Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

The PPV TV Cheat Sheet

By Marty Mulcahey: I am surprised at the unexpectedly positive buzz surrounding tonight’s Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley pay-per-view. The momentum for it has slowly built to a crescendo, which should produce a considerable amount of last-minute impulse purchases, although many potential buyers will be put off by the $65 cost (for high-definition) as I was when I pre-ordered the event. Considering this is not a marquee bout, no matter... The PPV TV Cheat Sheet

One Last, Last Time for Segura at 108

By Steve Kim: Prior to his first hook-up with Ivan Calderon last year in Puerto Rico, Giovani Segura privately pledged that this would be his last foray in the junior flyweight division. He would make this one final fight at 108-pounds in an attempt to unify his WBA title with Calderon’s WBO belt. This chance at history (and its accompanying payday) was worth... Cucaracha in Mexico

By Steve Kim: For the past week or two, noted trainer Freddie Roach has not been at his familiar haunts of the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California. Instead, he has gone south of the border to Mexico to train Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who takes on Billy Lyell in Culiacan on January 29th... Cucaracha in Mexico

The Friday TV Cheat Sheet

By Marty Mulcahey: I was disappointed to miss last week’s debut of ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights,” since the main event was an intriguing matchup of a big banger against a volume puncher. Predictably, the fight was a close affair with plenty of shifts in momentum and added drama raised by the specter of hideous swelling to both men’s faces. This week’s pairings are not as competitive at first glance but deliver in terms of star power and boxers who... The Friday TV Cheat Sheet

The Boys from Argentina

By Marty Mulcahey: This weekend, two of the most significant Argentine boxers of the last decade fight on American television, beginning with Carlos Baldomir’s appearance on a Telefutura card emanating from Argentina tonight. On Saturday, pound-for-pound-rated Sergio Martinez defends his World Middleweight Championship against fellow elite Paul Williams, on HBO, in a rematch of a “Fight of the Year” candidate from last year... Montoya’s Friday Mailbag

Montoya’s Friday Mailbag

Thank Buddha it’s Friday, fight fans. Time has seemed slow down for me these days. Not sure why. Maybe it’s my body slowly recoiling from my 37th birthday coming up next week. Maybe it’s because I never wear a watch and have started to not notice time in my older age. In any case, we have a full roster of fights this weekend and a whole lot of questions today about almost none of them. Fight fans, I have to ask again, let’s cut the questions to the quick. I love the conversation we’ve got going, Montoya’s Friday Mailbag

Weekend TV Cheat Sheet - Part One

By Marty Mulcahey: It will be a great weekend for boxing fans, with no less than six alphabet titles up for grabs on Saturday. That does not even take into account a canceled IBF cruiserweight title bout, between Steve Cunningham and Matt Godfrey, nor the Yuriorkis Gamboa and Marcos Maidana fights which are contested for bogus “non-super” and “interim” titles, respectively. Perhaps the best fight of the weekend, between Arthur Abraham and Andre Dirrell, does not even involve a world title belt. Weekend TV Cheat Sheet - Part One

Weekend TV Cheat Sheet

By Marty Mulcahey: A second consecutive jam-packed lineup of televised boxing events, six last week and four this week, to warm up sports fans before the kick-off of the Super Bowl. The weekend is headlined by a Showtime Championship Boxing main event that, on paper, looks like an early entrant for Fight of the Year. The Edwin Valero – Antonio DeMarco match-up promises excitement and almost no one believes the combatants will hear the final bell. ESPN and FOX Sports also enter the fray, and ESPN Weekend TV Cheat Sheet

Mack vs. Johnson: Timing is Everything

By Coyote Duran: Yusaf Mack almost didn’t get his opportunity to face former THE RING magazine World Light Heavyweight Champion Glen Johnson. After all, the IBF light heavyweight title eliminator match was originally scheduled for the undercard of the Shane Mosley-Andre Berto welterweight title unification bout. Mosley-Berto, scheduled for January 30, was scrapped when Berto, the WBC titlist and a fighter of Haitian descent, pulled out of the fight due to concern for loved ones and friends Mack vs. Johnson: Timing is Everything
