Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

What Will Become The Moment?

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): On Saturday, Floyd Mayweather Jr., the top star in boxing, will once again return to the ring and screens across the world. In movie theaters, bars and on closed-circuit televisions, “Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana: The Moment” is upon us. But what is it? What exactly is “The Moment?” Is it “The Moment” Mayweather, who doubles as the world’s best matchmaker, picks the wrong prepackaged foe? Marcos Maidana, 35-3 (31)... What Will Become The Moment?

Random Thoughts on a Saturday Night

By Steve Kim (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): There was plenty of boxing programming on this Saturday from Showtime’s tripleheader in our nation’s capital, the HBO rebroadcast of Manny Pacquiao-Tim Bradley II, “Solo Boxeo” on UniMas and a fight card from the U.K. on AWE to “The Fight Game with Jim Lampley,” “All Access: Floyd Mayweather-Marcos Maidana” and “Road to Juan Manuel Marquez-Mike Alvarado.” Some random thoughts on what was shown this past weekend... Pacquiao and Rios Issue Bomb Threat

By Bill Tibbs (Photos © Chris Farina / Top Rank): When Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao and Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios lock horns on Saturday at the Cotai Arena at the Venetian Resort in Macao, China, it is hard to imagine this bout being anything but “Bombs Away” in an all-action slugfest. Pacquiao enters the “Clash at Cotai” coming off a serious (“Ya coulda counted to 50”), sixth round KO loss at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez last December and Rios himself has engaged in a series of punishing wars... Brandon Rios: "I wish it was fifteen rounds"

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank) The last time newly minted junior welterweight Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios, 30-0-1, 22 knockouts, fought at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA was July 9, 2011 against Urbano Antillon. It would be the high water mark of the 26 year-old Rios’ lightweight title run. Three rounds of controlled chaos mainlined straight into every boxing junkie’s veins. For those that saw it live, it was yet another mini-classic at the best venue in SoCal for fighting. Brandon Rios: "I wish it was fifteen rounds"

Rios/Alvarado/Gatti: What Defines Greatness?

By Gabriel Montoya: While the question of who will come out victorious won’t be answered until somewhere around 8 p.m. on Saturday night in Carson, CA’s Home Depot Center, that Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios vs. “Mile High” Mike Alvarado has potential to be something special is a certainty. Alvarado and Rios are two hardnosed, honest men who give no quarter and take no sh*t. If boxing is art, these men are Jackson Pollock, splattering their violence every which way upon Rios/Alvarado/Gatti: What Defines Greatness?

Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios: “This is my job and I love it”

The Buzz for Antonio Orozco

By Steve Kim: It was just a couple of weekends ago that a bevy of prospects/suspects went down in flames.
