Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Kovalev stops Pascal after seven brutal rounds

By John J. Raspanti: Light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev retained his IBF, WBO and WBA titles by bludgeoning former champion Jean Pascal into submission at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada Saturday night. The end came when trainer Freddie Roach informed Pascal after round seven that he was calling it a night. Unlike his first go-around with Kovalev at the same arena ten months ago, which was stopped in round eight, Pascal didn’t complain. Kovalev (29-0-1, 26 KOs) floored P Kovalev stops Pascal after seven brutal rounds

Pascal rewarded with rematch against Kovalev, but will he regret it?

By John J. Raspanti: On January 30th, Jean Pascal will meet Sergey Kovalev for the second time in a boxing ring. Last year Kovalev, the WBA, IBF, and WBO light heavyweight titleholder, stopped former champion Pascal in Round eight at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. The call for a rematch was hardly deafening. Kovalev was comfortably ahead on the judges’ scorecards at the time of the stoppage. He floored Pascal for the first time in his career and hurt him on numerous occasions... Pascal rewarded with rematch against Kovalev, but will he regret it?

Ward to fight Brand on November 21

By John J. Raspanti: Super middleweight champion Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) will make his debut in the light heavyweight division when he faces Alexander Brand (24-1, 19 KOs) November 21 on the undercard of the pay-per-view showdown between Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, according to ESPN. Ward, 31, was last seen in the ring this past June, dispatching over-matched Englishmen Paul Smith in nine one-sided rounds. The fight was Ward’ Ward to fight Brand on November 21

Bute returns after long layoff to stop Di Luisa

By John J. Raspanti: After disposing of little-known Italian Andrea Di Luisa in the fourth round last Saturday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal, CN., former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute shouted, “I’m back.” But is he? Bute, 35, hasn’t been the same fighter since being steamrolled by Carl Froch in May 2012. Froch not only beat the tar out of the transplanted Romanian, he took away his mojo. Immediately after the match, Bute talked rematch, but his words rung hollow, especially Bute returns after long layoff to stop Di Luisa

On the Move: MaxBoxing World Rankings 7-28-15

By Derek Bonnett: One of the most consistent aspects of professional boxing is erratic scoring. Not every bad scoring job yields a victory to the wrong fighter, but a controversial winner certainly gets boxing aficionados fired up to critique the work of a judge. This weekend, like so many, saw three judges in unison deliver a poor verdict to the wrong fighter, screwing over a rising prospect. It almost could have been predicted. Prior to his bout with Yuniesky Gonzalez, Jean Pascal was pretty On the Move: MaxBoxing World Rankings 7-28-15

Kovalev demolishes Mohammedi in three rounds

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © David Spagnolo, Main Events): Coming off the biggest victory of his career, an eighth round stoppage of former champion Jean Pascal four months ago, WBO, WBA and IBF light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev admitted that staying focused against 50-1 underdog Nadjib Mohammedi was a challenge. In the end it made no difference, as Kovalev (28-0-1, 25 KOs) stopped Mohammedi (37-4, 23 KOs) in round three Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Events... The Russian keeps on Krush'in

By Jason Gonzalez at ringside (Photo © David Spagnolo, Main Events): Montréal, QC - Returning to the squared circle, just 4 months removed from the biggest victory of his career, the unified (WBO, WBA, and IBF) light heavyweight champion, Sergey “The Krusher” Kovalev, of Chelyabinsk, Russia was back to his winning ways. The 31-year-old improved to 27-0-1, (24) further tightening his grip on the 175 pound division. Kovalev scored a sensational eighth round technical knockout over former... Sergey Kovalev stops Jean Pascal in exciting slugfest

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © David Spagnolo, Main Events): IBF, WBA and WBO champion Sergey Kovalev continued his march through the light heavyweight division by stopping former WBC titleholder Jean Pascal in round eight Saturday night at a rocking Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The opening stanza revealed the differences in styles between the two fighters. Pascal is a boxer in an unorthodox way. Kovalev (27-0-1, 24 KOs) can flat out punch. Pascal (29-3, 17 KOs) shot his jab and Sergey Kovalev stops Jean Pascal in exciting slugfest

On the Move: MaxBoxing World Rankings 3-9-15

By Derek Bonnett: For once, I am very glad to be wrong. Going into Amnat Ruenroeng’s defense of the IBF flyweight title against Zou Shiming, I did not see much hope for the champion retaining his title in Macao, China. For some time now, I have been proclaiming the Chinese boxing celebrity as "Too Big To Fail" spoofing the economic theory that some financial institutions need government bailouts to avoid crumbling and thus causing even greater repercussions to the entire system at large... MaxBoxing's Fighter of the Year for 2014 is…

By John J. Raspanti: There were a lot of great candidates for MaxBoxing’s Fighter of the Year. Such as... Terence Crawford (25-0, 17 KOs) had a phenomenal 2014. In March, Crawford, of Omaha, Neb., traveled to Glasgow, Scotland to defeat hometown hero Ricky Burns. He returned to Omaha three months later and stopped talented Yuriorkis Gamboa in the ninth round of a thrilling bout. Pascal Risks No.1 Ranking Against 'The Beast'

Former WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (29-2-1, 17 KOs) risks his No. 1 ranking this Saturday night against Argentine boxer Roberto "The Beast" Bolonti (35-3, 24 KOs) in the 10-round main event at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. Bolonti was originally scheduled to fight Lucian Bute but he was forced to pull out of the fight with a back injury and Pascal was supposed to fight Donovan George... Weekend combinations: Kovalev overwhelms Hopkins, Ali upends Abregu

By John J. Raspanti: It would be easy to write that Sergey Kovalev’s dominating victory over Bernard Hopkins was perpetuated by Hopkins suddenly getting old during the fight. Easy, but not exactly accurate. First off, Hopkins IS old. He’s two months shy of his fiftieth birthday, but what Kovalev did last Saturday night in Atlantic City, NJ, was something no other fighter in recent memory had been able to accomplish. He made Hopkins fight like an old man... Weekend combinations: Kovalev overwhelms Hopkins, Ali upends Abregu

“The Alien” meets “The Krusher”

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © Hogan Photos / Golden Boy) :“Sounds like a damn monster movie” - Apollo Creed. Their nicknames might suggest a world wrestling event, but on November 8 in Atlantic City, NJ, future Hall of Famer- Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins faces powerful Russian, Sergey “The Krusher” Kovalev, in light heavyweight unification fight. Why Hopkins is fighting Kovalev

Why Hopkins is fighting Kovalev

By Vikram Birring (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): Many years ago, Bernard Hopkins was an afterthought in boxing at the championship level. He lost two close decisions to Jermain Taylor, in which he saved his energy until the final rounds and mounted furious rallies, but gave up too many early ones to win on the scorecards. He claimed that the weight hindered his energy amount, not his age; at the time he was forty, ancient in boxing terms. So he moved up to 175 pounds, to face... Why Hopkins is fighting Kovalev

Froch-Groves War at Wembley on May 31

By Bill Tibbs: On May 31, a raucous Wembley Stadium in England will be rocking when the rematch between Carl Froch, 32-2 (23), and George Groves, 19-1 (15), lights up London. The iconic soccer stadium should be as heated and lively as the fight between the two United Kingdom brawlers. The first fight ended in a somewhat controversial fashion and Groves is out to prove the stoppage, deemed too quick by some, was just that. Froch will look to erase any “controversy” tag from their first... Froch-Groves War at Wembley on May 31

Roach Reflects on Pacquiao’s Victory

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): Noted trainer Freddie Roach is already back to his daily grind at the gym. On Tuesday afternoon at the downstairs portion of the Wild Card Boxing Club (a Laundromat in a former life), he had finished up his day’s work with Ruslan Provodnikov (who faces Chris Algieri on June 14th) and was awaiting the arrival of Miguel Cotto (who faces middleweight king Sergio Martinez on June 7th). A Complicated Legacy

By Steve Kim: News spread on Thursday evening that after a long illness, longtime World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman passed away at the age of 82. His death left a myriad of responses ranging from sadness to jubilation, depending on the point of view you had on the man. Like most everything in life, describing his impact and legacy isn’t as simple as black and white; there is a deep gray area most aren’t willing to accept. Pascal Betters Bute, Takam Draws against Perez

By Derek Bonnett: Jean Pascal and Lucian Bute finally made it into the ring with one another after the evenly matched light heavyweights endured a lengthy postponement of their scheduled May 25 bout after a hand operation sidelined Bute, a Canadian-based Romanian. The Canadian-based Haitian, Pascal, kept busy making easy work of George Blades in September. Bute has fought only once since his crushing defeat at the hands of Carl Froch and that was a disputed win over Denis Grachev. The experts Pascal Betters Bute, Takam Draws against Perez

Is the Bute Bubble About to Burst?

By Steve Kim: Tonight at the Bell Centre, a Montreal showdown takes place between Jean Pascal and Lucian Bute. And for Bute, much more than the NABF light heavyweight title or city bragging rights are on the line. Simply put, for the 33-year-old native of Romania, this is a referendum on his whole career. It wasn’t all that long ago when Bute was one of the premier attractions in all of boxing and the franchise fighter of Montreal. By Steve Kim: Yvon Michel, whose company, GYM is staging this tomorrow night’s contest between Jean Pascal and Lucian Bute, has had a full itinerary the past several weeks and days leading into this promotion, culminating this weekend at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. But Michel doesn’t mind one bit. When you remind him that he’s had a busy week, he corrects you by stating it’s actually, “a good week.” He has reason to feel this way.
