Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One

By Steve Kim: Another year has come and passed and it was another 12-month period where we didn’t see Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather square off. And guess what? It was actually still a very eventful and entertaining year for the sport of boxing, regardless. Better yet, it wasn’t completely overtaken by the MMA! (OK, I’m being facetious there.) But seriously, 2012 was a good one for the sport of boxing and its followers. Here’s a look back at what took place this The 2013 K9 Awards: Part One

Donaire Goes Back to His Roots

Steve Kim: After enjoying a string of dominant wins in somewhat uneven performances in his last three outings, Nonito Donaire, who essentially tried training himself in Las Vegas (where he now resides), is now firmly entrenched back in San Carlos, California (near the Bay Area) and is back with his team of Brian Schwartz, Mike Bazzel, Remi Korchemny and Victor Conte. Yeah, the results against Omar Narvaez, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. and Jeffrey Mathebula are hard to argue against but the manner in Donaire Goes Back to His Roots

Can Donaire Earn Style Points?

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): In a couple of weeks, a highly anticipated bout takes place between IBF/WBO junior featherweight champion Nonito Donaire and Toshiaki Nishioka (who held the WBC belt with distinction for several years) at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California (headlining on HBO). However, to many, that night’s main event will be the junior welterweight contest featuring Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado. The reason is simple; that match-up is almost guaranteed... The Soapbox

By Steve Kim: I’ve always asserted that I converse and have dialogue with some of the most intelligent boxing fans on the planet (excluding those who “Blame Bob,” compile pound-for-pound lists and actually believe the eradication of the sanctioning bodies would be some sort of wholesale panacea for what ails the boxing business). And I’ve always maintained that those who truly support the business by actually going to... The Soapbox

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): This past weekend, I was ringside at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California where a “Boxing After Dark” doubleheader was staged that saw Nonito Donaire defeat Jeffrey Mathebula (to consolidate the WBO and IBF junior featherweight titles) and Kelly Pavlik... By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): On the night of February 19th, 2011, Nonito Donaire- who faces Jeffrey Mathebula tonight at the Home Depot Center in a 122-pound unification tilt- became perhaps the most buzzworthy fighter in the sport not named Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather. On this night, he... Donaire Looks to Recapture Buzz

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): The road to glory and riches in boxing is always hard and very often unusual. Showtime Adds Appetizer and Dessert

By Steve Kim: One of the (many) pet peeves of boxing fans is that in recent years, broadcasts on HBO or Showtime have featured just one live bout. There are many reasons for this - mostly having to do with their budgets. But think about it; even a full 12-round fight that goes the distance lasts less than a full hour. It’s almost like going to a fancy... Showtime Adds Appetizer and Dessert

Do We Have a Thaw?

By Steve Kim: It’s not clear yet who Juan Manuel Marquez will face on July 14th at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas but all indications are the powers-that-be are focusing on Erik Morales. The story within the story is that Marquez is ostensibly promoted by Top Rank (officially, he is under the auspices of Zanfer Promotions) and Morales, who for years worked with Bob Arum’s company, is now associated with Golden Boy. Yeah, Marquez-Morales is... Do We Have a Thaw?

Not Exactly an “Oktoberfest” for Boxing

By Steve Kim: There’s been a lot of entertaining stuff on HBO in October. I’ve enjoyed “Boardwalk Empire” (which, for my money, might soon be up there with “The Sopranos” or “The Wire” in due time). It’s great to have Bill Maher back; no matter what your political philosophy is, this show is always good for few laughs. And Kenny Powers, well, that’s who I want to be when I grow up. But there is something missing from my... Not Exactly an “Oktoberfest” for Boxing

Weekend TV Cheat Sheet

By Marty Mulcahey: It is a strangely formatted weekend for boxing fans. There are no events on Friday night, and the number of choices for Saturday make it a challenge to view all in their entirety. ESPN2 presents a special Saturday night telecast, instead of the usual Friday night, so adjust your DVR or TiVo accordingly. There are four shows in all; sadly one of them is the Holyfield – Botha PPV, but aside from the Celestino Caballero-Daud Yordan fight, they lack intrigue. Thankfully, HBO is Weekend TV Cheat Sheet

Preview and Predictions for 2010

By Martin Mulcahey: Maxboxing is the most progressive boxing site in cyberspace. This means instead of looking back upon a great 2009, I want to look ahead to what should be another stellar year for boxing below the heavyweight division. Getting a jump on the competition also allows me to claim all other boxing writers are ripping off my opinions and predictions..., at least the ones I get right. In the next three installments I will present an overview of every weight class. For each division I Preview and Predictions for 2010

Because No One Demanded it…

By Cotoye Duran: Back when Yours Truly was but a mere pup, Mama and Papa Coyote would ask me every year around the holidays to make a list of the things I wanted for Christmas. It was never easy because, even to this day, I thought asking for gifts was a speck pretentious. If I was good, I figured my good deeds wouldn’t go unnoticed and Mr. Kringle would merely give me what he thought I deserved (and I have a deep respect for Santa.
