Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

From 2000 Olympics, Calvin Brock Now Raising Rooftops

By Ken Hissner and Calvin Brock: 2000 Olympian Calvin “The Boxing Banker” Brock had a very successful amateur career (147-38) and represented the USA at the Sydney Games! He won his first twenty-nine fights as a professional to earn a title fight with IBF world champion Wladimir Klitschko at Madison Square Garden in November of 2006 getting stopped in seven rounds. Brock posted a pair of wins in 2007 and in November of 2007 met Eddie Chambers in an elimination bout losing by split decision. In From 2000 Olympics, Calvin Brock Now Raising Rooftops

The Case for and Against Curtis Stevens

By Steve Kim: In a rather dreary edition of “Fight Night” on the NBC Sports Network from the Mohegan Sun this past Saturday night, Eddie Chambers was flummoxed by the counterpunching style of Thabiso Mchunu and then Tomasz Adamek had a perfunctory victory over the shopworn Dominick Guinn. But there was one notable bright spot, the continued resurgence of middleweight Curtis Stevens, who notched another eye-opening knockout victory over the usually durable Saul Roman... Curtis Stevens Detonates Left Hooks on Saul Roman’s Face for the KO Win

By Gabriel Montoya: Before his fight Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut against veteran tough guy Saul Roman, 37-10, (31), Curtis “Showtime” Stevens opined “I know he is going to get knocked down. The question, will he get back up? And if he gets back up, he will not survive. It’s just a matter of time.” [Roman] gets put down. Gets back up. Gets put down again, he gets back. He gets back up and fights. That’s all I can see,” Stevens said... Curtis Stevens Detonates Left Hooks on Saul Roman’s Face for the KO Win

Chambers is Now Cruisin’

By Steve Kim: For much of his career, Eddie Chambers has been a “small” heavyweight. In the land of giants, Chambers was always small by the standards of today’s behemoths, many of whom are the size of power forwards and have no problems carrying 240-plus pounds. Chambers, who is 6’1” and in the low-200s, has made the decision to now compete in the cruiserweight division. He faces South African Thabiso Mchunu this Saturday night (NBC Sports Network 10:30 p.m., ET) from the Mohegan Sun C Chambers is Now Cruisin’

Fight Night Provides Springboard

By Steve Kim: This Saturday night from the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, the latest installment of the “Fight Night” series on the NBC Sports Network (10:30 p.m., ET) takes place. It’s a tripleheader featuring middleweight Curtis Stevens, cruiserweight Eddie Chambers and heavyweight Tomasz Adamek. This series, which began in January of 2012, has provided two things on a consistent basis: solid entertainment and a springboard for boxers to go and perform on bigger (and more lucrative) Fight Night Provides Springboard

Summer Snooze

By Steve Kim: If you’re a boxing fan, right now, you’re pretty much like a football fan - you can’t wait for September. Because from that point on, boxing has a strong slate of fights lined up (headlined by marquee pay-per-view events spaced out a month apart featuring the likes of Floyd Mayweather vs. Saul Alvarez, Tim Bradley vs. Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios). But as usual, the summer months are a drag for those who follow the “Sweet Science.”... Summer Snooze

USS Takes Second Voyage Against Adamek

By Steve Kim (Photo © Marcin Kondek): The first time Steve Cunningham (then the reigning IBF cruiserweight titlist) faced Tomasz Adamek back in December of 2008, he figured that with the fight being not too far from his home of Philadelphia in Newark, New Jersey, he would be at the very least fighting in front of a neutral audience. Instead, it turns out “The Rock” basically became “Lil’ Warsaw” every time an Adamek fight was staged in this venue. It was red and white all over. Martirosyan Tweaks Fans on Twitter

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Chances are if you’ve followed Vanes Martirosyan - who faces Erislandy Lara this Saturday night at the Wynn Resort - on Twitter (@VanesBoxing) the past year or so, you’ve probably been either amused, annoyed, angered…or a combination of all three - by his 140-character missives. By Steve Kim: While most of the focus of the boxing world will be on the supposedly important bout in Oakland between Chad Dawson and Andre Ward in Oakland on HBO (and, to a lesser degree, the card in Las Vegas featuring the junior welterweight tussle between Lucas Matthysse and Ajose Olusegun on Showtime on Saturday night), that afternoon has a card taking place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, featuring Tomasz Adamek... Showtime Adds Appetizer and Dessert

By Steve Kim: One of the (many) pet peeves of boxing fans is that in recent years, broadcasts on HBO or Showtime have featured just one live bout. There are many reasons for this - mostly having to do with their budgets. But think about it; even a full 12-round fight that goes the distance lasts less than a full hour. It’s almost like going to a fancy... Showtime Adds Appetizer and Dessert

A Quick Look at Some Modern-Day Warriors

By Anson Wainwright: I consider every person who steps into the squared circle a warrior; each and every one of them has my utmost respect. However, certain fighters qualify more than others.
