Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Vetyeka: the Beginning of the End for Donaire?

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): On Saturday in Macao, China, Nonito Donaire squares off with WBA featherweight champion Simpiwe Vetyeka, 26-2 (16). The fight is for more than a belt. Donaire’s career as an elite, TV fighter may be on the line. It wasn’t always like this. Three years ago, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, 32-2 (21), was at the peak of his career. He’d stopped Fernando Montiel in spectacular fashion and quickly rose on media... Leo on Cruz Control

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © K9 Photos): Tomorrow night, Leo Santa Cruz and Cristian Mijares will do battle at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada for champion Santa Cruz’s World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight title. Mijares, 49-7-2 (24), looks to come in and be the first to add an “L” to the popular champion’s résumé. Meanwhile, Santa Cruz will look to remain undefeated in the second defense of the title he won in August of 2013. The always smiling, Rosemead, California resident Santa C Leo on Cruz Control

Azad Championship Report - Terrazas Hopes to Open Doors with Victory Over Santa Cruz

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Hoganphotos /Golden Boy Promotions): Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA, home to many wars like the bloody Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez III, Tim Bradley-Ruslan Provodnikov and Brandon Rios-Mike Alvarado I, Victor Terrazas walks his deadliest stretch of highway when he squares up with former bantamweight titleholder Leo Santa Cruz, 24-0-1 (14). Azad Championship Report - Santa Cruz Faces His Toughest Test

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): Co-headlining this Saturday night’s card from the StubHub Center (Showtime 10:30 p.m., ET/7:30 p.m., PT) is Leo Santa Cruz, a fighter on quite a run recently. At this time last year, he was still just a relatively unknown beltholder still trying to gain a foothold in the business. He ended 2012 (where he performed five times) as a fighter with immeasurable momentum and kicked off this year by earning a spot on the Floyd Mayweather-Robert Guerrero pay-per-view Azad Championship Report - Santa Cruz Faces His Toughest Test

Setting up a Showdown?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Carlos Delgado, Hoganphotos/ GoldenBoy): It was announced on Thursday afternoon at the El Paseo restaurant at Olvera Street in Los Angeles that Golden Boy Promotions will stage a card on August 24th featuring WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares (who will defend his crown against veteran Jhonny Gonzalez) and a bout for the vacant WBC super bantamweight title between Leo Santa Cruz and Victor Terrazas. As you look at the big picture, there is the sense that this is Setting up a Showdown?

A Beautiful Site/Sight

By Steve Kim (Photo © Saul G. Sanchez - w/ Photo Gallery inside article © German Villasenor): In front a record-setting crowd of 8,629 at the StubHub Center (formerly known as the Home Depot Center), a memorable night of action was capped off by Marcos Maidana steamrolling the game-but-outgunned Josesito Lopez in six rounds. It was a back-and-forth affair that saw both men have their moments but it was the Argentine’s power that carried the day. Before that, Erislandy Lara turned back the A Beautiful Site/Sight

Rigondeaux claims his place among the best

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): I once had the pleasure of witnessing unified super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux dance across the canvas to some of the most violent artists the world has ever known at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, CA. The southpaw Cuban legend known as “El Chacal” (The Jackal) was preparing for his fifth fight as a professional after an amateur career that boasted 2 gold medals among top honors at every world championship you... Random Thoughts from the Sports Arena

By Steve Kim (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): For a boxing writer in the Southern California/Los Angeles area, it was a bit of nirvana this past Saturday as a day-night doubleheader was staged by Golden Boy Promotions at the L.A. Sports Arena. This reporter drove onto the premises at just before noon and didn’t depart till just a few minutes before 11 p.m. (when a few more hours of boxing on HBO awaited him on the DVR). Sweet Savagery

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): It’s rare that the sport of boxing - which too many times lets down its fan base - not only delivers on its promises but exceeds them. Nishioka’s fighting heart drives him towards Donaire

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): At the end of 2010, super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka, 39-4-3, 24 KOs, was named Japan’s “Fighter of the Year.” At the ceremony, a video challenge by Fernando Montiel was made to Nishioka who readily accepted. Donaire Goes Back to His Roots

Steve Kim: After enjoying a string of dominant wins in somewhat uneven performances in his last three outings, Nonito Donaire, who essentially tried training himself in Las Vegas (where he now resides), is now firmly entrenched back in San Carlos, California (near the Bay Area) and is back with his team of Brian Schwartz, Mike Bazzel, Remi Korchemny and Victor Conte. Yeah, the results against Omar Narvaez, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. and Jeffrey Mathebula are hard to argue against but the manner in Donaire Goes Back to His Roots

Can Donaire Earn Style Points?

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): In a couple of weeks, a highly anticipated bout takes place between IBF/WBO junior featherweight champion Nonito Donaire and Toshiaki Nishioka (who held the WBC belt with distinction for several years) at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California (headlining on HBO). However, to many, that night’s main event will be the junior welterweight contest featuring Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado. The reason is simple; that match-up is almost guaranteed... Buzzkill After Dark

By Steve Kim (Photo © Tri Nguyen): Back during his days on the gridiron for his alma mater, Michigan State, in the early 2000s, if Seth Mitchell was injured and unable to play, the upcoming Spartan game wouldn’t be scrapped. Instead, whoever was next on the middle linebacker depth chart would merely take his spot that Saturday afternoon. That’s the nature of football, “next man up.” In boxing, if the main event falls apart, well, the show doesn’t go on... Buzzkill After Dark
