Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Ivan Redkach vs. Tony Luis

There is a notion in boxing that the valuable skill of pure power is something you are either born with or you’ll never have. Watch Ivan Redkach for just one round and that pure power is evident. When he lands a punch his opponent’s demeanor immediately changes. If he lands flush his opponents are disconnected from their senses. Redkach’s power and ferocity in the ring are downright scary, leading many boxing insiders to believe that it won’t be lon Ivan Redkach vs. Tony Luis

Azad Championship Report - Can Golovkin Be a Star?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Will Hart / K2): Tonight, Gennady Golovkin faces the respected Matthew Macklin at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods Resort as the main event on HBO’s Boxing After Dark (9:45 p.m., ET/PT). It’s a cozy setting (which more cynical observers would say is another way of saying “small”) and while Golovkin is the heavy betting favorite, Macklin will have the most amount of fans in the venue. But Tom Loeffler, managing director of K2 Promotions, believes Golovkin is Azad Championship Report - Can Golovkin Be a Star?

The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One

By Steve Kim: Another year has come and passed and it was another 12-month period where we didn’t see Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather square off. And guess what? It was actually still a very eventful and entertaining year for the sport of boxing, regardless. Better yet, it wasn’t completely overtaken by the MMA! (OK, I’m being facetious there.) But seriously, 2012 was a good one for the sport of boxing and its followers. Here’s a look back at what took place this The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): In what has become more and more of an occurrence in the modern era of boxing, another fighter was unable to make weight for a title fight. The Hardest Road

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): Not unlike any other sport, boxing isn’t boxing without statistics. By Marty Mulcahey: It takes a special pair of fighters to headline a PPV card below the bantamweight division. Ivan Calderon earned that status during the course of a seven-year title run and Giovani Segura usurped that prestige by knocking out Calderon in Puerto Rico. The Top Rank/Pacquiao Stimulus Package for Las Vegas

By Steve Kim (Photo © Howard Schatz): From January 22nd (with the 2011 premiere of “Top Rank Live” from the Texas Station Casino) to May 7th at the MGM Grand when Manny Pacquiao faces Shane Mosley, a bulk of Top Rank’s first half-of-2011 schedule takes place in Las Vegas. The 2010 K9 Awards: Part One

By Steve Kim (Photo © Howard Schatz): Yes, folks, another year has come and gone (Where does the time go?) and it’s at this time of the year, before we move forward, that we take one last look at what took place in 2010 in the game of boxing. This was a year that will forever be defined by a fight that did not take place (and may never) in Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather and a strong final push by the sport of boxing. I Said THAT?! The 2010 Preview Review: Part Two

By Marty Mulcahey: In Part One of the annual preview review, I lamented how journalists making predictions for 2011 are certain in the knowledge that few readers will remember what they wrote in a year’s time. Right Now, It Shouldn’t Happen in Vegas or Stay in Vegas

The Weekend TV Cheat Sheet

By Marty Mulcahey: This weekend’s boxing schedule endured more last-minute cancelations, changes, and substitutions than the first round of Showtime’s “Super Six” tourney. HBO and the State of Boxing – Part One

By Thomas Hauser: There was a time when the “Sweet Science” was governed by the axiom, “As the heavyweight division goes, so goes boxing.” Now, in the United States, the rule of thumb is, “As HBO goes, so goes boxing.” No network has ever been associated with a sport to the degree that HBO is associated with boxing. The Thursday/Friday TV Cheat Sheet

By Marty Mulcahey: The weekend boxing action gets off to an early start tonight; with FOX Sports airing the club-level fights emanating from L.A’s Nokia Theater-turned-nightclub. The shows have evolved from bad mismatches to C-level “ShoBox” events, where a young prospect is matched with a beatable trial horse with one hazardous asset that has to be navigated.
