Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

By Marty Mulcahey (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): HBO is stepping up to host the first major fight card of the year - a tripleheader world title bill no less –providing added luster by staging the event at the revered Madison Square Garden. They are putting checkmarks by some of the important categories featuring a Mexico vs. Puerto Rico clash, a potentially great middleweight with knockout power in both hands and a fast-rising American star of Hispanic heritage. I Said That? A 2012 Preview Review: Part Two

By Marty Mulcahey: In Part One of the annual “Preview Review,” I lamented journalists making predictions in 2012 certain in the knowledge that few readers will remember what was penned 365 days ago. To write for Maxboxing is to be held to a higher standard. To that end, I venture back in time to review my predictions for 2012, a yearly ritual of evaluating choices that fluctuates between self-abuse and narcissism. A Conversation with Nacho Beristain: Part Three

By Gabriel Montoya: As the evening wound down at Café Slow Down, Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain pulled fewer and fewer punches. Some of those punches thrown are here. Nonito Donaire Dares to Dethrone the King

By Ryan Maquiñana (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): At the Undisputed Gym in San Carlos, Calif., the heavy bag suffers a princely beating at the hands of four different legends in one night. “Here’s Mike Tyson,” says bantamweight Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire, as he pulverizes the bag with blazing double left hooks. “Bap-bap! The Weekend TV Cheat Sheet: Part Two

Marty Mulcahey: Last night presented boxing fans with quantity as TV networks gave young prospects Fernando Guerrero, Juan Velasquez, and Alex Perez a turn in the spotlight. Tonight there are fewer fights on television, four featured bouts vice seven but the quality of boxers is ratcheted up immensely with the inclusion of borderline pound-for-pound candidates Timothy Bradley and Fernando Montiel. Preview and Predictions for 2010

By Martin Mulcahey: Maxboxing is the most progressive boxing site in cyberspace. This means instead of looking back upon a great 2009, I want to look ahead to what should be another stellar year for boxing below the heavyweight division. Getting a jump on the competition also allows me to claim all other boxing writers are ripping off my opinions and predictions..., at least the ones I get right.
