fans are expected to be in the building but it wasn’t all that long ago when Trout was headlining on a much smaller stage. Back in November of 2011, Trout made his Showtime debut against the forgettable Frank LoPorto at Cohen Stadium in El Paso, Texas in front Austin Trout Hits the Road (Again)

The Return of the Baby Bull

By Steve Kim: On the night of December 8th, near the entrance of the MGM Grand Garden Arena, this reporter was picking up his ringside credential for the fourth chapter of the rivalry between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. At the time, also at the will call area just happened to be one Juan Diaz, who I had not seen for quite awhile. Diaz, a former unified lightweight champion, was retired for a couple of years and was in town to enjoy the festivities. Coming off a round of golf with The Return of the Baby Bull

Azad Championship Report - Canelo Takes Charge

By Steve Kim: In a business that must prepare for life without the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in the very near future, it’s important that boxing develops future marquee attractions. While there are many individuals who hold the designation of “champion” by virtue of a sanctioning body title, rarer are those who have genuinely earned the right to call themselves the best in a division, the truly elite who are listed among arbitrary pound-for-pound lists. Azad Championship Report: Paulie Malignaggi Won’t Go Away

By Thomas Hauser (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): On July 7, 2001, Paulie Malignaggi made his pro debut at KeySpan Park in Brooklyn. Even then, he had a mouth. Two days before the fight, he told Tom Gerbasi, “I’m boxing’s next superstar. Paulie Malignaggi is going to make it up the ladder quickly. I’m going to win multiple titles. Mora Has Texas-Sized Indigestion

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): By Monday afternoon, Sergio Mora still hadn’t fully come to grips or digested what had taken place this past weekend at the Illusions Theater in San Antonio, Texas. Showtime Adds Appetizer and Dessert

By Steve Kim: One of the (many) pet peeves of boxing fans is that in recent years, broadcasts on HBO or Showtime have featured just one live bout. There are many reasons for this - mostly having to do with their budgets. But think about it; even a full 12-round fight that goes the distance lasts less than a full hour. It’s almost like going to a fancy... Showtime Adds Appetizer and Dessert

A Quick Look at Some Modern-Day Warriors

By Anson Wainwright: I consider every person who steps into the squared circle a warrior; each and every one of them has my utmost respect. However, certain fighters qualify more than others.
