Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Pacquiao Continues Pay Per View Nonsense

Pacquiao Continues Pay Per View Nonsense

By Matthew Hurley: Now that Manny Pacquiao versus Chris Algieri is a done deal, the PacMan officially revealed himself to be Bob Arum’s puppet on a string. No, this is not as bad as Colonel Tom Parker ripping apart his only client Elvis Presley over nearly twenty-one years but it begs the question, who would Manny be fighting on November 22 had he not signed a contract extension through 2016? Certainly not Algieri... Pacquiao Continues Pay Per View Nonsense

The Mark Twain of Boxing

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): This time around at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, there was no controversy after Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley went 12 hard, competitive rounds. After the official scorecards were read, Bradley, who had infuriated the masses by insisting he had absolutely won their first match-up in 2012, went over to the... The Mark Twain of Boxing

Make-up Call?

By Steve Kim: Despite Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley squaring off back in June of 2012, in the end, they weren’t the two most talked-about individuals involved. That distinction went to Duane Ford and CJ Ross. The two ringside judges were in the vast minority by scoring the fight for the “Desert Storm” in what was considered the 874th black eye for boxing and about the 43rd time the sport died. Alas... The Use and (Potential) Abuse of Epinephrine in Boxing

By Gabriel Montoya: When the corner work of strength-and-conditioning coach Alex Ariza was questioned by boxing fans who began circulating video of his work (via social media) between rounds 11 and 12 of the Marcos Maidana vs. Adrien Broner fight, the Texas Department of Licensing announced it would launch an investigation into the incident. The fight was not drug-tested by the state of Texas but instead by USADA. Azad Championship Report: Cotto’s Choice

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): For years, boxers have doubled as promoters. More often than not, it’s a ceremonial distinction given to successfully branded boxers who want a shelter for their financial storms. It’s a perfectly legit practice, making it easier for fighter to handle taxes and pay employees as any smart business would. But even though it is not uncommon to see an MP, Lion or Marquez... Azad Championship Report: Trout Goes Upstream to Face Cotto

By Steve Kim: On the night of June 2nd at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, Austin Trout successfully defended his WBA junior middleweight title by easily outpointing Delvin Rodriguez over 12 rounds. But while he retained his crown, the fight itself was rather, shall we say...non-descript (to put it charitably)? The harshest of observers would say it was a yawner. The type of fight which if you were in attendance, you left your seat to grab a beer or rather dispose of the beer you Azad Championship Report: Trout Goes Upstream to Face Cotto

Remembering

By Gabriel Montoya: I forgot to do my spring cleaning so I’m doing it now. In the course of my yearly closet purge, I came across a micro-cassette I had been looking for going on 5 years. It was simply labeled “Goossen/Chico/Shaw.” The day I recorded this on my then-new Radio Shack microcassette recorder was Thursday June 1, 2006; the final press conference for Diego “Chico” Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo 3. It was my first time in Las Vegas and I had landed just as the press conference was Remembering

Azad Championship Report: Grading the Cards

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): In case you haven’t heard - and there’s almost no way you couldn’t have - there are competing shows taking place this Saturday night from the MGM Grand and the Thomas and Mack Center, just a few blocks from each other in “Sin City,” in the latest chapter in the Cold War between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank. Azad Championship Report - The Resurrection (?) Manny Pacquiao

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): Last November, Manny Pacquiao faced Juan Manuel Marquez in what should have been the finishing touch on a classic trilogy. Cotto-Margarito II is a Garden Party

By Steve Kim: When Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito meet again on the night of December 3rd, it will take place at the famed Madison Square Garden in New York, one of the most historic buildings in all the world and at one time, the Mecca of professional boxing. On Wednesday afternoon, officials from Top Rank wrapped up the deal. There was a chance that this rematch was going back out west to Las Vegas, where the two hooked up in a memorable battle at the MGM Grand in the summer of 2008. Cotto-Margarito II is a Garden Party

Amir Khan Attempts to Break on Through vs. Zab Judah

By Gabriel Montoya: Three years and eight fights ago, WBA junior welterweight titleholder Amir “King” Khan, 25-1 (17), was knocked out by unheralded Breidis Prescott. Six fights ago, the pride of Bolton, UK, switched his operation to the US. Sometimes When They Touch (Gloves, Over and Over Again)

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): On Saturday night at a packed MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, we saw the rarest of fights involving Manny Pacquiao, who easily dispatched Shane Mosley over 12 rounds. It was a bout that was as one-sided as the odds reflected. From the very onset, Mosley was never in the fight. But while Pacquiao fights, for the most part, have been blowouts in recent years they were affairs that entertained the masses... Sometimes When They Touch (Gloves, Over and Over Again)

Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley: Same Fight, Different Opponent

By Gabriel Montoya: In name, Manny Pacquiao’s last five opponents are a veritable who’s who of the welterweight and junior welter divisions in Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey, and Antonio Margarito. On paper, that is a helluva résumé. In reality, the fights have been more of the showcase variety on some level. Hatton was a couple fights removed from his first knockout loss. The Island: Part Three- The Mount Rushmore of Puerto Rico

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): Miguel Cotto had the distinction of becoming Puerto Rico’s 50th world champion. It’s an astounding number given that the island’s population is just fewer than four million and an estimated two million Puerto Ricans live in the United States. It’s been stated before that, per-capita, Puerto Rico is perhaps the most successful boxing nation in the world. Judging by these figures, it’s hard to argue... Now on to Margarito…

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): As Antonio Margarito walked up to the microphone on Saturday night after Miguel Cotto’s 12th round stoppage of Ricardo Mayorga at the MGM Grand- at the insistence of promoter Bob Arum- you could feel the tension and testiness between he and the Puerto Rican star as they quickly shook hands, never really making eye contact with each other. Rios Chops Wood at the Palms

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): After four rounds, it was a mismatch. What was supposed to be an entertaining back-and-forth affair between WBA lightweight titlist Miguel Acosta and challenger Brandon Rios was a one-sided drubbing. Using deft movement and his long arcing punches, Acosta had not only outboxed Rios but stunned him with a series of right hands and a particular body punch that... Rios Chops Wood at the Palms
