Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Mares and Santa Cruz battle for LA bragging rights

By John J. Raspanti: They met seven years ago in where else, a boxing gym in Southern California. Both were local products. The two Mexican Americans spared roughly 30 rounds for the next few days. Abner Mares was 22 at the time, Leo Santa Cruz two years younger. Neither will say who had the advantage. When the sparing was over, Mares figured he’d likely fight Santa Cruz again someday in a real fight. “I’ve always thought that when you’re in the gym training with someone around... By German Villasenor: Jason Velez who holds the USNBC, interim WBO AND WBC Silver Featherweight straps will be facing Mexico’s Daniel ’’Huracan’’ Ramirez (11-2, 5KOs) this Thursday evening in the Golden Boy Promotion’s LA FIGHT CLUB at the Belasco Theater in Downtown L.A.. Cuellar knocks out Lopez in two rounds

By John J. Raspanti: WBA interim featherweight titleholder Jesus Cuellar wasted little time in brutalizing former two-division champion Juan Manuel Lopez in two rounds Thursday night at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Lopez said after the fight that his career was likely over. We can only hope so. Cuellar (25-1, 19 KOs) had little trouble tagging Lopez (34-5, 31 KOs) with multiple shots in the opening stanza. Lopez tried to box, but that’s not his game... Cuellar knocks out Lopez in two rounds

King Cotto

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): While the official results say that Miguel Cotto stopped Sergio Martinez in 10 rounds this past weekend at a packed Madison Square Garden, the middleweight championship really changed hands in the very first minutes of the bout. Martinez, who came into this fight as the recognized middleweight champion, was sent to the canvas thrice in the first stanza by the heavy and accurate hands of Cotto. The rest of the night was just mere window dressing King Cotto

Uncle Joe is Back

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos, MaxBoxing): In support of this weekend’s pay-per-view main event from the MGM Grand Garden Arena is a bout for the WBA interim super featherweight title between Bryan Vasquez and Jose Felix, in what looks to be a competitive fight (at least on paper). Not much is known about Vasquez, who hails from Costa Rica, but Joe Hernandez, one of the best... Uncle Joe is Back

Robbery on the Island?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): It’s not clear if Mauricio Herrera had any arroz con pollo or arroz con gandules y lechon asado during his stay in Puerto Rico this past week. However, he certainly got a dose of home-cooking that left his stomach queasy as Herrera was on the short end of a highly debatable majority decision that saw Danny Garcia retain his WBA and WBC 140-pound titles. Is Scott Running Out of Time?

By Steve Kim: Despite an impressive looking record of 36-1-1 (13), you’ve always gotten the sense that heavyweight Malik Scott has underachieved, that he should have accomplished more by this stage of his career and in essence, he’s left money on the table. As you say this to him, he doesn’t get angry or upset. In fact, the personable Scott sees where you’re coming from. “I wouldn’t say I totally disagree with it but I would say I see why you could say that. But Is Scott Running Out of Time?

Garcia Makes Home (Away from Home) Debut

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): When Danny “Swift” Garcia makes the fourth defense of his World Boxing Association (WBA) “super” and World Boxing Council (WBC) world junior welterweight titles this weekend, it won’t be a home game for the unbeaten champion but it certainly will be a homecoming. Philadelphia-born and raised Garcia is proudly Puerto Rican as both parents were born on the island. Garcia has always thanked and praised his “P.R.” fan base and the champion... Ponce de Leon Looks to Even the Score

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): “I lost. That’s all,” is what Daniel Ponce de Leon says when you ask him about his initial match-up versus Juan Manuel Lopez in June of 2008 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. On that night, Ponce de Leon lost his WBO junior featherweight title as he was sent to the canvas twice and halted in the first round by the Puerto Rican. Perhaps he doesn’t want to recall too much of what happened that night or perhaps simply can’t. But as Ponce de Leon Looks to Even the Score

Magdaleno Makes Changes

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): This Saturday night from the C. Robert Lee Center in Hawaiian Gardens, California, Diego Magdaleno faces Jorge Pazos to kick off his 2014 campaign. Last year at this time, Magdaleno was preparing for his first world title opportunity against WBO junior lightweight beltholder Rocky Martinez, whom he faced on April 6th in Macao, China. In a tightly contested fight, Magdaleno came up short by the scores of 115-112 and 114-113.... Magdaleno Makes Changes

Right Now, It’s No-Time

By Steve Kim (Pic created by © Chee, MaxBoxing): This upcoming weekend was supposed to be the date for the rematch between WBC featherweight titlist Jhonny Gonzalez and Abner Mares from the Staples Center. But when Mares pulled out of the fight citing a rib injury (an alibi Gonzalez and his camp still aren’t buying), it meant - other than a couple of “ShoBox” telecasts - Showtime would not be televising any major boxing cards this month. Ramirez Hits the Road to Laredo

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): This winter chill has affected many people in a multitude of ways this past week. Whether stranded on frozen highways or staying overnight in high school gyms or the nearest convenience store, the lives of millions in one way or the other have been disrupted by Mother Nature. Jose Ramirez, who fights tonight in Laredo, Texas, should count his blessings that he wasn’t in Atlanta over the past few days. Well, that is except in the good ol’ U.S. of A. The Evolution of the Latin Snake

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): Middleweight Sergio Mora is performing this weekend against Milton Nunez at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California. Despite coming off a nationally televised victory against Grzegorz Proksa on ESPN2 over the summer, he finds himself in “the dark” (as they say in the business). Azad Championship Report - Jhonny Be Good

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): A funny thing happened on the way to a crosstown showdown between Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares, which would’ve have been a robust promotion next year in Los Angeles. Mares And Gonzalez Ready For War

By Marc Livitz (Photo © SHOWTIME): While many of us as boxing fans love to count down the days leading up to the next big fight, there are still high numbers of the boxing faithful who truly appreciate the fighter who treads on and on. Azad Championship Report - How Does Mares Stack Up?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Gene Blevins - Hoganphotos /Golden Boy Promotions): When you start talking about the elite of boxing, usually Floyd Mayweather, Andre Ward, Juan Manuel Marquez and Sergio Martinez are the names thrown around first and foremost. Mares Builds More Momentum

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos, MaxBoxing): For WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares - who defends his title against Jhonny Gonzalez this Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California (Showtime, 10:30 p.m., ET/7:30 p.m., PT) - 2013 has been an eventful year. It actually began with a very public back-and-forthing on Twitter between Mares and Nonito Donaire over a fight that was shelved because of the ongoing “Cold War” between Golden Boy and Top Rank... The Pay-Per-View Soapbox – Aug. 8, 2013

By Steve Kim: In five weeks the most highly-anticipated pay-per-view card of 2013 takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas when Floyd Mayweather faces Saul Alvarez. What has added to the anticipation of this event is the addition of Lucas Matthysse’s battle versus Danny Garcia, a fight that could easily headline on Showtime on its own merits. Nothing Easy for “El Loco”

By Steve Kim: After last week’s edition of “Friday Night Fights,” a certified snoozer, ESPN2 looks to have a much more entertaining card this week from the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa when lightweights Jose Hernandez and Rustam Nugaev tussle. For Hernandez, it’s another tough fight coming off his big victory over the undefeated Tony Luis back in January. But what else is new? Since this guy turned professional as a teenager of 17, he hasn’t had a lot of soft touches... Nothing Easy for “El Loco”

Soto Karass Meets Berto (Again)

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): On the night of June 8th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California a rather uneventful (to say the least) fight was taking place inside the ring between junior middleweights Jermell Charlo and Demetrius Hopkins. The boo-birds came out early for this one and it wasn’t difficult for the crowd’s attention to be diverted to the crossing of paths between Jesus Soto Karass and Andre Berto in the lower bowl of the tennis stadium. By Steve Kim: The verbal sparring between WBA welterweight titlist Paulie Malignaggi and Adrien Broner, who face each other this Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, has seemingly been never-ending and actually began before their names were on the dotted line. By Steve Kim (Graphic by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): Now that the dust has settled from this past weekend, when Floyd Mayweather easily dispatched Robert Guerrero over 12 rounds, the question is just when and who does “Money” face next? Azad Championship Report - Still on the “Money” at 36

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): Robert Guerrero is a pretty good professional prizefighter. But it will take someone of much higher caliber to topple Floyd Mayweather, even at age 36, who on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in front of nearly 16,000 patrons, easily outboxed “The Ghost” over 12 rounds. The three scorecards that read 117-111 across the board didn’t fully speak to the dominance exhibited by Mayweather.
