Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

It's do or die time for Dawson and Fonfara

For most of us, doing a good job is a pride thing. We strive to be the best we can. If we make a mistake, we apologize, get chewed on by the boss a little, and make a point of not screwing up again. It’s not that simple if you’re a professional boxer. One loss can set your career back—or possibly end it. By John J. Raspanti It's do or die time for Dawson and Fonfara

A still-hungry Andre Ward meets Sullivan Barrera March 26th in Oakland

By John J. Raspanti: Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) makes his debut in the light heavyweight division March 26th when he faces hard-hitting light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) at Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA. Ward, 32, was last seen in the ring nine months ago dispatching over-matched Englishman Paul Smith in nine one-sided rounds. Some criticized his performance—saying he appeared a step slower. Ready to make a point: Andre Ward returns to the ring

By John J. Raspanti: “But GGG is like all punchers. That’s why with a guy like GGG, -- you have to show them, and by the time they figure it out, guess what? Fight’s over." - Andre Ward. In 2004, Andre Ward surprised many by capturing the gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Ward debuted as a professional a year later when he beat Chris Molina. In 2008, he defeated Jerson Ravelo to win NABO super middleweight title. There were whispers about the strength of Ward’s chin and. Ready to make a point: Andre Ward returns to the ring

Garcia vs. Broner next? Lee-Quillin split draw, rematch?

By Jason Gonzalez: Brooklyn, NY - The highly anticipated matchup between unified junior welterweight champion (WBA/WBC) Danny “Swift” Garcia, 30-0, (17) and IBF title holder Lamont Peterson, 33-3-1, (17) should have been a fight that saw one undisputed champion. It should have been a scrap in which the victor would have claimed supremacy at 140 pounds. But instead fight fans alike had to settle for a non-title bout that was fought at a catch weight of 143 pounds... Garcia vs. Broner next? Lee-Quillin split draw, rematch?

Vasquez dominates Lartey

PITTSBURGH, PA. (Feb. 21, 2015) – Sammy Vasquez put on a show for his hometown fans in Pittsburgh, winning a near-shutout 10-round unanimous decision (99-91 twice, 100-90) over Emmanuel Lartey in the main event of ShoBox: The New Generation on Friday from CONSUL Energy Center. Vasquez (18-0, 13 KOs) entered the bout seeking his 10th consecutive knockout against an opponent who hadn’t been knocked down before and had been in the ring with two U.S. Olympians. On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings

By Derek Bonnett: Aside from the ring action which transpired inside of the squared circles around the world, there was a small buzz on-line concerning professional leather throwing on the international scene in a historical frame of reference. That’s right, the list of candidates for induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame was released and, thus, generated some mild conversation as far as who was or was not deserving from the modern era. To my surprise, fans were rather harsh in On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings

Barthelemy defeats Saucedo; Martirosyan beats Nelson, Karpency stuns Dawson

By Stephen Tobey at ringside: MASHANTUCKET, Conn. – Fernando David Saucedo took the best from Rances Barthelemy. Barthelemy avoided just about everything Saucedo threw in return and retained his International Boxing Federation junior lightweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday at Foxwoods Resort Casino. Julie Lederman, Bill Morandi and Frank Lombardi all scored it 120-108 for Barthelemy, a native of Cuba now living in Las Vegas. He improved to 21-0 (12 knockouts)... Why Hopkins is fighting Kovalev

Why Hopkins is fighting Kovalev

By Vikram Birring (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): Many years ago, Bernard Hopkins was an afterthought in boxing at the championship level. He lost two close decisions to Jermain Taylor, in which he saved his energy until the final rounds and mounted furious rallies, but gave up too many early ones to win on the scorecards. He claimed that the weight hindered his energy amount, not his age; at the time he was forty, ancient in boxing terms. So he moved up to 175 pounds, to face... Why Hopkins is fighting Kovalev

The Biggest Battle Ever in Montreal?

By Steve Kim: Yvon Michel, whose company, GYM is staging this tomorrow night’s contest between Jean Pascal and Lucian Bute, has had a full itinerary the past several weeks and days leading into this promotion, culminating this weekend at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. But Michel doesn’t mind one bit. When you remind him that he’s had a busy week, he corrects you by stating it’s actually, “a good week.” He has reason to feel this way. The 2013 “K9 Awards”: Part 1

By Steve Kim: 2013 is now in the books and it was a banner year for the sport of boxing. While we had the lingering “Cold War” between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank Promotions and the separating leagues of boxing fostered on Showtime and HBO, it was still a year filled with big events, great fights and memorable moments. So without any further ado, let’s get to the always anticipated “K9 Awards”... FIGHTER OF THE YEAR... The 2013 “K9 Awards”: Part 1

Something of the Year

By Gabriel Montoya: This is that list time of the year. What did I think was best out of all the things that happened in boxing? Which fighter’s journey affected me most? Life is comprised of moments. “Remember that time...?” Boxing is that to an extreme. Round one of Marvelous Marvin Hagler vs. Tommy Hearns. An entire series of battles in three minutes. The Fight to Make at 175

By Steve Kim: In front of a lively and sizable throng at the Colisee de Quebec in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, the duo of Sergey Kovalev and Adonis Stevenson put on a display of power-punching that was both impressive and awe-inspiring this past Thanksgiving weekend. Kovalev, the co-headliner on this HBO broadcast, took care of Ismayl Sillakh - considered a “live” dog by some (OK; OK, admittedly that was me) - in two rounds and Stevenson dispatched the ballsy Tony Bellew in six heats. A Testy Issue and Other Boxing Thoughts

By Gabriel Montoya: A Testy Issue...The random anti-doping testing issue makes some boxing people touchy but it seems like some fighters, following the example set by Floyd Mayweather Jr. over three years ago, definitely want it. Danny Garcia wanted it for Lucas Matthysse. Timothy Bradley has gotten it twice now in a row. He’ll keep doing it; I’ll bet. Freddie Roach wanted it for Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios. Stevenson Looks to Cement Fighter of the Year Status vs. Bellew

By Gabriel Montoya: Coming into 2013, current WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson, 22-1 (19), was thought of a prospect and possible suspect. Heading into his fourth fight of the year and second defense of his light heavyweight crown Saturday against Tony Bellew, 20-1-1 (12), at the Colisee de Quebec live on HBO, Stevenson is arguably on track to be 2013’s “Fighter of the Year.” To start the year, the Port-au-Prince, Haiti native with a criminal past, now making his Stevenson Looks to Cement Fighter of the Year Status vs. Bellew

By Steve Kim (Photo © Gene Blevins - Hoganphotos /Golden Boy Promotions): When you start talking about the elite of boxing, usually Floyd Mayweather, Andre Ward, Juan Manuel Marquez and Sergio Martinez are the names thrown around first and foremost. By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos, MaxBoxing): For WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares - who defends his title against Jhonny Gonzalez this Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California (Showtime, 10:30 p.m., ET/7:30 p.m., PT) - 2013 has been an eventful year. The Pay-Per-View Soapbox – Aug. 8, 2013

By Steve Kim: In five weeks the most highly-anticipated pay-per-view card of 2013 takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas when Floyd Mayweather faces Saul Alvarez. What has added to the anticipation of this event is the addition of Lucas Matthysse’s battle versus Danny Garcia, a fight that could easily headline on Showtime on its own merits. Andre Berto, Mickey Bey, Canada and Conflicts of Interest

By Gabriel Montoya: July has been an interesting month for anti-doping in boxing. On Friday night, lightweight prospect Mickey Bey returned to the ring against John Molina, Jr. I would write that Bey returned from a suspension for testing positive with one of the highest testosterone to epitestosterone (T/E) ratio in Nevada Athletic Commission history but that would not be true. Bey was suspended in March for his 30:1 T/E ratio following his February 2, 2013 third knockout of Robert Rodriguez. T Andre Berto, Mickey Bey, Canada and Conflicts of Interest

Exiled?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Last month, a press conference was held at the Beverly Hills Hotel to announce the October 12th pay-per-view match between Juan Manuel Marquez and Tim Bradley. Before the official proceedings started, this reporter inquired about when Guillermo Rigondeaux’s next date on HBO might be. A Top Rank executive had a reaction that was akin to Jim Mora’s (in)famous “Playoffs?!” rant. “Next date? They want nothing to do with him,” was the Exiled?

Simple Truths

By Gabriel Montoya: It’s the middle of a stellar year for boxing despite its myriad conflicts of interest between promoters and networks. We’ve had multiple “Fight of the Year” candidates, the continued emergence of “GGG” Gennady Golovkin and Lucas Matthysse, a surprise in Ruslan Provodnikov and the return of the Kronk (at least for a night) in Adonis Stevenson’s one-punch obliteration of Chad Dawson. Azad Championship Report - Stevenson Kronks out Dawson

By Gabriel Montoya: The origin of raw knockout power is the best mystery in boxing. We can use science to measure punching power as HBO has apparently been using a device under the fighter’s wraps to measure this very thing for some time now from what I am told. Pure knockout power can be harnessed with solid fighting technique to be sure. The straighter the shot, the better the torque, snap and speed with which it the punch lands. But raw knockout power - and why some have it and... Azad Championship Report - Stevenson Kronks out Dawson
