Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Cotto vs. Canelo: The next chapter of an historic rivalry

By Nicholas Phillipowsy: In just a few days, we will perhaps be witnessing the biggest fight that can be made in a post Mayweather/Pacquiao era of boxing. Aside from the record breaking Mayweather/Pacquiao super fight, this bout will prove to be second to none. Even though it will be remembered in history as the second biggest fight of 2015, many would argue it as the most significant fight that can be made to determine the future landscape of boxing. On Saturday, November 21, 2015... Cotto vs. Canelo: The next chapter of an historic rivalry

Could legs be the difference for Alvarez and Cotto on November 21?

By John J. Raspanti: There’s an old way of thinking that women weaken legs. No less an authority than Mickey Goldmill, the grouchy trainer of Rocky Balboa, espoused this thinking 38 years ago in the classic film Rocky. Surprisingly, Goldmill is not alone. Freddie Roach, whose fighter, Miguel Cotto, meets former champion Canelo Alvarez on November 21 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, NV., basically agrees women can be a distraction... Cotto demolishes Geale

By John J. Raspanti: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) made the first defense of his middleweight crown a successful one by blasting out former champion Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) in round four at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Cotto, 34, landed a big left hook to the body a mere after the opening bell. The punch was foreshadowing for what would transpire later in the match. A short compact jab caused Geale to stumble... Can Golovkin make Murray his latest knockout victim?

By John J. Raspanti: Quickly becoming the most popular fighter in the game, WBA and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin will be in search of consecutive knockout number nineteen on February 21 when he faces Martin Murray at the Salle des Étoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Nineteen knockouts in a row. Are you kidding me? That’s no typo. On the surface, Golovkin’s record is quite impressive. He has entered the squared circle thirty one times and never come close to losing... Can Golovkin make Murray his latest knockout victim?

5 Champs Who Will Remain and 5 Who Will Go in 2015

By Derek Bonnett: As we encounter another new year, the landscape of the boxing scene continues to evolve. With old champions acting out the final stages of their careers and new ones emerging to fill the void, boxing maintains a state of homeostasis and keeps fight fans intrigued even amid the dubious officiating and cries of scandal. Boxing, as always, will endure; however, not every participant with an alphabet title will be so lucky. Inevitably, the mighty will eventually fall and, 5 Champs Who Will Remain and 5 Who Will Go in 2015

MaxBoxing's Fighter of the Year for 2014 is…

By John J. Raspanti: There were a lot of great candidates for MaxBoxing’s Fighter of the Year. Such as... Terence Crawford (25-0, 17 KOs) had a phenomenal 2014. In March, Crawford, of Omaha, Neb., traveled to Glasgow, Scotland to defeat hometown hero Ricky Burns. He returned to Omaha three months later and stopped talented Yuriorkis Gamboa in the ninth round of a thrilling bout. Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) rolled through 2014 by… MaxBoxing's Fighter of the Year for 2014 is…

The GGG ko trains rolls into Southern California

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © German Villasenor): The appeal of WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is obvious. He’s soft-spoken and kind. He never dismisses an opponent. When he wins a fight, he’s almost apologetic. But it seems what fight fans love most about Golovkin is that the man can flat-out punch. On Saturday night, at a sold-out StubHub Arena in Carson, CA, Golovkin made Marco Antonio Rubio his eighteenth consecutive knockout victim. The end came in the second round... Golovkin vs. Burley

By David Tyler: The Gennady Golovkin vs. Daniel Geale fight drew slightly over 1 million HBO viewers. That’s according to the Nielsen ratings provided by HBO. Not quite the record of 4.6 million. The Nielsen Media Research team explained that fights during the summer months do not draw as well as those fought in the Spring or Winter months. At least 1 million witnessed a great slugfest with Golovkin providing another electrifying performance in scoring his 17th consecutive knockout... Golovkin vs. Burley

Golovkin’s Dilemma

By Matthew Hurley: With all the lunacy that goes on in boxing it’s always refreshing when a brilliant talent comes along. It’s even better when that fighter is a complete professional and a good guy to boot. Middleweight titlist Gennady Golovkin, or GGG as his fans call him, is turning into something special. A fighter who loves to perform, who pines for the big fight against anyone willing to step in the ring with him and who smiles like a young kid who can’t believe how great everything is Golovkin’s Dilemma

Golovkin drops the hammer

By John J. Raspanti: Prior to Gennady Golovkin’s three-round destruction of Daniel Geale, HBO commentator Max Kellerman remarked that he’s constantly asked if there’s any other fighter in boxing history who reminds him of the Kazakhstani bomber. His answer was surprising. In the past, Golovkin’s style has been compared to Hall of Fame inductee Julio Cesar Chavez, Sr. But Kellerman went back in history to the boxer who dominated his division and held the most prized... Golovkin dispatches Geale: Full Report

By Jason Gonzalez: Manhattan, NY - Coming into Saturday night’s showdown, Australia’s Daniel Geale appeared to be Gennady Golovkin’s stiffest foe, or so it seemed to be on paper. Geale vowed to throw down with the middleweight champion, refered to as "Kazak Thunder" by Jim Lampley. No one could ever accuse the Aussie of not keeping his word. He didn’t run, and attempted to match Golovkin’s fire power. For his effort... Golovkin dispatches Geale: Full Report

Golovkin destroys Geale in three rounds

By John J. Raspanti: Golovkin needed only three rounds to stop former titleholder Daniel Geale at a raucous Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York Saturday night. The bout was televised live on HBO Championship Boxing. Geale (30-3, 16 KOs) started well in the opening stanza. He used angles and boxed. His jab landed. Golovkin looked for openings. Friendly rivals Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Geale meet July 26

By John J. Raspanti: Gennady Golovkin is pretty familiar with Daniel Geale, the man he’s fighting on July 26. They first met in an amateur contest 13 years ago, with Golovkin prevailing by a wide decision. A lot has happened to both boxers since. Geale turned professional in 2004 with Golovkin doing the same two years later. Geale, 33, captured the IBO middleweight title in his eighteenth bout. Golovkin, 32, picked up a championship strap in 2010. Geale lost his belt three years later to A Friendly rivals Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Geale meet July 26

The Rise of Ruslan

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): There was a time when Ruslan Provodnikov - who faces Chris Algieri in defense of his WBO junior welterweight title from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn (HBO 10 p.m., ET/PT) - could walk into a room with his hair on fire and go unnoticed. Nowadays at least when he goes to fights or other boxing-related functions, he finds himself the center of attention from adoring fans. Miguel the Middleweight

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Miguel Cotto, who’s had a distinguished career that one day might lead him to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York, takes on a new challenge when he faces middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (at a catchweight of 159 pounds). Golovkin Moves on Without Chavez Jr.

By Steve Kim: On Saturday afternoon in a small conference room at the LAX Marriott, WBA middleweight beltholder Gennady Golovkin held a media roundtable with a select handful of boxing scribes. If it were up to him, he’d be talking about his upcoming summer showdown against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. But alas, Chavez seemed more intent on battling his promoter, Top Rank Promotions than facing “GGG.”... Showtime Showcases

By Steve Kim: HBO hasn’t had a very good year when it comes to its boxing programming. This was highlighted on March 29th when the network broadcast a main event that featured Sergey Kovalev defending his WBO light heavyweight belt against the unknown Cedric Agnew, who was listed by bookmakers (who are the real experts most of the time) as high as a 38-1 underdog. To add insult to injury, it was announced earlier that week that Adonis Stevenson would be jumping ship to rival Showtime and Showtime Showcases

How Much Does Pacquiao Have Left?

By Steve Kim (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): Manny Pacquiao is a fighter of many punches. However, most of the time, he’s a man of few words, which is a bit of a problem when you attempt to interview him. No, it’s not that he’s unpleasant or angry with the media - he’s just the opposite in fact - but by nature, he’s a soft-spoken individual (at least with the American press) and while much is on the line this upcoming Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena How Much Does Pacquiao Have Left?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Sumio Yamada): As a law-abiding citizen and someone who certainly doesn’t want to catch the ire of my good friend and press row colleague, Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports, I was in a bit of a bind on Saturday afternoon.
